Meanwhile Here in England Cancer Research UK Begins Major Promotion Of E-Cigarettes!
Lung cancer among American men has fallen to a record low and vaping can claim some of the credit.
Rates have fallen by a staggering 45% – in women the figure is 19% and numbers have fallen dramatically across all cancers with an estimated 2.4 million lives saved.
And the number of people dying from tobacco related illnesses could drop even more if more smokers quit and turned to e-cigarettes according to a new study released last week.
Meanwhile here in the UK the Manchester branch of Cancer Research UK [CRUK] has launched a week long campaign extolling the virtues of e-cigarettes in a bid to get the city’s smokers to stub out that stinky and pick up an e-cig!
First up those falling lung cancer rates and the latest figures are in line with a study published last year that showed the huge drop in American smokers coincided with the rise of the use of e-cigs.
The stats were released by the American Cancer Society last week and their chief medical officer Otis W. Brawley targeted smoking as the number one danger:
…tobacco remains by far the leading cause of cancer deaths today, responsible for nearly 3 in 10 cancer deaths.
Dr. Ahmedin Jemal the vice president of the Surveillance and Health Services Research Program at the American Cancer Society said recently:
We’re going to continue to see this decline because of prevention, primarily reduction in smoking prevalence.
That would be the vast numbers of smokers switching to vaping I reckon…
6.6 Million Lives Could Be Saved By Switching to E-Cigs
The recently published Annual Review of Public Health categorically states there’s a ‘public misconception’ around vaping and nicotine.
Lead author Professor David Abrams PhD of the NYU College of Global Public Health said:
Studies show that if most current American smokers switched to vaping e-cigarettes over the next 10 years, there could be as many as 6.6 million fewer premature deaths and 86.7 million fewer life years would be lost.
The safest course is to stop smoking or, better, never to start. But a harm minimization approach recognizes that demanding absolute perfection is often counterproductive and that, when a harmful behavior cannot be eliminated, we can still dramatically reduce adverse health consequences.
Based on these incredible figures let’s hope the FDA sees the value of e-cigarettes and vaping as a smoking cessation tool – because as we reported in this week’s Vaping News if more smokers in the U.S.A switched to vaping upwards of 6.6 million lives could be saved.
Cancer Research UK Heavily Promoting Vaping
Back here in Blighty and Cancer Research UK has just launched a week long campaign to convince smokers in Manchester of the benefits of stubbing out the cancer sticks and picking up an e-cigarette.
They leave smoker’s visiting the e-cigarette dedicated web page in no doubt as to what they think about vaping with the opening line:
Research so far shows that e-cigarettes are far less harmful than smoking.
This is because e-cigarettes don’t contain cancer causing tobacco. They do contain nicotine, which is addictive, but isn’t what causes the damage from smoking.
Can’t argue with that!
And remember this is Cancer Research UK – so if they are 100% behind vaping as the best way to quit the stinkies – then we know we’re winning the battle.
They also point out the myth surrounding so called ‘popcorn lung‘ – funnily enough I was discussing this only yesterday with a smoker who was convinced she’d get it – thank you media – not!
Note: No evidence has shown that e-cigarettes cause the disease known as popcorn lung. The chemical thought to be responsible for this disease has been banned from use in e-liquids in Europe.
Again you can’t say fairer than that!
There’s also an excellent short video explaining how up to date research proves vaping is far less dangerous to health than smoking – check it out below:
Local GP Dr Owen Carter who features in the campaign says:
E-cigarettes have become the most popular way to break the habit, and research so far shows that they’re a far safer alternative to smoking. For smokers who’ve struggled to stop in the past, e-cigarettes are a worthwhile option to consider, especially when used alongside support from a Stop Smoking Service.
As well as pointing out quitting smoking is the best option for your health – turning to e-cigarettes also helps your wallet!
Many people are able to save hundreds of pounds a year after making the switch away from tobacco. As with most things, some people will spend more than others. But people generally find that vaping works out cheaper for them than smoking.
Again you can’t argue with that – though if you get bitten by the bug you might end up forking out for any number of those shiny new mods lol.
There’s NEVER Been A Better Time To Stop Smoking
But in all seriousness and as you can see from the image – quitting the fags can and will save you money as well as going a long long way to lengthing your life.
There’s never been a better time to quit – go on you can do it!
