The Horizon Falcon Kit attempts to prey off the competition by offering a multitude of coils and with one fell swoop promises to deliver a vaping experience to suit all.
horizon falcon kit reviewDid you know it’s still possible to be a newbie after five years of vaping?

Not only am I a novice when it comes to HorizonTech but I’m also new when it comes to mech “styled” intermediate vape pen devices..if in fact that is the correct description.

See? I really don’t know how to term this device!

HorizonTech are based out of the Baoan district of Shenzen and are also responsible for the Magico Nic Salt Stick pen device as well as the Magico Pod kit. (Everyone’s doing them these days), and there is also a Falcon tank (and mini tank) available in a plethitude of colour themes.

What Can We Expect From The Horizon Falcon Kit?

I’m looking forwards to reviewing my first single 18650 battery mod that features a tank with stock coils.

Like I wrote above. This is an entirely new experience to me.

So what we can expect is a battery life entirely dependant on the restrictions placed by the coil output or wattage. It’s gonna vary from stock coil to stock coil.

A device that is able to deal with any malfunction thanks to built in protection circuitry and hopefully the Falcon Kit can offer above par vape performance in both flavour and cloud production thanks to the increasingly popular mesh material used.

Despite all this circuit protection we can expect the Falcon Kit to appeal to an intermediate vaper that has adequate knowledge of batteries, safe use and as boring as it sounds, Ohms law.

It’s also good to see that HorizonTech have capped the maximum output to 80w which is around as much stress a single 18650 battery can tolerate without potential overheating issues and something that other manufacturers should really be paying attention to.

This is a non TPD compliant product (TPD Version Available) and received free of charge for the purposes of review.

Follow me on my written ramblings of a vaping style I have absolutely no experience with!

What’s In The Box?

  • 1 x Falcon 80 Mod
  • 1 x 6ml Falcon King tank (includes M-Dual coil)
  • 1 x Falcon M1+ coil
  • 1 x 5ml straight glass
  • 1 x Bag of O rings

2ml TPD Tank Version

The HorizonTech Falcon Kit comes with the Falcon King tank which is also a standalone product and is available in a further four colour schemes outside of the product we are currently reviewing.

Where the Falcon king tank really shines is in the sheer number of coil types available, M-Triple, M1, M2, F1, F2 and F3 variations.

The kit comes with the M-Dual pre-installed and a spare M1+ coil in the box.

Always use protection (The boring but important part)

For peace of mind the Falcon Kit comes with some nifty onboard circuit protection.

  • Overtime protection: The device will auto stop if vaping period exceed 10 seconds.
  • Standby protection: The OLED display shuts down after 30 seconds of innactivity.
  • Low resistance protection: If the coil resistance falls below 0.08ohm the display reads “Short” and will cease to function
  • No atomiser protection: The display will read “check atomizer” if no tank is attached.
  • Short circuit protection: Occurs when the device fails and the message ” Short” appears on the OLED screen.
  • Low voltage protection: The message “check battery” will be displayed.
  • High temperature protection: The message “Too hot” will be displayed.

Design and Build Quality

The Mod

I received the carbon black rendition of the Falcon Kit which in all truth is simply a matte black coated finish that doesn’t look up to dealing with everyday knock and bumps. Only time will tell.horizontech falcon kit mod

The fire button (located at the top) is both grippy and tactile. Some nice clicking going on and very securely fitted.

At the base of the mod and incorporating the OLED display there are a further two smaller (plus and minus) buttons which act equally as responsive.oled display on horizon falcon kit

Battery Cover

Finally we have the bottom battery cover which has relatively decent threading but I would have liked to see a few more threads for added reassurance.Battery cover

Looking down inside the exposed mod tube there’s a red + symbol indicating the positive side up and by inserting a battery and threading down the battery cover a clear OLED screen fires instantly into life. (Something that really should have been covered in the instruction manual).battery compartment

Absolutely zero battery rattle when installed and fits as snug as a bug in a proverbial rug.

USB | Charge | 510 Threading

A USB port is positioned opposite the fire button in order to charge the encased, removable 18650 battery but this is something I would not personally recommend doing.

I always use a dedicated external battery charger and would suggest the same to anyone considering the purchase of this product.

A spring loaded 510 connection is present in the top of the mod to ensure a perfect connection to the tank.horizon falcon mod 510 thread

Functions

To turn the mod on give the fire button five clicks in quick succession and to turn the mod off carry out the same procedure.

Using either of the display panels buttons ( + and – ) you are able to adjust wattage up or down in 0.5W increments but is something I don’t feel is required because it takes an age to adjust from 0.5W to 80W.

There’s no speeding up during button press but at least the mod does “round robin” allowing you to reach your desired setting just that little bit faster.

