Today we are looking at the Innokin Ares MTL RTA.

Update: Check out our Innokin Ares 2 MTL RTA review

Innokin designed this with the goal to be an RTA that was easy to build on, easy to fill and of course, provide a pleasant vaping experience.

But have they reached their goal? We’ll soon find out!innokin ares mtl tank review

Currently priced between $35-40 or around £30 in the UK, The Aries MTL RTA (named after the Greek God of War) is available in two finishes; Black and Stainless Steel. In this review we will be looking at the Stainless Steel version!

As always my opinions are honest and my own.

Build Quality & Design

The Drip Tip:

At the top of the Ares MTL RTA we have the drip tip. It is just your usual 510 size and made from black plastic. It’s nicely shaped and feels great in the mouth. It attaches to the barrel via two o-rings. A bit too tall for my liking. It could have done with being about a third smaller.innokin ares mtl rta components

How To Fill The Innokin Ares MTL RTA:

At the top of the tank, you will find ‘Push To Fill’ engraved into the tank. I personally think that having ‘Push to Phil’ would have been a funny addition, but I presume there’s someone somewhere that would complain that no Phils appeared when it was pushed. But hey ho.innokin ares tank top fill function

By pushing the arrow, it slides the top cap back and reveals a filling port surrounded by a silicone bung to prevent leaking. Just pop your e-liquid bottle nozzle in and fill.how to fill the innokin ares mtl tank

On the underside of the top cap, there’s also a cute little P+D in a heart. Did anyone else notice that?

The Chamber:

Emblazened with “ARES MTL RTA” on one side and “Platform Series Designed by P. Busardo & Vaping Greek” on the other. I think this is a bit too much. A simple ‘ARES’ would have done me fine, but to me it’s a bit of an overcrowded billboard.

On the inside it’s nicely domed which is apparently good for producing some great flavour…

The Build Deck & Base:

Overall it’s a nice looking deck! A simple two-post design with a centre airflow that looks somewhat like a plughole. Either side of the airflow are two notches that allow the user to drop their wicks through into the tank. Pretty similar to how an RDTA works.ares rta by innokin build deck

All the threading and milling of the deck looks to be of good standard, so not many complaints about that whatsoever.

The Airflow Adjustment:

You are met with 4 different holes ranging 0.5mm to 2mm and you can adjust to combine the different sized holes in the large airflow slot to create a more DL inhale, or use the single hole to have a varied MTL restriction.

Dimi’s Build Tool:

A little jig to help you build left or right handed spaced coils. This definitely comes in handy when building on the Ares MTL RTA!innokin ares dimis build tool

Phil’s Build Tool:

A simple, double-ended coiling jig. At one end it is 2.5mm and the other end is 3mm. Nothing special in all honesty.innokin ares rta phils build tool

The Double Ended Screwdriver:

A screwdriver with a flat and Phillips end on it. It feels pretty cheap and tacky. Almost like it came out of a Christmas cracker. A little blue one would have had a better feel to it.innokin ares mtl rta screwdriver

How Does the Ares MTL RTA Perform?

On the RTA, I have been using the included spaced coils, which come out to about 1.03Ω on the Coil Master 521 Mini Tab.

Ease Of Build On The Ares MTL RTA

Pretty damn easy, actually! Unscrew both post screws…how to build on innokin ares mtl rta

Lower your coil in and get it central then tighten down the screws!coil installation innokin ares mtl rta

Cut the legs off and job done!ares mtl rta innokin deck

Now it’s time to get that wick in there!how to wick innokin ares mtl rta

Cut it to about the same length I havewick size mtl rta ares innokin

Then tuck it down through the slots, juice it up and you’re good to go!e-liquid wick innokin ares mtl rta

One issue I did have with the deck is that when tightening down the post screws, the post doesn’t grip your coil leg enough and it tends to spin the coil in the post. Pretty damn annoying when you’re trying to get the build on there. Other than that, Building has been a breeze!

Flavour & Clouds

Ugh. And this is where the Ares MTL RTA starts to go south for me…

Innokin Ares Tesla Punk 220As you all may know, I am a menthol/coolada vaper, and I test my all day vape (Diamond Mist Toonz) on every atomiser I receive as I know what flavour to expect.

I filled the Ares MTL RTA up with some Toonz, took a few toots… Nothing. No freshness whatsoever. So I messed around with the umpteen different airflow settings (too many in my opinion) and still NOTHING.

When I vape a predominantly menthol e-liquid in a tank, I instantly look for one thing – THE FRESHNESS. This had zero freshness. It was like someone had left a cough sweet on a radiator then stuck it in my mouth.

On the flip side though, for fruits and custards, It ain’t too shabby for flavour. Nothing mind blowing, but it’s acceptable.

As for clouds, It’s pretty much standard. Nothing to write home about, but this isn’t a cloud chasing RTA.

Pros

  • Easy to build on
  • Lots of airflow options
  • Ok with fruits and custards

Cons

  • Squeaky Airflow
  • Not good with menthol/coolada
  • Drip Tip too long
  • Clamp system a bit too loose

Final Review Verdict

Overall, the Innokin Ares MTL RTA is not a tank for me. As said above, I am a fresh vape lover. 99% of the time I am vaping something with either coolada or menthol in, and this just doesn’t hit the spot for me whatsoever.

For whatever reason, it mutes the hell out of anything fresh. But it isn’t too bad with fruits and custards.

The tank is well built though. So I have no complaints about that at all. I just wish that it worked well with fresher flavours.

The Devil Vaper

Hi, my name is Dean and I have been vaping since April 2014. I decided to start reviewing back in mid 2015 as my friends kept asking me about different e-liquids I had tried and whether they were worth buying. So I thought I'd start on Instagram writing written reviews for them to read. Then several months later, I saw that people were publishing reviews on YouTube, so in late 2015 'TheDevilVaper' was born! And since then, I have built a following across social media and I'm reviewing anything from starter kits to mech mods. Budget e-liquids to premium flavours and prebuilt coils to carry cases. To me, vaping is more than just a way to quit smoking. It is now a hobby. And a hobby that I have great pleasure in doing! And if my reviews help people ditch the cigarettes, then it's a job well done. TheDevilVaper

innokin-ares-mtl-rta-reviewOverall the Innokin Ares is a nice looking RTA, but it just lacks too much in the flavour producing department for the e-liquids that I use.

  1. was testing all current MTLs.
Ares got the worst rating on flavor. No matter what coil and flavor, this atomizer underperformed Cthulhu, Siren, Berserker etc.
Additionally, there was almost incredible flavor deteriation. The flavor was average after coiling, then it got worse.
Couldn’t figure out what’s the problem, and returned it. I would love to have atomizer with such easy top fill, but flavor matters.
