A Final Look at This Year’s Vape News – A Quit Smoking Special!

Vaping IS The Best way To Quit Smoking New Study Finds

As smokers around the world choose to quit smoking as their number one New Year’s resolution a new study says e-cigarettes and vaping is the best way to stub out the killer habit.

The study findings come at a time when Public Health England releases a new hard hitting stop smoking campaign and a number of UK MPs are embarrassed at reports of cosy dinners and meetings with Big Tobacco – wonder if Heat Not Burn products were discussed…

OK the study carried out by researchers at the Hollings Cancer Center in the USA found quite simply that smokers trying e-cigs were far less likely to quit even after failing a number of times.

A total of 68 smokers were tested with usage, product preference, changes in smoking behaviors and nicotine exposure measured.

46 of them were given e-cigs without any instructions whatsoever and told to use them as and when they wanted – the others were left in the ‘control group’.

Researchers discovered the majority of those in the ‘left alone’ vape group using both high and low levels of nicotine for just four months – were far more likely to go out and buy their own kits which researchers say proves smokers are looking for a ‘suitable alternative’ to regular cigarettes.

Lead researcher and tobacco control expert Matthew Carpenter, Ph.D said:

Combustible cigarettes are the most harmful form of nicotine delivery. Alternative delivery of nicotine, through e-cigarettes, could significantly reduce harm and the risks of cancer and other diseases to smokers.

Whilst this is a small pilot study – the researchers are hoping to expand on this to a larger group – it pretty much proves something I’ve banged on about for a long time now.

And that is as vapers – and before Government interference and regulations – the vast majority of us made a decision to buy a vape kit and persevere because we instinctively KNEW it was not only a much safer alternative to deliver relatively harmless nicotine – but also the closest we’d get to smoking out there.

It’s amazing how sensible we grown ups can be when left alone isn’t it lol.

PHE’s Shock Tactics To Urge Smokers To Quit This New Year

On the back of the success of the Stoptober stop smoking campaign here in the UK – Public Health England is at it again with a hard hitting thought provoking anti tobacco campaign.

This one features a man smoking outside and with each puff you see the poison from the smoke spreading through his veins.

It’s certainly a shocker but I did read about a study that showed these kind of shock to the system ads were nowhere near as effective as those of a more gentler nature.

The anti smoking ad in question featured soft music and a smoker looking at his family then his cigarette and deciding he was going to quit for them – and it proved to be far more hard hitting to those who watched it than the current rash of more distressing themes.

Any way Martin Dockrell the boss of PHE’s tobacco control team said the ad was designed to graphically show people the effect that killer tar has on the vital organs of smokers adding:

Our campaign is to add to that motivation and give extra support to people who want to quit in the new year.

Whilst not mentioning e-cigs by name – which I find strange – he did almost grudgingly give them the nod:

There’s never been a better time to quit: more people are quitting and they are quitting more successfully than ever.

Smoking has never been more unpleasant and the alternatives have never been more appealing.

By ‘alternatives’ I’m guessing he means e-cigarettes which his own organization recognizes as a viable and 95% safer viable smoking cessation tool.

Vaping IS MUCH Safer Than Smoking

Nice article written by Linda Bauld in the Guardian that’s well worth a read.

She’s – among other things – the Director of the UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies and her piece has a great line:

Although not harmless, the evidence is unequivocal that vaping is much safer than smoking. But misinformation and scaremongering could still be putting people off switching…

As I’ve always said NOTHING is harm free – but on the scale of things any harm from vaping [thus found] is going to be minimal compared to the effect smoking has so that quote whilst a positive still has a rider – or covering one’s bum as I call it.

But to be fair Linda has recognized the damaging amount of ‘fake news and science’ around vaping adding:

For the average smoker seeking information on vaping, a quick internet search offers little reassurance. Might as well continue smoking, the headlines imply, if these products are so dangerous.

But the reality is that they are not. In the past year, more than any other, the evidence that using an e-cigarette is far safer than smoking has continued to accumulate.

Whilst not exactly shouting the benefits of vaping as a smoking cessation tool from the tree-tops the article is yet another positive to end the vaping year on.

UK MPs Cosy Chats With Big Tobacco

To the Guardian again where it’s been revealed despite the UK Government’s firm anti tobacco stance MPS are wining and dining Big Tobacco companies.

It was Conservatives and a DUP polictians holding the meetings which the Labour Party said were totally inappropriate.

Labour’s spokesman on health Justin Madders told the Guardian:

Members of parliament ought to be setting a lead on public health issues and, with such a well-established link between tobacco and poor health, it seems incongruous and unsettling for so many tobacco companies to be hosting events here in parliament.

One of the companies cosying up to MPs was Phillip Morris Inc – those behind the IQOS Heat Not Burn products…

The UK Government is currently investigating the safety of HNBs so I can’t imagine what they all found to talk about – watch this space 😉
