Vaping Side Effects

Some Minor Vaping Side Effects But it’s Still 95% Safer than Smoking

There’s a lot of fake science and dire warnings around the side effects of vaping but not all of it is rubbish.

Indeed there are a couple of things that pretty much every single vaper out there has experienced at one time or another.

For some of you one of the main side effects of vaping can be a dent in your bank balance.

Sure most of us quit smoking and took to vaping for health reasons and we all thought we’d save a ton of money too.

If you’re happy with your one mod and tank and only need to buy juice and coils every now and then well done you and enjoy spending your extra cash!

However there are a lot of us out there that need that new shiny mod – crave that funky new tank and indeed have now become ‘collectors’ lol.

Hands up who has more than 3 mods?

Hands up who has more than 3 tanks – RDAs and the like!

So yeah for some of us the ‘saving money’ by quitting smoking can be a bit of a myth and an expensive ‘side-effect’.

And before we go any further let’s just be clear.

Vaping is proven to be 95% safer than smoking but nothing you put in your body can technically be called 100% safe.

I mean if you drink too much water in one go – water intoxication – it can be deadly.

Like I said nothing is 100% safe.

side effects of vapingHowever, armed with the facts you are then free to make up your own minds and know how to deal with any vaping side effects – which takes us back to my favourite phrase ‘education NOT legislation’.

So what are the more common side effects of vaping – are they serious and how can we lessen them?

Let’s take a look at some annoying but ultimately easy to handle side effects.

But first as disclaimer: I am not a medical professional and this article is meant as a guide. If you are in any way concerned about any side effect you may be experiencing it is important you visit your GP.

Why Do I Feel Dehydrated When I Vape?

Given the UK is currently in the grip of a heat wave if you vape it’s more important than ever to keep hydrated!

Propylene Glycol – the PG found in your e-liquid – is a bit like a chemical sponge and it will suck up moisture.

Drink water when vaping - stay hydratedSo if you’re feeling thirsty – your piddle is a darker colour than normal and obviously you’ll get that dry mouth sensation – drink plenty of water!

In fact you really should be drinking plenty of water during the day anyway – vaping or not 😉

Read more about PG and VG in your e-liquid here.

Why Do I Get a Sore Throat and Cough When Vaping?

If you’re new to vaping then chances are you will be coughing up all the crap smoking has filled your lungs with over the years – that’s a good thing and hopefully it will pass soon.

If you’ve been vaping a while and are still coughing there’s a chance you might be having a reaction to the PG in your e-liquid.

PG

PG is known to be more of an irritant to some than others and is generally what gives the throat hit many new vapers crave.

Try decreasing the PG levels in your e-liquid and take fewer puffs.

Your everyday sore throat can also be down to the PG levels as well as how you’re vaping.

Maybe you have the wattage up to high giving a too warm even too hot vape – so turn it down a little.

Chain vaping can also irritate the throat – so calm down a bit even if that juice is delicious!

Again you could be dehydrated – so drink when you vape – especially water!

If these symptoms persist and you’ve tried everything do go and see you GP!

Why Do I Get Stomach Ache/Cramps and Heartburn When I Vape?

This is probably one of the most talked about side-effects of vaping out there and strangely it seems to hit both newcomers and more established vapers out of the blue.

There’s no specific scientific ‘findings’ explaining why this happens however a quick trawl of the e-cig websites and forums throws up [not literally lol] a number of possible explanations.

Vapers tummy - Stomach ache and heartburnFirst up it could be that PG allergy again.

If it doesn’t tickle your throat causing bouts of coughing fits [see above] it could affect your digestive system.

I know for instance that our old friend Vic Mullin [Vaping with Vic] suffered awful stomach cramps during the early days of his vaping journey.

After seeking advice from friends he was advised to drop the 50-50 PG and VG e-liquid and change to a 70-30 and the cramps stopped.

However a very interesting comment on the e-cigarette forum caught my eye and it makes a lot of sense and could definitely explain why some of us more established vapers can suddenly get tummy gripes.

The post that popped out was one from user KP who suggested it’s the nicotine and e-liquid flavours playing tricks on your brain!

Bare with me here because if you’ve ever spent a morning chewing gum and your tummy has rumbled and become sore it could be down to your brain fooling your tummy its eating and to release those acid juices ready to digest.

With no food to digest the acid just hangs around causing those cramps!

KP says after seeing his GP about his vaping tummy troubles it was explained that nicotine is telling the brain to tell the stomach that food is inbound – hence the acid indigestion and even heartburn.

Now as a gum chewer and indeed a vaper that makes total sense to me and like KP says to combat this don’t vape on an empty stomach – even a biscuit or glass of milk will help!

This is purely anecdotal but I rarely if ever eat breakfast and have noticed heartburn and a slight tummy grumble/rumble after my first few morning vapes – this past two days I’ve had one of those breakfast biscuits and a glass of milk and – no pain!

So yeah it’s working for me – but as I say I’m no doctor and if you’re at all concerned and you’ve dropped your nicotine level and tried everything else – see your GP!

Why Do I Get Headaches When I Vape? Plus Dizziness and that ‘Nic Rush’

Anyone who smokes or has smoked will at one time or lit up too many cancer sticks in a short space of time.

What follows is a nasty headache and feeling of nausea that passes in time.

Something very similar happens with vapers chain-vaping on e-liquid containing nicotine.

Even a low 3mg nicotine juice can give you that dizzy nicotine ‘rush’ as your body tries to cope with the stimulant [nicotine] as it floods your body.

Given nicotine and its affects are closely aligned with caffeine – you get the same ‘rush’ and dizziness from too many coffees and energy drinks in a short space of time.

If you’re not chain vaping and still getting a ‘nic rush’ then time to look at the nicotine strength you’re using.

It’s normal for new vapers to begin at higher levels such as 12mg right up to 20mg.

You may be surprised as to how quickly your body realizes it doesn’t need that high level – so start to lower the nicotine levels quite quickly into your vaping journey.

Why Can’t I Taste My Vape Juice? That Could Be Vapers Tongue

One of the first things I noticed a couple weeks into packing up the roll-ups was I hated the taste of strong lager!

How the hell I’d been drinking that stuff for decades I have no idea – it was foul – but it shows the effect smoking has on taste!

vapers tongueI’m now an extremely happy real ale drinker and I can thank my taste buds being kicked back into life after all those years of smoking!

However for some of us the dreaded vapers tongue can hit out of the blue turning the taste of our favourite e-liquid into an extremely bland tasting experience.

I seem to have been plagued with ‘vapers tongue’ over the years and bloody annoying it is too.

However, it is a great time to use up all those e-liquids you don’t really like and given I don’t seem to like many at all – I have a ton in my cupboard 😉

OK, so taste doesn’t just come from the tongue – the nose plays a big part too.

So if you have a cold or some other kind of infection than it stands to reason food – drink and your favourite e-liquid is gonna taste funny or of nothing.

With a cold or illness you just have to wait it out – but if the vapers tongue fairy visits overnight there’s a few things you can do that may help alleviate this most annoying of all vaping side-effects.

  • Try a strong menthol e-liquid
  • Suck on strong mints
  • Nasal inhaler
  • Drink water
  • Sniff coffee beans
  • Tongue scraper or mouth wash

Any other side effects from e cigs you have encountered? Let us know in comments – no matter how weird!

Whilst these won’t work for everyone anecdotal evidence suggests some or all works for many – but time is your best friend here.

Once again be careful here because if there appears to be no obvious reason why you have a loss of taste and even smell for everything and it lasts a long time – check with your GP!

What vaping side effects have you experienced? Let us know in the comments below.

I have simpler vape tastes these days - I never leave home without a Caliburn G, a Vaporesso Luxe 40 or Innokin EQ FLTR and a CBD vape pen or bottle of CBD drops in my rucksack...or indeed an Aspire Nautilus Prime X in my pocket... At home I'll be using various mods topped with the GeekVape Zeus X RTA or the Signature Mods Mono SQ topped with the Augvape BTFC RDA... I'm a former journalist and now a writer and sometimes author... I'm ex Army - adore dogs and never happier than hiking over the hills or with a good book on a beach.

  1. I spent 5 days in the e.r. and I’m convinced after reading the comments section here that my bloody diarrhea is from vaping. They told me at the hospital it was most likely a stomach bug but since I’ve been home I was getting better until I pulled out my vape this morning and I’m right back to square 1 on dysentery

  2. I get a sore shoulder by but I have a bad shoulder quick blame vapes. The thing that get me is the government saying it’s bad people are dying how many die from normal cigarettes millions more so there taking them away from us dictatorships or what if there all so bad why not take them all away oh don’t forget sugar salt it’s all about TAX plain and simple, don’t think k for a second they give a st about you they just want more money and are losing billions in revenue FACT.

  3. I’m having really bad symptoms it started like the vapers tongue and now cracks the side of my mouth it does not heal and burns like hell sometimes also when i brush teeth it’s a burning in my whole mount and my tongue burns for some time, my stomach feels a burning sensation the whole time, my throat is sore when i swallow that is causing me to not want to eat that much. I started vaping to stop Smoking cigarettes don’t feel it was such a good idea although there are some better benefits that smoking but still would prefer neither.. :-/

    • What type of e-liquid are you using?

