Dr Farsalinos presents clinical research studies/results and speaks out regarding what nicotine concentrations are used by e cig users and what kind of nicotine levels are most effective. Good to hear that he also agrees with most vapers that the proposed maximum 4mg nicotine solution is ineffective making e cigarettes useless to most vapers.

ASH have this month (May) released a study that was carried by survey of adults from 2010-2013 and with children aged 11-18 in March 2013.

Here is the summary taken from the study

Among children regular use of e-cigarettes is extremely rare. Children who
had heard of e-cigarettes were asked about their use and knowledge of
them. What little use that is reported is confined almost entirely to children
who currently smoke or used to smoke.

1 in 10 16-18 year olds who had heard of e-cigarettes (1 in 20 among 11-15 year olds) has “tried e-cigarettes once or twice”.
1 in 100 16-18 year olds (0% 11-15 year olds) uses e-cigarettes more than once a week.

Among young people who have never smoked 1% have “tried e-cigarettes once or twice”, 0% report continued e-cigarette use and 0% expect to try an e-cigarette soon.

Among adults electronic cigarette current use has grown among smokers
and ex-smokers and remains at 0% among those who have never smoked.
Ex-smokers report having used e-cigarettes to help a quit attempt (48%) to prevent relapse to tobacco use (32%)

An independent study published by Tobacco Control revealed that e-cigarettes can be a great harm-reduction tool for smokers.

“Levels of Selected Carcinogens and Toxicants in Vapour from Electronic Cigarettes” showed that the vapor from e-cigarettes appear to be less injurious compared to vapor from tobacco cigarettes. Maciej Goniewicz, the lead author of the report, said toxic chemicals and negative health effects would be lower if a smoker switches from tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes.

The study looked into the levels of selected carbonyl compounds and other components found in the vapor of 12 e-cigarette brands. The scientists then compared the results to the components found in tobacco cigarettes and medicinal nicotine inhaler.

The results showed that “levels of selected toxic compounds found in the smoke from a conventional cigarette were 9-450-fold higher than levels in the vapor of an e-cigarette.” The results added that exposure acrolein is 15 times lower in an e-cigarette vapor.

Acrolein is a respiratory irritant and oxidant, and believed to be a major factor in cardiovascular diseases caused by smoking.

Bringing some balance to the study, Goniewicz said there are still risks associated with e-cigarette vapor. The results showed that the amount of formaldehyde contained in medicinal inhalers, tobacco cigarettes, and e-cigarettes are similar.

In his blog, Dr. Michael Siegel said that the formaldehyde content in e-cigarettes may be a result of “heating propylene glycol or the oxidation or hydrolysis of glycerin.” He said further research should be made on this.

Dr. Siegel is a professor at the Boston University School of Public Health.

Obviously at the time many regarded this as being somewhat over the top and while the actual details of what happened were not disclosed I thought that as well.

The good news is that today the decision was reversed and the season ticket re-instated. The story was picked up by local MP John Leech who wrote the club and not only asked their head of security to reconsider but also lift the ban on e cigarettes within the stadium itself.

Professor Gerry Stimson said it is a paradox that regulators are considering restricting e-cigarettes in the name of safety. He added that restricting e-cigarettes products only mean that regulators are tipping the scales in favor of tobacco products.

Stimson comes from the Imperial College London School of Public Health. In a letter published in The Times, he and two other public health experts said that e-cigarettes have the potential to radically lower the death toll caused by smoking tobacco products.

The three also said access to e-cigarettes should be made available and be encouraged.

The letter emphasized that e-cigarettes deliver nicotine in an aerosol form but without the harmful effects of tobacco smoking. The four public health experts argued that nicotine has limited health effects and the use of e-cigs can help smokers reduce their health risks especially if they cannot or are not willing to give up smoking.

The restrictions being imposed by the UK, the United States and the rest of Europe are paradoxical, considering that these governments are pushing for safety. The proposal to classify e-cigarettes as medicines would mean more costs and would consequently tip the favor to tobacco cigarettes.

The letter was signed by Stimson, University of Uppsala Emeritus Professor Karl Fagerstrom, and ASH former director Dr. Delon Human.

A recent report published at NBC News has shown that more Americans are becoming aware of electronic cigarettes. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week that more smokers are turning to e-cigarettes.

Of course, it also follows that the CDC is also calling for government regulation and evaluation. Dr. Tim McAfee of the CDC said regulators should step in to determine the toxic effects of e-cigarettes.

According to the CDC, the number of smokers who tried e-cigarettes has doubled in just 12 months. This is a significant trend because in 2010, the increase was only at 10 percent while in 2011, it was 21 percent.

CDC findings also showed that close to six in 10 US adults are aware of electronic cigarettes. In its online surveys, the CDC said the number of people aware of e-cigarettes in 2010 jumped from 40 percent to close to 60 percent in 2011.

According to the Nicotine & Tobacco Research journal, the number of former smokers who are trying e-cigarettes also increased from 2.5 percent to 7.4 percent.

It appears that e-cigarettes are becoming a force to reckon with. Tobacco corporations like Reynolds American, Inc. and Lorillard, Inc. are entering the e-cigarette market in their efforts to diversify their current businesses.

RAI has launched a limited distribution of its first e-cigarette brand while Lorillard has acquired Blu Ecigs last April 2012.
