The Freemax Twister 30W kit review and if the name rings a bell let me answer the door!

This is the baby brother to the hugely popular Freemax Twister 80W kit shrunk down in size, battery capacity and tank size.

Freemax Twister 30W Kit Handcheck

It certainly seems that Freemax has been living up to its claims of “consistently created progress based on user feedback“. The seven year old vape manufacturer was the first to launch the dual vertical deck mesh sub ohm tank.

The Freemax Gemm 25W pod kit came with what appeared to be disposable tanks, with the difference in flavour was instantly noticeable thanks to the use of tea fibre cotton.

That’s another innovation on their part and one that seems to have done nothing to tarnish their reputation as highly influential players currently within the industry.

What Can We Expect From The Freemax Twister 30W kit?

An outer sleeve that is extremely difficult to get into! lol

We’ve got all the hallmarks of a basic starter kit with some snazzy extras thrown in.

The tank features airflow design for both mouth to lung and direct lung vaping. What’s clever is they work completely independent of each other.

Freemax Twister 30W Kit Boxed

Expect the unique twist style adjuster on the bottom of the battery to dial in your sweet spot. Tea fibre cotton has been utilized once again so that should also enhance flavour.

The twister mechanic means there’s no screen display on the Freemax Twister 30W kit, but a whole host of protective measures have been incorporated into the chip. Diagnostics are visible by an embedded LED light on the firing button.

We can expect the Freemax Twister 30W kit to appeal primarily to a newer vaper seeking out the experiences of both MTL and DTL vaping.

Inside The Box

It has to be said that Freemax has done a fine job in establishing what this kit is all about, they’ve even included two drip tips as proof.

I received the 2ml TPD compliant version of the Freemax Twister 30W Kit but there’s also a 3.5ml non EU version available showing the kit with the bubble glass extension on the box.

Aside from the increased tank capacity with the 0.5ohm coil and direct lung drip tip pre installed everything else is common to both variations package wise.

It comes in a choice of solid colour schemes. Black, Blue, Gold, Rainbow, Green and the one under review, Stainless Steel.

Design and Build Quality

Mod Section

The mod or battery section is comprised of steel and has a very smooth finish overall.

I measured its height to be 78.6mm and the width to be pretty much bang on 22mm. The gold plated 510 connector pin is spring loaded with enough throw available to carry out its intended job.

Freemax Twister 30W kit battery section

At the top is the raised fire button – good to see how tactile and responsive it is. It’s the industry standard of five clicks to power on – five clicks to power off.

The battery features all the usual built in safety measures including overcharge, overheat and short circuit protection among others.

For a few examples, the led will flash white five times whenever turned on or off. It will flash red sixteen times when power has fully drained from the battery, and when plugged into a USB port the LED will flash blue five times then remain a solid red until fully charged.

The USB connector itself can also be found at the top on the opposite side of the battery.

It’s at the base where all the mechanical magic can be found and the reason why this device is named the Twister. The minimum output you can obtain is 7.5W, although you’re probably never going to use this level of power.

Freemax Twister 30W Kit twist mechanic

Twisting to the right will increase the wattage increments by 2.5W, indicated through a small viewing window measuring 5mm. There’s a distinct click for each increase you select and stopping at the 30W setting.

There’s plenty of knurling around the adjustment ring which is just as well because there’s a high degree of tolerance.

Freemax Twister 30W kit battery venting

The side of the battery features laser etched logos as well as on the underside. The underside has six pinhole battery vents which is always nice to see.

Fireluke 22 Tank

With the drip tips removed the tank measures 35.1mm excluding the 510 pin and as with the battery, pretty much bang on 22mm in width.

Freemax Twister 30W Fireluke 22 tank

Starting at the top and with the two included Delrin drip tips the MTL version measures 15.8mm in height. The DTL one has a 10mm bore with a height of 11.5mm. Dual O rings are included with both and you should be able to use your own favourites too.

Freemax Twister 30w Kit MTL and DL drip tips

The top cap spins freely preventing little fingers from entering the tank. The knurling provides grip in order to partially lift the top cap before sliding back and revealing the fill port. It’s a tried and tested approach that works very well with the Fireluke 22.

Freemax Twister 30W Kit top slide to fill mechanism
The Freemax Fireluke 22 tank features a 10mm wide fill port. Ideal for needle tip bottles.

Freemax Twister 30W – How To Fill The Tank

  • Find the red marker under the top cap of the Fireluke 22 tank
  • Lift the spring loaded top cap and and slide back at the position of the red marker
  • With the fill port now exposed gently administer E liquid into the tank section
  • Slide the top cap forwards until the top cap slips back into place

Freemax Twister 30W Kit tank filling

(When using a new coil always allow five minutes for the juice to fully saturate into the cotton prior to vaping).

The coils are plug and play and very easy to install. Just remember to align the wicking ports of the coil with the juice flow windows of the inner chimney.

Freemax Twister 30W – How To Install The Coil

  • (If attached) Unscrew the Fireluke 22 tank from the battery counter clockwise
  • Unscrew the base of the tank by turning it clockwise
  • Push the coil up an inside the chimney section of the Fireluke 22 tank
  • Screw the base of the tank back into place ensuring a firm seal

NB: Be mindful of your twister setting when installing a new coil. The power pulled from the coil is totally dependent on this, and you want to work inside the capability of the coil before you take your first vape.

This will avoid the coil from under-performing or worse still, presenting you with a dry hit! No one wants one of those.

Freemax Twister 30W Kit plug and play coils

The juice wicking ports auto close inside the chimney section when removing an old coil. Clever touch! This means no loss of e-liquid while plugging and playing.