If it is high in PG you could be intolerant to PG and need high VG e-liquid and a set up to suit.

Also if high nicotine strength this could make you feel rough?

      • Can PG effect breathing as I quit cigarettes to chose the healthier option? Vape of course.but 3 weeks now on my vape nic salts 20mgs 50/50 and my chest hurts and its tightness I’m always needing my inhaler. When I smoked cigarettes I was never this bad nothing like this at all!!

    • Oh my gosh that all sounds so unbearable, and I am sorry that you’re going through it. I’ve noticed nausea and burning myself and it is what made me look up this article in the first place. You said that you started vaping to stop cigarettes, so I would like to ask when you made that switch and do you have a goal to quit smoking permanantly? In the end we are putting toxins in our bodies which are made to breathe air, so we have to change our habits if we want these symptoms to stop. Im personally on my last cart, my weaning is almost over haha. But I know there are a lot of other issues Im going to have to face without the crutch, but if I can do it, you can too <3 You deserve to be taken care of and I hope you the best in your healing from all that pain you described.

  4. Swallowing air can cause issues in the GI tract. I’ve realized I’m doing this with the vape. With a cigarette, you take a puff to mouth and then inhale from mouth to lung. But with many vapes, you get a rich flavor inside your mouth (juice) before you inhale to lungs. Apparently, I’ve been swallowing the air along with a bit of the juice-flavor instead of inhaling it completely. That air going into the stomach causes distention, bloating, excess flatulence. And the juice going in appears to be causing me acid reflux and esophageal inflammation.

    • That is exactly what I have going on. My tongue is constantly burning as well as my stomach and I have the most terrible acid reflux. I guess I’m going to have to try to stop vaping because the pain is killer. Good luck to you!

  5. This is in no relation to anyone else’s comments but I have circulation issues in my legs and it’s in my legs at night when I lay down I’ve researched it and there seems to be findings with this linked to vaping I’ve noticed it goes away a bit when I slow down but haven’t heard anyone else say this happens to them when they vape… Anyone have this happen? And I notice the flavors give me the digestive issue not the straight nicotine !

    • Of course it’s related – how can you have done research and not discovered this? Nicotine is terrible for your circulation (doesn’t matter whether you smoke it, chew it, or vape it). Dunno whether you already had bad circulation or whatever, but the only way to improve it at this point is to cut down on vaping (ideally quit). If you’re not already active it would also help you to work out daily. Even just walking daily could help improve it.

    • I just started vaping to stop chewing and my legs have felt swollen and achy. I’m guessing from poor circulation.

    • I get the same omg I never said nothing as I didnt want to sound stupid? Wow cramps in my calfs, nights are horrible it’s like shooting sharp electric sensations I get running up my leg to my hip also last night it was painful, also I get very bad stomach churning reflux, but circulation I feel ya I’m the same.

  6. Gidday, I’ve been vaping for 3 years now and these last couple of weeks I’ve been getting real bad acid reflux.. so i decided to give up vaping. It’s now been three days without it but i still have this ongoing symptom.. it’s terrible..

    • I quit vaping a few weeks ago (vaped for eight years). Since quitting my “dry eye” went away, as well as intermittent bouts with GERD and stomach bloating. My sinus is also so much better! I really enjoyed vaping; however, the negative effects over time became so debilitating that I decided to stop and am glad I did.

  7. No idea if this is even related to vaping or not. Been vaping for 3 years now. I use Nic Salts and have tried 25mg to 50mg. As you know Nic Salts is a higher mg than regular vape type juice due to the delivery? Not 100% sure on that. Anyways, over the last 5 months, been having some bad neck stiffness and upper back pain. No cough or anything, just my muscles always need to be stretched out. Had an MRI of the neck and it has some disc bulging and some spinal stenosis I am 51 years old as well and am not a big active person and not overweight. Doctor just said it can happen to those that are fairly sedentary as well. Nothing that requires surgery.

Of course if I type in Google “Can Vaping cause back pain” I get over 1k pages worth of chiropractic warning messages. Most are lower back, but mine is upper back and neck. I figure it is standard for Chiros to preach about most things related to whatever you put in your body and they want business etc. But wanted to run it past others and see if you had anything similar. I will experiment a bit and cut back on vaping and see if it helps some. Tried cutting back to 25mg from 50mg to see if it helped and it has not yet. Good days and bad days on the neck/back issues. Cut back a bit on the number of vape hits as well, still pain off and on.