Mod Functions

  • Press and hold the plus and minus buttons together for 3 seconds.
  • To adjust Preheating power/Time setting
  • Press the fire button and + button at the same time to enter the preheat power adjustment mode.
  • Press + or – to adjust wattage
  • Press the fire button to adjust the preheat time in seconds again using the + or – buttons.

(Preheat power adjustment is something that I never use personally but of course, Horizontech have included the option if you so wish to dabble)

General screen display

  • Wattage output
  • Battery strength indicator
  • Coil resistance
  • Voltage (Only when fire button is pressed)

The Falcon King Tank

The Falcon King tank is 25mm in diameter at the base but balloons out to 28mm using the 6ml glass extension and is made of stainless steel with a black matt coating to suit the finish of the mod and features a resin 810 drip tip.

Dual bottom airflow slots mimic the action of each other while a non adjustable gold plated 510 pin connects the tank to the mod.

Just below the top cap sits a button protrusion that when pressed swings the lid open allowing for a swift juice refill through one sizeable kidney shaped port.

Installing a coil

Bamboo wicking fibres are used with these coils and is reported to be stronger and more resilient than standard cotton fibres.

It is also alleged to have longer life, better flavour and increased cloud production.

  • Unscrew the base of the tank in a clockwise motion
  • Screw the coil into the deck in a clockwise motion taking care not to overtighten
  • Screw the base back on the tank in an anticlockwise motion ensuring a fingertight fit.
  • Again, do not over tighten

How to fill the Horizon Falcon King Tank

  • Press the button just below the top cap. The lid will automatically swing open

top fill horizon falcon king tank

  • Fill E liquid into the juice port ensuring not to overfill
  • Push the lid manually back into place until it snaps closed
  • Replacing a glass tube
  • Unscrew the base of the tank in a clockwise motion
  • Remove the old glass section
  • Attach the new glass tube
  • Screw the base back onto the tank in an anticlockwise motion ensuring a finger-tight fit

How does the Horizon Falcon Kit perform?

The device has an overall height of six inches from the base to the top of the drip tip yet thanks to a slight inwards curve to the mod, feels a perfect fit in the hand. Horizon Falcon Kit partsThe matte finish provides some added grip too and the raised fire button is easy to locate without constantly having to look.

The OLED screen is clear and easy to read in direct sunlight which is a massive plus point in my opinion but it would have been nice to have the option to decide how long it stays on, allowing you to eek out that little extra in terms of battery life.

Speaking of battery life there are always a few things to take into account when attempting to gauge.

  • The resistance of the coil
  • The Power (wattage) being applied to the coil
  • Intensity of the vape ( infrequent, moderate or chain vaping)
  • Whether the device is powered off between vaping sessions

Flavour and cloud production

The Falcon King comes with a vast array of interchangeable coils, all offering different resistances consequently altering battery performance but my initial test was with the pre-installed M-Dual coil rated at 0.38ohm with an 80w max output.horizon falcon king tank coils

M-Dual Coil – 0.38Ohm

I used Mr Juicer Choc Chip Ice Cream with a ratio of 70vg/30pg with a 3mg nicotine level.

m dual coil horizon falcon kingIt took a good five to ten minutes to eliminate the raspy throat hit I was receiving from the vape even with airflow wide open but there was no nasty taste of cotton break-in which can often occur.

Maybe put this down to those bamboo fibres.

The mint was not as prominent as found on other tanks with mesh coils and the dairy content was quite lacking.

The coolness associated with this e liquid was however present.

Cloud production with airflow 1/3rd open was adequate but really came to life wide open and the flavour remained consistent, albeit somewhat muted.

Vaping this coil at 50w / 4v (I found this to be the optimal performance level for me) I was able to achieve six hours from a fully charged 18650 battery while rather curiously the actual coil resistance came in at 0.32ohm and eventually settled at 0.30ohm.

M1+ coil – 0.16Ohm

The coil resistance on this is rated to 0.16ohm with a maximum recommended output of 75w.

I used The Yorkshire Vaper Gaffer Vanilla which is another 70vg/30pg mix.m1+ coil horizon king tank

The best performance was at the 70W mark with airflow half open giving me just enough restriction to balance flavour and cloud production.

I suffered with the same raspiness on the throat as before but only while the cotton was breaking in and again this swiftly departed.

And what flavour!

The creaminess of the custard arrived in spades, topped off by a gentle back note of vanilla that is light and perfectly defined. The flavour tones lingered on the taste buds long after that final exhale.

I would have to go as far as to say this is one of the best sub ohm stock coil tanks I’ve experienced.

Yup! Really is that good, and completely eclipses the M-Dual variant.

Cloud production was also dense and only added to the satisfaction of the overall vape, which at 70w ensured just the right amount of warmth for a custard based profile.

