The Vaporesso Switcher kit includes the Vaporesso Switcher Mod and the Vaporesso NRG tank.
switcher views

The Switcher is so called because you can swap the outer casing on this – it works and is simple to do.

vaporesso Switcher demoThe mod is a dual battery mod and will output 220W max.

There are 3 standard version colours – Silver, Retro Yellow and Iron Grey. There are also 3 Limited edition versions which light up – Shiny Green, Brown Gold and Red Blue.

The kit includes the Vaporesso NRG tank, depending on region this will be the standard NRG (outside EU) or the NRG Mini (Within EU – 2ml capacity to meet TPD Regulations).

Right then let’s find some suitable lifting equipment to help me get this out of the box!

Vaporesso Switcher Mod

I received the limited edition Red/Blue light up version with the standard 5ml NRG tank.

switcher front viewOh man this is huge. When you put the batteries in this is heavy too.

I have a few dual battery mods – the Wismec Sinuous Ravage 230 and the Augvape V200 and both are smaller and lighter than this.

I have found lately I mainly use mods at around 60W so I have been personally using single battery mods as they are much lighter and easier to carry around.

switcher case from bottomThis is way too big for me! However some people do like larger mods as there are larger tanks on the market (Steam Crave Aromamiser Titan – Exhibit A). You should be able to get 28mm diameter tanks on this and possibly up to a 30mm. I haven’t anything bigger than a 26.5mm and that is fine.

switcher side viewWith the light up version, you can turn the lighting effects on and off and also choose the colour and light pattern.

I love the light effects – I may be on my own here, but hey you can switch them off.

Switcher light upThe casing design is a slight let down, it is solid and sturdy but there is a grip style sticker on either side and one side of mine seems to be lifting slightly.

switcher gripThe weird circuit board style pattern on the back spoils the look of this a bit too. Although the green and brown gold have a different design.

switcher rear patternYou can change the case on this, which is good news – if the casing gets damaged or worn or you just fancy a different colour you can swap it for another.

This reminds me of the first Nokia mobile phones where you could buy clip on cases and that was fun.

I think Vaporesso should sell a huge range of cases, nice plain classy ones for people who like that and some bright funky ones for girlys like me!

switcher cover removalThe buttons all work well, the centre button and entering the standard menu is a bit of a pain – takes more clicks than it should.

I have never used any Vaporesso mods so this is a new brand to me.

switcher with nrgThis feels rock hard, no wobbles or rattles, I am in fact very scared of dropping this on my foot it’s made of lead I swear.

There is a “Masculine” 510 connection on the top of the mod. It hasn’t started growing any hairs or trumping a lot so perhaps mine isn’t a male?

switcher 510 connectorOverall build wise this feels robust.

The battery door is secure and hasn’t popped open once on me.

switcher case removedWhen I do open the battery door however if I am not fully concentrating the removable cover slides off.

Vaporesso NRG Tank

The Tank is a metallic purple colour and matches the mod beautifully.

vaporesso nrg tankThere is a plastic drip tip and there is a locking slide fill system.

nrg tank top viewThe airflow control is smooth to operate and the tank feels quality.

A lovely looking tank indeed.

How Does the Vaporesso Switcher With NRG Perform?

Basic operation

As this has a screen and lots of menu functions I will just run down the basics so I don’t bore you to death with everything this can do!

  • To switch on/off – 5 fast clicks of the fire button.
  • To enter the menu system… this might take a while! Press the centre “menu button”…
  • This takes you into the power mode selection – so select the power mode you require or if you want to change settings scroll down to the “System Set” icon and press Menu.

switcher mode menuFrom there you can select the following options:

  • Time Set – for the real time clock (RTC)
  • Brightness – for display brightness
  • Puff counter – reset the puff counter/vaping time
  • Smart On/Off – no idea what this does, have turned it on and off!
  • Screen Timeout – select how long the screen stays operational – this is for the real time clock after the clock appears.
  • Light – lights menu
  • Version – view software version
  • Default – return all settings to default.switcher system menu

If the screen is in clock mode or standby mode a press of the Fire button or Menu button will light the screen back up.

Press the fire button 3 times to lock the keys.

How To Install The Batteries

  • Turn the mod upside down.
  • Slide the battery door towards the back of the mod.
  • Make sure you have a soft landing for when the casing falls off too!
  • The batteries are inserted as shown on the cover.

vaporesso switcher battery installation

  • Pop the cover closed and slide it towards the front of the mod to secure.
  • I found it difficult sometimes to get this to close, especially if the casing had moved down the mod slightly.

As usual it is not recommended to charge batteries in the mod, so make sure to buy a good quality external charger and follow the Battery Safety guidelines.

Vaporesso NRG Tank

The tank is very simple to use and no issues here.

I had no leaks at all.

Simple to fill and the coil change is a doddle.

Adjust the airflow using the ring on the base of the tank. As you turn the ring you will see the airflow slot open and close.

I like a restricted DTL vape so I had the airflow almost closed most of the time.

The drip tip is an 810 standard size – but you will need to buy a drip tip with O-rings installed on it.

How To Fill The Vaporesso NRG Tank

  • On the top cap of the tank is an arrow – find the arrow and push the top cap in this direction.

nrg tank filling port

  • The tank top will swing open to reveal the filling port.
  • Add liquid to the filling port whilst watching the level through the tank glass.
  • Push the top cap in the opposite direction to close.