Anyone else have issues like this?

    • Yes, Mr. Phillips, this is true.
As an ex-vaper myself, which I only tried it for 6 months, I did my own research.
And, there is a correlation between the chemical I. The vape, and the toxicity of the nicotine, which degrade the bones overtime, leading to osteoporosis and other illnesses.

    • I had the exact same thing. I changed back to regular juice from Salts and switched back to my normal shop. Symptoms gone in 2 days!

    • Hey just read your comment and completely relate to everything you said. Upper back paid, particularly my right hand side around my shoulder and neck. I too been vaping for about 3 years and I’m pretty sure there’s a correlation. Well, I’ve quit vaping recently so will update if I notice any improvements over the next few months, fingers crossed my back and neck go back to the way they were.

    • I had a terrible sore neck when vaped for a short time a few years ago. I gave up, but the sore neck remained for at least a month maybe longer.
I’d gone from smoking 2 ciggies of a night, then switching to a vape @ 4% which is crazy strong. Used to get major head rushes if I took a strong hit.

  8. ive been a smoker for 60 years , 3 months ago i just decided to e vape . all was going well untill a couple of weeks ago and everything i eat taste like salt my mouth gets very dry and feels sore . ive tryed different flavours but only like nicotine i use 12 mg, ive changed pods and liquids and always makes sure the pods have liquid in them but i feels like im sucking on a battery. any advice welcomed .. linda

    • If you got any news on that please share! Same problem here… I’ve been vaping for years.. And now every time I attend to go back to vaping, all is good for about a week of use and then every draw feels and tastes bad.

  9. After 33 years of smoking cigarettes’ I’ve been able to stop them completely by switching to vaping. yes, I used 50 mg nic salts and have experienced IBS symptoms since I have diverticulosis but very happy with the results. It’s everyone’s choice.. many say one should quit cold turkey but I simply cannot. I started getting the soap taste with my juice and now combining flavors and after those are gone I’m lowering my nic intake to 30 or even 10. Plan to be nicotine free in 6 months max. I am so glad vapes have evolved to what they are today and giving heavy smokers the opportunity to quit. Good luck to everyone on their journey and let’s overcome the side effects as well!

  10. I read a large number of comments I hope someone finds this useful and I think it’ll help me vent but I have never truly smoked in my life and I am relatively young and I am experiencing these symptoms much the same bouts of vomiting abdominal pain etc I am not sure if cold turkey to nicotine does this however I have basically swapped from 50mg affinex liquid to an thc liquid and still hav the same problems so I am not sure if it’s the cold turkey from noctine or if it’s the thc liquid I am using both are reasonable results and I have tried to figure out which are causing my symptoms but to no avail. I don’t expect pity I am actually relatively happy and it is entirely my choice to continue vaping however I am curious as to what it would be

  11. Thank goodness I’ve read these comments. I’ve wondered why my stomach is bloated so much and terrible cramps. I’ve been vaping for 1 year now and I think I’ve found out why its happening.

  12. Hello,

I started vaping 2 years ago to quit smoking. Worked very well, and I love my vape. I was having some issues with incontinence/ibs before vaping but I never experienced abdominal pain, and the urgency to go to the washroom so much and so bad before. I’ve done every test possible and my doctor doesn’t even know what to say to me anymore. I’ve been on a gluten free, dairy free, everything free diet for a year and a half but I’m still in pain, bloated, lethargic, and always worried about not making it to the washroom in time. I’m now wondering if this is something others have experienced from vaping? Could this be the problem?

    • Sorry to hear this – sounds awful for you 🙁

I’m not a doctor so really wouldn’t like to comment – but do look into if you may be allergic to PG – though I doubt very much it could cause such dramatic symptoms….but you never know…

      Good luck…

    • Hey

I have on the same page as you are. I really hope I could vape but doesnt work because my IBS starts acting up again. I have not found anyway to solve this other then to quit vaping.

I am no doctor but maybe PG is used as anti constipation medicine and thus makes it hare for the gut to keep up with it.

    • Hi Anna,

I have exactly the same problem. 6mg fluid and for the last 18 months I too have had horrific abdominal pain which has been rules out by pretty much every test out there. Are you still the same?

    • Any success in finding relief Anna? I have a very similar story. Quit cigarettes in June, dabbled with a vape off and on. In October, I started with the very frequent loose stools, actually incontinent a couple times, and nausea. My stools are slimy, oily. I’ve had a couple episodes of vomiting. I’ve seen a few doctors, had lots of tests done. Nothing conclusive. Tried gluten free. Do not want to lose more weight! I definitely have been using the vape more since this all started. So thats the next thing I give up. I hope you have found relief.