Battery Life

The battery lasted for around 4 hours with moderate/heavy use before snuffing it and again the device registered the coil rating differently to the manufacturers specs. Little niggles to others, significant enough for Negative Neil.

Thoughts and opinions on the HorizonTech Falcon Kit

It’s quite a tall bugger and certainly the weight means I won’t be found carrying it around in my pocket but the added clout also means it feels substantial, yet comfortable in the hand thanks to some nifty curves on the mod.

The overall build quality on the Horizon Falcon kit is very good.horizon falcon kit quality

I’ve yet to scratch it up so that renders my initial thoughts null and void. The exaggerated knurling also means that airflow adjustment is a doddle with just the right amount of tolerance when adjusting.

Removing and replacing an 18650 battery is pain free thanks to some good thread work on the bottom cap and there is absolutely no rattle when secured.

The fire and adjustment buttons are very clicky and responsive, activating a screen both large and bright enough to be visible during outside use but by far the most impressive feature is the one that every single vaper out there is waiting for me to write of…

Nope! It ain’t the flavour although it gave me a tremendous amount using the M1+ coil.

Leaking. Not One Drop. I never thought I would see the day! Whether left on its side, held at an angle, vaped to high heaven it’s still able to deal with everything. There’s not even any condensate present.

I’m split as far as the included coils are concerned. The M-Dual coil under performed which was a let down and power adjustments either side of the 50w region either made things worse or just warmer losing what muted flavour I was already receiving.

The Falcon King tank came to life with the M1+ coil and pretty much made up for its partner in crime.

Fantastic flavour and cloud at 70w, dare I write on par with some of the best RDAs out there? Yeah. I just did!

Pros

  • Tactile and responsive fire and menu buttons
  • Ergonomic shaping of the mod
  • Easy to fill top cap mechanism
  • Bright OLED screen. Easy to read
  • No battery rattle
  • This tank does not leak
  • Minimal break in time with coils
  • Incredible flavour from the M1+ coil

Cons

  • Top cap fill mechanism is a bit lively (subjective con)
  • Coil resistances differ from those calculated by manufacturer
  • USB charging (Subjective con. I just don’t recommend using it)
  • Not all of your 810 drip tips are going to fit

Final Verdict

Outside of a few niggling Negative Neils there is very little to fault about the Horizon Falcon Kit.

The mod and the tank have been specifically designed to work in harmony, that much is clear and the single 18650 battery won’t be put under stress simply because of the limitations of the coils themselves.

I would love to see how the other compatible coils perform because it looks like they are designed for specific users in mind.

I personally found the M1+ coil to perform exceptionally well indeed.

As much as I hate to bring it up, I really wish instruction manuals were brought up to date when it comes to using external batteries. There just doesn’t seem to be enough awareness of their safe use across the board but particularly in the case with this device.

Is the Horizon Falcon kit a device I would buy?

Having spent enough time with it most certainly yes. There’s not much that can go wrong with it.

The top fill system works a dream with little chance of having hands covered in e-liquid (hate it when that happens) thanks to the spring loaded mechanic employed and it doesn’t leak a single drop.

I know I’m making it sound more like a gush fest with every time I mention it but for this reason alone my faith in stock coil tanks has been revived single handedly by the Falcon King tank.

Would I recommend the Falcon Kit?

Definitely but to a target audience. Those that are looking to move a step up from an intermediate, all in one (AIO) internal battery device and have a degree of knowledge with external 18650 batteries and their safe use, despite the onboard circuit protection included.

To conclude, the Falcon kit is a superb piece of kit and one that I can highly recommend.

Did I mention that it doesn’t leak?

  1. I work in a vape shop so mostly use a pod system in the shop whilst I work to not cloud it out too much. When we got these in I just had to have one…
I’ve been putting it through its paces and I’m very surprised how good it really is. Normally use mechs at home or when I’m out but this is a really good vape and I too would recommend it and continue to use it on my travels.

    • The Falcon kit so much reminds me of a mech set up, Paul. Very comfortable to hold, great display and the sheer number of coils available make this one to keep coming back to. It was a real pleasure to get the chance to review. 😁
Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment.

      Kind regards,
      Neil

  2. Great review bud. I’m not really a “stick” guy. I mech tube, yes, but stick no…but this one seems like it could be a good device to try them again.

    • Thanks for reading, Ray!
When you realise how easy it is to fill, flavour intensity ( especially M1+ coil) and no leaking whatsoever we have three strong purchasing points right there! 😁

  3. It performed fantastically well, Bill.
I now want to try all the other coils for it.
Not one single leak from either of those tested is a major factor for purchasing. Thanks for taking the time to read.

  4. Nice review Neil, I am interested in this kit just as a handy out and about set up that is a bit more convenient than my bigger set ups and RTAs
It could be on my buy list at the right price