This is a lovely top fill system and only the filling hole is visible so no risk of adding E-liquid into the centre of the coil and setting fire to your lungs.

I will add here that the tank can guzzle the liquid and you will be tasting burnt cotton and forking out for new coils if you don’t keep an eye on the level!

How To Change The NRG Tank Coil Head

Coil heads eventually will need replacing. Signs of this include poor performance, a burnt taste or errors on the screen of the mod.

If the tank is half full or less you can change the coil without emptying. Above this level you risk some leakage.

  • Unscrew the base of the tank.
  • Sometimes the coil head stays attached to the chimney – rather than the base – so if that happens remove the head from the chimney.

nrg coil stuck in chimney

  • Or unscrew the coil head from the tank base.

nrg tank disassembled

  • Clean e-liquid from inside the base
  • Install a new coil head onto the tank base and screw into place.

nrg tank coil installation

  • Apply some drops of E-liquid to the cotton bits you can see.
  • Screw the base onto the tank.
  • Fill the tank as described above.
  • Leave the tank to stand for 10 minutes to let the liquid soak into the coil.
  • Take a few inhales without pressing fire just to suck liquid through.

Flavour & Cloud Production

Flavour and cloud production is usually dependent on many variables, including – E-liquid mixture, wattage/temp setting, airflow setting etc.

On this if using Variable Wattage you also get “Taste” modes which alter the power used whilst pressing fire.

There are 2 sub ohm coil heads included in the kit

  • GT4 – 0.15ohm dual coil head
  • GT8 – 0.15ohm quad coil head.

vaporesso nrg coilsThe kit contains a handy guide of what voltages to use for each coil when using the taste modes.

Vaporesso NRG GT_Cores

As you can see you will need to adjust the wattage according to which coil you are using and which taste mode too.

I am not used to Temperature Control or adjusting power curves so I didn’t experiment with this side of things sorry!

I am using a 80%VG E-liquid in here which is 6mg strength nicotine.

0.15ohm GT8 Quad Coil Head

I have been using this and playing around with the flavour modes, wattage and airflow. But I am slightly disappointed with the flavour.

There is TONS of vapour and this does guzzle the liquid.

In Variable Wattage Hard taste mode at 60W I was just starting to get the flavour. I found this to be the best I could get. At 70W there wasn’t much improvement for me.

On Normal and Soft modes I still wasn’t able to get much flavour.

A very airy vape so I am finding I am shutting the airflow down quite a bit. So this coil head is for the cloud hungry people out there, not as much flavour.

0.15 ohm GT4 Dual Coil Head

Aha this is much more like it! I am loving this coil far more.

Lots more flavour and good vapour – I am running this in Normal taste mode at 60-70W and it is perfect for a flavour junkie like me!

Close the airflow down a bit and it just gets better.

I like this a lot more!

After using this coil head for about 5 days it has now started to show signs of burning on the cotton and the taste is gradually decreasing. I have however been using this at the higher power end of the scale.

Battery Life

The battery life will of course depend on what batteries you use and what power you are running the mod at.

I am using dual Samsung 25R batteries and running at 60-70W and I got in total 9 hours of pretty heavy vaping.

So battery life to me is pretty good when you consider I do use the light effects too!

Pros

  • Beautiful screen.
  • Quite a funky design
  • If case gets worn or damaged you can change it.
  • Lots of vapour from supplied coil heads
  • No leaks
  • Everything worked well straight away
  • The Clock is useful
  • I really like the light effects
  • The GT4 coil head is beautiful at 70W very happy!

Cons

  • Some of the circuit board graphics are a bit tacky.
  • This weighs a ton
  • Huge mod (Some people might like this as you can use bigger attys)
  • Centre menu button makes things more long winded.
  • The grip areas on the case look like they are not fitted correctly.
  • GT8 coil was slightly low on flavour.

Final Review Verdict

Apart from the size and weight the Vaporesso Switcher is a great mod. Again these might not be a problem for most people.

Don’t be put off by the light effects as you can switch these off. Also changing the cases means this can be made to look as good as new pretty easily.

The peeling area of the grip on the case let down the look of the mod a bit and when you see things like that it instantly makes you suspicious of the build quality. This is quite an expensive mod so I didn’t like seeing that.

Otherwise the mod and tank look lovely together and are a perfect pair.

Would I buy the Vaporesso Switcher mod myself, erm probably not, it’s too heavy and large to carry round and would just be resigned to my desk for tanks which need higher power than my 80W single battery mods can produce.

I wasn’t initially a fan of the NRG tank as I have used a lot better lately – the Innokin Riptide Crios at 0.25ohm and the Freemax Fireluke Mesh – being favourites of mine.

I found the GT8 coil didn’t have as much flavour as these for me. However when I popped the GT4 coil on then I was very happy!

vaporesso-switcher-kit-reviewThis is a great kit, it really is. However for me it would be a "sat at the desk" mod due to the size and weight. I found the lights fun but you can turn them off so don't be put off by them. The vapour was excellent, taste not as good as some other sub ohm tanks for me when using the GT8 head but the GT4 head is a beauty! A larger range of replacement cases would attract more people to buy this as the graphics may put a lot of people off. I can't dislike this kit as it is a solid performer - just a bit too solid!