    • Funny you should say that, yeah I’m having the problem of needing a wee more and not being able to get to the loo in time. I thought that it was just due to me getting older. I have always had unstable bowel movements from not going for days, to then a few times in a day. Since vaping disposable vapes I have major stomach churning, wind and really watery poo which I can’t always get to the loo in time so liquid poo myself. Thought it was me developing ibs as I don’t have a gaul bladder, I get major constant heartburn and bloating as well. Even though I am on anti reflux meds. Thought that I was eating the wrong things so cut out dairy products and even stopped eating for a few days in case of a tummy bug to starve it, but nothing has changed. I now know that it might be down to vaping, but got docs on Monday, so will see what they have to say.

  13. i had issues with high PG juice back in the day (most of them were 70%PG/30%VG)
and thus i went back to smoking
and then turned to dry herb vaporizer thanks Phillipe Morris … you IQOS are too expensive, yeah i know … most DHV mention “not for tobacco usage” (more likely to not upset big tobacco actor and step on their HeatNotBurn product packed full of the same additives that their burn cig have) …
got on for a time using local tobacco with 0 additives, throat hit being a little harsher than cig i then turned to high CBD strain trims/leaves but then again … started to roll some cig throughout the day
back to vaping (keeping the DHV for CBD from time to time)
nic salt and ejuices to my liking in ratio of 80/70VG with a Geekvape Aegis Solo + Cerberus tank, no more PG issues…

well i got the standard “PG issue” got over it by reading that article … thanks a lot!

  14. Whenever I hit my vape in the morning my throat gurgles, it only happens in the mornings though and the rest of the day its fine. Anyone know why that happens? I haven’t found anything on it

    • I have this too! occasionally when going to bed too. sometimes its like popping and crackling in the lower throat

  15. My husband snorts all the time everytime after he vapes. It is my pet peeve and the most annoying habit he also has heartburn a lot. Do you think the vape is causing is snorting habit.

    • I have absolutely no idea if vaping is making your husband snort! Made me laugh though even if it’s annoying to you 🙂 Sorry I can’t help…maybe get some ear-plugs 🙂

  16. Neil, great information. Last year I tried a new sub-ohm setup (Horizon Falcon King/Vandy Vapes mod) which seemed fantastic.

I had primarily been using above ohm MTL setups and wanted something “cooler”. After using this setup with I think a 0.3 ohm coil and some various juices I started having serious bathroom issues.

I didn’t notice any unusual cramping but definitely had consistent urgency to run to the bathroom daily almost a scene from Dumb and Dumber.

I moved to a pod system with nic salts and haven’t had the problem since. I’ve wondered if the correlation was with allergy to the PG/VG blend or possibly the fact that with sub-ohm the user “ingests” so much more PG/VG.

Almost as in “drinking” small amounts of oil which would explain the quick digestion, if you get my drift. Has there been any studies or tests of actual amounts of e-liquid oil ingestion on sub-ohm versus vapor from above ohm using salt nics?

  17. Just want to start out by saying.

There is a reason UK hospitals are opening vape stores INSIDE hospitals. Also to some of the comments on here please be informed, read and actually look at what your reading when it comes to studies people are talking about… how was it done. Who did the study, what was used, how was it used.. Don’t just look at the fear tactic studies and then continue to spew false crap.

I am back on vaping cause I was dumb and started smoking again for 2 years again (previous time I quit I had smoked for 23 years) yes I’m having tight chest so on so forth. Yes I’ve gone to the DR and you know what it is? Biggest thing…

Quitting smoking causes most these effects for me. Dr confirmed. Nothing wrong with my lungs or the amount of o2 I’m getting.

    Heres my run down.

Quitting smoking causes my reflux to increase (smoking also causes reflux, well nicotine does for sure), which irritates the lungs via acid finding its way into my airway.

So when I vape (even if I smoked a cig) same result heavy chest tight chest. Other symptoms, random sharp pain here and there, different areas back, sides etc. Again Smokers flu. Tingling hands here and there (improved blood flow).

Random aches and pains tight muscles so on so forth.

All this caused by quitting smoking (EVEN THOUGH I’m still getting nicotine) my body is detoxing said my DR, I agreed.

    I’ve gone through it before.

Worse part is I can go through this for up to 6 months. There are people that vape and quit smoking, there are people that just quit smoking cold turkey and get none of this.

Then there are people like me that it just hits everything, including my thyroid that goes inactive when I smoke and starts slowly working when I quit, which causes a ton of other issues.

