Vaping Headlines: Global Forum on Nicotine – FDA Latest – Decline in Younger USA Vapers – Rehab for Vapers…Yes Really!!!
Fourth GFN Held in Poland
The Global Forum on Nicotine took place in Warsaw over 3 days last week and featured speakers from across the world.
The event was opened by the inventor of the e-cigarette – Hon Lik – and featured such vaping advocates as Dr Konstantinos Farsalinos – Professor Gerry Stimson and Clive Bates.
Subjects tackled included the fight against the banning of Snus – the prospects of harm reduction in countries as diverse as India – Ireland and South Africa and e-cigarette use in pregnancy and many more topics.
Louise Ross – the Stop Smoking Service manager for Leicester Council gave a talk explaining the successes the scheme has had and revealed that through vaping 512 smokers accessing the programme had managed to quit last year alone.
Chair of the event – Professor David Sweanor – a health and tobacco expert from the University of Ottawa in Canada – said 350 participants from 54 countries attended – I’ll get up a bigger article on this next week.
Latest Twist in the FDA Vaping Saga
Just when American vapers thought the so called Deeming law could be revoked along comes a bunch of Democrat ‘do-gooders’ to throw a spanner in the works.
New Commissioner of the FDA Scott Gottleib has postponed Deeming for three months saying he needed more time to look at the ‘scientific evidence’ around vaping.
However and using the tired old chestnut that ‘vaping is a gateway to smoking’ with a heavy dose of ‘we must protect the children’ – the group of Democrats has written a letter to Gottleib asking him to continue with the current policy.
The senators wrote:
We encourage you to prioritize efforts to prevent tobacco-related disease and keep tobacco products out of the hands of children
However the dynamic vaping advocacy duo Clive Bates and American psychiatrist Sally Satel have responded with their own message to Gottleib as Ms Satel reported on her Forbes blog.
The pair says the move by the Democrats shows a:
…window into a larger, national discussion about e-cigarettes that is rife with misunderstandings, warped facts, and alarmism.
As to if the letter will sway the FDAs postponement the pair are more optimistic suggesting an unlikely ally in the form of Big Tobacco:
It’s doubtful. For one thing, the agency and the Department of Health and Human Services have considerable latitude in executing tobacco policy reform. What’s more, funding for the Center for Tobacco Policy (CTP), the engine room of tobacco product regulation, is funded by the tobacco industry through generous statutory user fees, not appropriated dollars.
Fall in Number of America’s Young Vapers
The number of teen vapers and smokers in the USA has shown a dramatic fall according to a new study.
Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say 2.2million high school and middle school students vape compared to 3million last year.
Tobacco use among the teens also saw a significant decline to around 3.9million smokers compared to 4.7million last year.
The experts say the result is a ‘health win’ and suggest tighter regulation on sales to the young and hard hitting Government backed anti-vaping campaigns.
Commenting on the figures Robin Koval who produces those kind of ads said he thinks vaping among the young has been a social and experimental fad:
These products were new and novel and now we’re starting to see that change
He says the decline in young smokers has continued to fall for many years however he found the drop in the vaping numbers ‘remarkable’.
And Finally…Vaping Rehab? WTF!!!
My name is Neil and I’m a vape-a-holic.
Hi Neil – *round of applause…*
But as Amy Winehouse famously sang:
They tried to make me go to rehab
I said, no, no, no
Rehab for vapers?
You have GOT to be kidding me.
Only in America lol.
OK in all seriousness a company called Rehab Center from the US is offering ‘treatment’ for vapers who think they’re addicted.
In a quite scarily ill-informed piece on their site more worthy of a tabloid scare story – the ‘experts’ detail a whole list of side effects from vaping [large article on this coming soon] from agitation to upset stomachs.
How about this for an assertion:
…in some cases, vapes, especially those that have been modified or “hacked”, may be more dangerous than tobacco.
Umm talk about fake science lol – hacking mods and vape pens making them ‘more dangerous’???
Or how about:
Researchers also report that contained within the aerosolized [sic] e-liquid are agents that, when heated, generate a release of formaldehyde at significantly higher levels than that contained in a tobacco cigarette.
Er nope – checkout what Clive Bates has to say about this ‘junk science’ and there’s a ton more evidence out their debunking this ridiculous vaping myth!
However it’s scaring parents into thinking their vaping teen is an ‘addict’ that really sticks in in my craw.
They tell parents that ‘vapes’ are ‘easily concealed’ and with the various flavours and colourful designs are classed as ‘trendy’ to young folk.
Add to that withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety and weight gain and you’ll probably have thousands of worried moms and dads packing little Chuck off to rehab before he can say ‘Gee mom it’s zero nicotine!’
But hey don’t worry vape addicts – help is at hand – and no doubt at a cost that will dent even the toughest of credit cards:
