What Can We Expect From The Smartbox by Innokin

At first site it looks like any other vape mod. But the Smartbox is a little different.

It features a chip that detects the resistance of your coil and automatically selects a wattage for you, offering a straight forward, simple vape.

The Smartbox also takes a single 18650 battery, which can be removed and replaced through the battery cap.

The Smartbox looks like a simple and easy to use kit from Innokin.

Lets see how it performs.

Design and Build Quality

The Innokin Smartbox kit is designed as an all in one starter kit, and is made up of the Smartbox itself and the iSub V tank.

Unsurprisingly, it’s a small vape mod, with rounded edges that sit in your hand perfectly.Innokin smartbox

It features a 510 connector so that you can use other atomizers on it as well as the included iSub V tank, and fires resistance down to 0.35 ohm with a maximum 45w output.

The chip selects the optimum power output for you, based on the resistance of your coil. It takes a single 18650 battery which is inserted via removing the twist off battery cap at the base of the unit.

An LED light around the power button shows you how much battery charge is left, and a separate LED light at the base shows you whether it is in mouth to lung or direct lung inhale mode.

You also get the Innokin iSub V tank included with the kit, which is a tank capable of using sub ohm coils.Innokin iSub V tank

That’s not to say it is a sub ohm only tank, as you also get a 1.2ohm coil head designed for mouth to lung usage, as well as two 0.5ohm coil heads designed for lung inhales.

It has a 2ml capacity, with a glass tank section, and is refilled by unscrewing the top cap and filling your juice from the top.

There are two large adjustable airflow slots, which offer a wide range of airflow options, and if you like your draw to be tight there is also a specialist mouth to lung drip tip included.

One cool feature with the iSub V tank is that it features a no spill coil swap system, so you can change your coils without getting covered in juice, simply slide them out from the base of the tank and insert a new one.

The whole Innokin Smartbox kit I feel has very good form factor, it’s still pretty light even with a battery installed, and it feels extremely well manufactured as well. Looks wise, I think it looks really smart indeed!

How Does The Innokin Smartbox Perform?

For testing I used Five Pawns Castle Long and Kingside Tobacco.

Personally, I thought the Innokin Smartbox did a really good job of delivering a consistent vape no matter what coil resistance I used.

I didn’t once feel like it was under-powered or overpowered, I just had a great vape each time from the iSub V tank.Innokin Smartbox in the hand

The different coil options with the iSub V are all very impressive.

The 0.5ohm coil head offers a nice airy vape full of flavour, and if you like plenty of vapour this is the coil for you. It produces a lot of clouds!

The 1.2ohm coil is designed for lower wattage and a tighter draw. If you close the airflow down and use the supplied mouth to lung drip tip then you can get a mouth to lung draw that has a lot of flavour!

The Innokin Smartbox takes a single 18650 battery, and you should get a full day out of one as well.

USB charging is not included so if you do need to recharge the battery you need to remove it via unscrewing the battery cap and charging it externally.

Safety protections are built into the Innokin Smartbox, you have reverse polarity protection, 15 second cut off, low voltage warning and short circuit protection.

What I Liked

It’s so simple and easy to use. Simply fill the iSub V tank with juice and vape away, the chip does a great job of selecting the power for you.

Plus swapping coils is a breeze with the no spill coil swap system on the iSub V.

This is a great little kit in hand. The form factor is perfect and it sits in your hand nicely, whilst still being small enough to pocket.

The battery cap is great, the threading here is perfect and allows you to access the battery compartment quickly.

I have been really impressed with the iSub V tank that is included in the Smartbox kit.

This is a good flavour chasers tank and puts out a really flavourful vape with mouth to lung and direct lung hit options.

What I Didn’t Like

You can’t manually adjust the power on the Smartbox, the chip automatically does it for you based on the resistance of your coil.

That’s the whole point of this mod and while it’s great for newer vapers, the more experienced users might want to fine tune their vape a little more.

There’s no USB charging port on the Smartbox, which means you must use an external charger when your battery runs flat.

The Smartbox doesn’t support temperature control, whereas a lot of Innokin’s latest devices plus others in the same price bracket do.

Again, Innokin are aiming this at vapers who want simplicity so if temp control is your thing this obviously isn’t the mod for you.

Final Review Verdict

The Innokin Smartbox is a great kit and with its mouth to lung and direct lung options, one that will cater for new vapers and more seasoned vapers alike.

You do get some very good flavour from the iSub V tank, which definitely comes in handy if you are making the switch to vaping.

The Smartbox is what it is, a great vape kit for beginner vapers. Newbies will love not having to mess around adjusting wattage settings and having a consistent vape delivered each time, however more experienced vapers may not like the fact that they can’t adjust the power output to suit their settings.

But this isn’t intended for the tinkerers out there.

As a starter kit however, this is absolutely one of the most impressive out there, and one that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

  • Easy to use kit
  • Can use other tanks with the Smartbox if you wish
  • Does a good job of selecting power
  • Easy to swap coils
  • Adjustable airflow
  • iSub V is a great tank with great flavour
  • Nice form factor
  • Smooth battery cap

Cons

  • Cannot manually adjust power
  • No USB charging
  • Power limited to 45w max
  • No temperature control support

Vaping full time since 2012, started on cigalikes for a while then curiosity got the better of me and I moved onto an vape pens, a month or two later I was seeing people walking around with these interesting shiny tubes and I thought 'I gotta get one of those'. Before I knew it a trip down to my local B&M got me my first VW mod, an Innokin SVD, paired with an iClear 30, and I was hooked. Soon after that I was jumping to VW mods both box and tube shaped, before I then made the jump to rebuilding and thus sub ohming, with my first RDA and mech mod. These days I've come back to convenience and mainly use pods, disposables and the VOOPOO Drag H40. Most importantly I am still loving vaping!

  1. Wow, Robert’s an asshole. It’s not an expensive kit. You can find it for 20-25. A little basic research would tell you that it needs a battery. Furthermore, you can find 18650 batteries all over the internet. Great little kit. Only thing I don’t like is that I believe it only does around 14W for mtl (which is fine) and then up to 35W for the dtl coils. I find 35W a bit much with isub coils. Find they vape best around 25-30.

  2. WARNING NO BATTERY INCLUDED! I was extremely annoyed to buy this to take on vacation only to find it doesn’t come with a battery. To not provide a battery for something so expensive is just ridiculous. Especially when the batteries prove near impossible to find anywhere. The shop I bought it at doesn’t sell them and I can’t find them anywhere, so it is a total waste of money. I had to buy another model at the airport as I was left without a working vaporiser. Any company that has so little concern, boarding on contempt for their customers doesn’t deserve sales of any kind.

  3. Great review as always, really like the idea of the mod setting the power, good build quality, pocket friendly to take out and about , A + Thank you