The fact of the matter is people, it’s scary when you feel things that just feel wrong and if you truly think its vaping it could be PG, VG, nic etc etc etc. I’m not a Dr, thats your choice.

I’m posting this for those that feel this stuff and can relate but the end result is QUITTING SMOKING hurts period for most. You’re gonna have pain / aches / bloating so on so forth (again majority of people not all) detoxing sucks.. and if your vaping think of it this way your going from 7000 chemicals (PER cig) down to lets just say 8 or less (cause depending on the flavor of said juice you can have a tonne of different flavors within said juice) that in itself isn’t gonna be pain free for most…..

It can be a week, 2 weeks, a month or my longest was 6 months. But once things heal theres a better side .. its just getting there.

Again I’m posting this for people to see my experience.. End result you think somethings wrong. GO to the doctors tell em you vape bring the vape (as I did) and get checked.

I got scopes up and down, I had scans, x-rays, CT’s, specialist, they did the works on me, probably cause my Dr was anti vaping and wanted to prove something. Who btw is no longer anti vaping and said my case caused him to really look into it and now wishes he could recommend vaping (by law he cant). That is why my current situation I’m not concerned (all testing was done last time I quit)

I went to the Dr recently for current issues and its all the same.. Smoking causes so many changes in your body that happen over time.. quitting has to undo all that theres a reason so many fail at quitting..

    • I’m experiencing similar mate.3 weeks of cigarettes I no it’s not long, but been vaping and I like it.
But the past 3 days my chest is tight I been coughing alot. Reflux pain. Heart flutters I think that was a heart attack? But was just palpitations.and my chest seems to go from side to side.back to front. All different parts get all like a kind of sore? Not really sore but a weird sore! Hard to explain only if u experience u no! But chest tightness yes I’m asthmatic!! When I smoked cigarettes I always had tightness in chest after a cigarette but not as tight like I get now with VAPE! I dont understand this. Its supposed to be better for you. My doctor said my asthma inhaler probably is causing my heart flutters as I have been using it more. And its maybe the time of year with my asthma ontop I dont no? I do think personally I have still lots of tar and gunk still in my lungs from 23 years of smoking and its needing to come out.it could be that.ive only been vaping 3 weeks today.
I do 90% think I’m having lots of reflux as I have lots of wind lol and when I take gavisgone it helps short relief only! I am still abit worried as I get pains in my chest,I do vape alot but it’s hard as i am a ex smoker. What advice would u give buddy

  18. Hi there, I’ve been experiencing extreme abdominal pain, cramps, nausea, dizziness, and passing out. Ice had multiple tests, including ultrasound and ctscan but noe im wondering if it could be from vaping. Im using the caliburn. The doctors can’t find anything wrong and even a morphine iv drip did not help much. Im looking for answers anywhere now haha

  19. I started vaping about a year ago and have been back and forth with that and cigarettes since then. I don’t vape A LOT, but every time I inhale (when I am vaping), I get a stabbing pain. However, I’ve done a lot of hiking and activity within the last year, and I haven’t had any issues with that. Why is it that it just seems to happen when I am vaping??

    • Hi Maddie, if the stabbing pain is in your throat then it will be because you need to adjust your inhaling technique to the device you are using.

If you’re used to cigarettes then you’ll need to look for vaping devices that are design for mouth-to-lung (MTL) inhaling, these replicate the style of cigarette smoking where you first draw the vapour into your mouth and then down into your lungs with a second inhale.

Direct to lung vaping devices are designed to be used more like a bong (that’s the closest example I can think of) where you inhale everything straight down into your lungs with one breath.

You may also want to try e-liquid with nicotine salts as these have a much less harsh throat hit compared to regular (freebase) nicotine.

  20. hi there! my names sydney. i’ve been vaping for about 2 years now and for about the past 8 months i’ve been suffering from extreme bloating, stomach cramps, and little appetite. my mind started wandering to the dark side of potential causes but now i’m thinking could it be the extra air intake everyday through the vape on an empty stomach or the xylitol that is affecting me? either way, i’ve been using Lava 2 lately and i’m wondering, with your expertise, what alternative i can try so i don’t feel so awful. due to the bloating i’ve cut back on eating A LOT bc it’s uncomfortable, but i’d love to have both food and a vape in my life. lol, thank you neil

    • HI – I’ve never used a Lava 2 pod kit – but a quick Google tells me it’s 50mg nicotine – so that could be your issue right there! Plus I’m guessing it’s 50:50 PG/VG – so maybe try a nic salt? They tend to be smoother at high nicotine and may help 🙂 But it is best to vape on a stomach with something in it – even a cup of tea and a biscuit 🙂