A clever dual airflow arrangement is in place on the airflow control ring. By slowly rotating (I really wanna say twisting for some reason! lol) the ring to the right, four independent MTL slots become available.

If you rotate the AFC slowly to the right, the direct lung airflow slots become visible. Usually what happens on one side is reflected on the other – not so here. I give full credit to Freemax for a fantastic design feature.

How Does The Freemax Twister 30W Kit Perform?

I began testing with the preinstalled 1.5ohm SS904L mesh coil. It’s designed for e-liquid containing freebase nicotine between 6 – 18mg strength and nicotine salt of up to 20mg in the UK.

Freemax Twister 30W – 1.5ohm MTL mesh coil 8-12W best 10W

20mg nicotine salt E liquid was used to test this mouth to lung coil and it’s Super Berry Sherbet from Double Drip.

The widest pin hole slot provided quite an airy MTL vape making it possible to pull for a longer period than usual.

Freemax Twister 30W 1.5ohm MTL coil

A fair amount of vapour gets lost during exhale but does nothing to ruin the superb flavour the 1.5ohm mesh coil produces.

The fruity tones are bright, lively and well defined. Flavour lingers in a very satisfying manner and the overall cloud production very much mimics that of a cigarette.

Fireluke 22 tank MTL airflow

It’s when adjusting the pinhole setting to its most restrictive that a change is most noticeable. Although only marginally different the coil was now performing perfectly as a MTL.

The restriction is pretty much spot on still allowing for a comfortable vape and the flavours appear even more buoyant and concentrated.

Freemax Twister 30W – 0.5ohm DL mesh coil 15-30W Best 25W

I tested this sub ohm mesh coil using Juuce Watermelon. It’s a generic profile with a ratio of 85VG/15PG.

0.5ohm mesh coil

Before I start, I was blissfully unaware of the liquid density believing it to be a 70VG/30PG mix – my bad. That’s on me lol. I’m happy to report that this coil is more than capable of wicking efficiently under these conditions regardless.

Running at 25W, the watermelon came through rich, sharp and produced bags of flavour being consistently good with every vape. No wetness, no dryness.

With the direct lung setting at its widest I noticed the slightest of restriction, still offering up adequate vapour production during exhale. About what you could expect from a coil with a maximum output of 30W.

Fireluke 22 tank DTL airflow

Closing the airflow down to three pin holes caused a radical change of airflow. This now became a very restrictive direct lung affair but the flavour from the watermelon still popped.

Vapour production started to suffer taking on the appearance expected from a mouth to lung exhale.

Utilizing a single airflow slot simply put the vape into MTL mode.

I found that a little curious, there already being a dedicated coil and airflow structure for this particular method of vaping.

I guess it simply makes the Fireluke 22 tank that little more versatile.

Pros

  • Leak proof tank
  • Ability to swap coils with juice still in the tank
  • Child proof fill mechanism works a treat
  • Fire button and activation is extremely responsive
  • Battery life is fantastic with the 1.5ohm MTL coil

Cons

  • Twister dial can be a little stiff and awkward to adjust for some  (subjective)
  • Steel finish on battery section is easily scratched

Final Review Verdict

Once again I think Freemax has come up trumps with the use of their proprietary tea fibre cotton.

In combination with the stainless steel mesh material it clearly enhances the flavour properties of e-liquid. That’s the beauty of FM COILTECH 4.0 technology.

handcheck 2

As far as the coils are concerned I think it’s best to stick with 50VG/50PG ratios with the 1.5ohm MTL coil. It wicked perfectly and flavour was banging!

With the 0.5ohm coil although I inadvertently tested with a thicker juice ratio and experienced no issues, work between 60VG/40PG – 70VG/30PG. The reason I say that is because you’re likely to eek out a little more life from the coil.

I experienced no leaking at all from either coil and only a minimal amount of condensate inside the deck of the tank.

Battery life was insanely good with the 1.5ohm MTL coil. I got nineteen and a half hours and that’s with some serious chain vaping thrown in for good measure!

The 0.5ohm sub ohm coil fared considerably poorer coming in at seven and a half hours before the battery gave up the ghost. Of course it was pulling double the power of the MTL coil so still on par with what is expected.

Review Summary

There’s really nothing to fault with the Freemax Twister 30W Kit.

It’s the ideal companion for any vaper making the leap from a mouth to lung vape to experiment with sub ohm vaping for the first time.

There’s no cumbersome menu screens, something a new vaper will appreciate and power is handled in a mechanical way – a simple no nonsense approach.

The kit gave me no issues whatsoever. Filling the tank and replacing a coil was a breeze!

During everyday use it performed fantastically – not one single leak from the airflow ports. The only time flavour dropped was when the battery was reaching the last half hour of life.

A thoroughly good bit of kit and certainly nothing to get my knickers in a twist over!

freemax-twister-30w-kit-reviewFreemax return with a tank kit with a twist, literally. An ideal companion for those relatively new to vaping offering both MTL and DL experiences, the Freemax Twister 30W kit is equally as impressive as its bigger brother only now much more pocket friendly. Highly recommended.

  1. Great review Neil. I love the idea of hybrid tanks to help smokers get onto vaping and I’m a fan of Freemax because of the quality of their coils. I had the Mesh Pro which I still rate as the best stock coil tank I’ve ever owned by a mile so this tank is definitely on my list to buy.

Just one thing that would be helpful to know is the recommended PG/VG ratio for the coils and having just looked up the Super Berry Sherbet salts you used for the 1.5Ω coil it appears that it’s 50/50.