    • Hi Sydney I’m so glad you spoke up about the BLOATING!!
I am on here because I’ve been smoking for two years and just changed to Lava Flow 35 Nic. It has caused me to be gassy as hell and after I eat I feel totally distended and my stomach is noticeably larger. It’s also made me feel more groggy and unmotivated like it dampens my mood even when I’m happy. I swear it’s the lava 35 nic. The puff bars never did this to me 😭

  21. Thanks for this post. Ive been vaping off and on for almost 8 year and have struggled a lot with stomach issues and I realized that I still smoked hookah during these times and that it happened less when I wasnt vaping also. So i stopped. I read this and have been way more avid about water and eating while vaping and today I wasnt and boom stomach issues again today. So i knew it was something to do with the change but I needed something to confirm or at least mention that it could be true. I was about to give up but now Ill just try to remember to eat more. I have a habit of eating no breakfast, then a big lunch and then a snack or meal closer to bed time. So i spend most of my day vaping on an empty stomach.

    • Glad we were able to help! It’s amazing how the simple things can make a big change 🙂 Thanks for the comment and enjoy your vaping 🙂

  22. I have taken anti depressants and mood stabilizer medication for around 20 years full time. I started vaping on a regular basis around 5 years ago and started suffering from severe anxiety so I stopped and the anxiety went. Recently I started to vape again and guess what, the anxiety returned. I have done some research and apparently you should not mix vape with anti depressants as it increases dopamine levels to anxiety level. So, if you, like me have wondered why you feel anxious try putting the vape down and smell the coffee.

    • Sorry to hear that…but very many thousands maybe even millions don’t have those side effects…take a look at our guides…and good luck 🙂

  23. When I taken a smoke from my ecig am breathing in cold air but breathing out warm cold you tell why this is thanks?

    • It sounds like you may be vaping at a lower temperature than your coil requires…more info would help – what device/tank/pod/e-liquid are you using what is the coil and what is the min/max wattage for your coil…

  24. Thank you for that article it was very helpful. I am a habitual vapor. I buy the disposal pens normally 5mg strengths and they are perfect for me. To give you an idea of how much I smoke, I go through one of those pens a day.

Just yesterday I was struck with they worst stomach cramps. They seemed to be above my belly button and it felt like I was being stabbed. My husband almost took me to the hospital but I ended up falling asleep, only to woke up to the same pains. My question is, could this be from vaping? I’ve had my appendix out and none of the pain comes with a fever or anything like that. It’s just stabbing pain. Any help would be so appreciated.

    Thank you kindly,

    Amy

    • Hi,
I have been going through similar issue turns out smoking these disposable pods have tons of sugar in them which ends up in stomach and ur liver does not like it while breaking it down and it gets stored, giving u a non alcoholic fatty liver and stabbing pain i’m also experiencing the same its above belly button right side of abdomen behind ribcage.

  25. One of the main reasons I started mixing was to reduce pg and control th. What works well for me is using salts to reduce th and dw (distilled water) to replace pg and not have the “heavy lung” feeling from max vg juice.
Another good tip is don’t vape laying down to avoid gurt attacks or simple indigestion.

  26. I’ve been smoking for 37 years and recently gave up and started vaping . Since starting caping I’ve had terrible tingly pins needles in hand feet etc , this has definitely started since vaping as I never had this problem before . I halved the nicotine to 10mg but still the same . Thought I was doing well ditching the cigs but this vaping is definitely making me have pins needles

  27. I have been vaping for the last 7 years.. Maybe more… I have now given up… I felt a bit of a wheeze towards the end of my vaping habit… I vaped for another 3 months then gave up. I have been vape free for 3 weeks now and I feel that I may have damaged my lungs. It feels like I don’t get a normal amount of oxygen on the initial flow of air…. I have what seems like a permanent wheeze that only subsides after a very long walk out in the open. On rest the wheeze seems there and feels like I don’t get the usual amount of 02 when I inhale….. I will report back here.. But atm I really feel I may have done permanent damage to my lungs

    • Hey friend, I don’t think you’ve done any permanent damage, I notice a slight wheeze every now and then, I vape (considering tossing it as I write this comment) 50mg salts, but I have coils that allow me to cloud them. So I get that wheeze infrequently but enough for me to have noticed it. I generally take long hikes during the spring/summer/early fall and like you said it goes away, but it goes away for me until I vape another 4 months, I generally do 15Mi(24Km) hikes.

    • What is your health situation and how much do you weigh if you dont mind me asking? Do you exercise at all? Need more info

  28. I smoked for 25 years and quit almost 4 years ago. I started vaping and that allowed me to put down the cigs. Earlier this year I started having really bad stomach pains. I have had every test imaginable and the doctors found nothing. I decided to see if it was the vape that was causing my problems. After 1 week of not vaping my pains are gone. I never thought it could be the vape, especially since I have been using it for almost 4 years and my pain only started this year.

    • I’m not a doctor, but I’m pretty sure one of the allergies from the PG in some e-liquids can cause a tummy upset…maybe try 100% VG or at least juice with higher VG…hope that helps 🙂

  29. Vaping and smoking both cause DNA to be corrupted. Read the studies from different medical disciplines and there is no disagreement. They compromise your immune system and inhibit tissue growth for regeneration and healing. The list goes on and the evidence is there if you simply google it and read the studies from the institutes and hospitals that did them. Don’t take spin from either side. They are trying to get the facts and do not have an agenda other than to determine what happens.

    • No one is saying vaping is healthy. Nicotine is unhealthy, and since vaping is a way to get nicotine, it’s also unhealthy. But, it’s a good tool for people who are trying to overcome a nicotine addiction; because despite not being ~good for you~, vaping is still so much better than cigarettes.

  30. Thers no way that Nicotine gives old smoker reflux. This is serious problem. I quit Pg and it’s getting worse. I quit all flavours expect tobacco and toffee. It’s still getting wors week by week.

  31. I’ve been vaping 4 years now and recently started to have blocked inner ear . After many trips to doctors and sniffing vicks nothing seemed to be clearing it. I was started to get really annoyed as everyday sounds were like I was underwater. As a last resort I stopped vaping and the next day my ears cleared. I always exhale the vapour through my nose and turns out your nasal passage is kinda connected to your ears . So now I just make sure when vaping to exhale through my mouth. My earing been fine since.

    • I have recently given up smoking due to a surgery which I had, doctor was adamant that I had to so after 2 months of not smoking I have started buying a vape here and there.

Going from a packet a day smoker to a vaper, I can almost guarantee its worse than smoking, just going of how my body reacts.

I think it’s outrageous and very biased of you to make a claim that vaping is 95% safer than smoking. You obviously benefit from saying this as your page is filled with vape sites 🙄.

Sot question is, on what basis and research can you make such a wild claim?

      • I personally think think it’s “outrageous and biased” of you to say you can guarantee vaping is worse than smoking without any facts or indeed medical research and expertise to back it up…as for vaping being proven to be 95% safer than smoking, that is not a number I plucked out of fresh air to sell more advertising…it comes from a detailed study by the UK Government in this case Public Health England…you’ll be able to read the detailed evidence in the article I wrote here: https://www.ecigclick.co.uk/says-vaping-95-safer-smoking/
Incidentally, neither myself nor the majority of responsible vapers would ever recommend vaping to a none smoker…given you’d quit for 2 months due to surgery you fitted into the category…so please blame your own choices rather than those of a whole life changing/saving industry…thanks for the comment and of course the roll of your blinkered eyes emoji…

  32. I started vaping to quit smoking, and it worked! To kill the urge to go back to my pack a day habit I mixed my own e-liquid with a 14mg Nicotine ratio. I found that I wasn’t craving darts anymore but I started to have problems with circulation in my hands and feet. It was like my hands were constantly cold, so much so that it hurt. I accidentally cut my finger, it didn’t bleed for a good 20 to 30 seconds, needless to say, it scared the crap out of me. I halved my the nicotine content of subsequent batches and the problem went away. Totally non-scientific but I’m happily vaping with no cold hands/feet problems and the only variable that I changed was nicotine ratio. I’d be interested to know if that qualifies as a “Side-effect” or if there was something else that might have caused my issue.

    • Nicotine and other stimulants cause “vasoconstriction “, this means that the blood vessels narrow and reduce the flow of blood around the body. The effects are more noticeable in the extremities (arms and legs). This also reduces the oxygen levels to tissue.
The reduction in blood flow to hands and feet makes them feel cooler and blotchy or pale in colour. The nicotine levels you were absorbing were obviously too high.
      Hope this explains it.

  33. I am really at a lost as 5 weeks ago I became allergic to nicotine so I had to give up smoking 45 to 55 cigarettes per day. Now 3 weeks ago I started on Champix tablets and was told that I could Vape on 0MG Liquids and up until today I have been fine. I invested in a Smok G80 Mod Box and the minute I took a drag on the vape box I started to get a tingling in my mouth and a slight sore throat which was some of the side effects I got from when smoking a cigarette. Can you give me any pointers on what the hell is going on.
