Top Evod by Kanger – A Delightful, Dainty Little Vaping Starter Kit
The Kanger Top Evod kit enters the frey of what seems to be a bit of a vaping starter kit war going on with the big Chinese vape manufacturers at the moment.
Each of them bringing out brand new models on an almost weekly basis.
As more and more smokers kick the habit with the help of vape starter kits like this one it’s little wonder manufactures are tapping into this seemingly endless new market.
And as an aside – what fantastic news this is – the more folks who quit smoking thanks to vaping – the healthier this world will be.
The latest beginners MTL [mouth to lung] device to land on my doorstep is the much anticipated Top Tank Evod from vape giants Kangertech.
I’m not a huge fan of Kangertech products if I’m honest but on first glance the Top Evod looks like a stylish little vape pen.
So let’s see if this little vape gizmo can tempt even more smokers away from the cancer sticks and into the healthier world of vaping.
In the Box
I can’t knock the packaging – the red and black slide out box looks great and the view of the device lets you see it in all its glory.
Inside you’ll find:
- X1 TopTank Evod
- X1 Evod battery
- X1 Atomizer 1.5ohm [VOCC-T]
- X1 USB charger
- Authenticity card
- ‘Filling and close top cover immediately’ warning card
- User manual
I think you’ll agree Kangertech has been quite stingy adding only one coil which is already installed.
Given this is the only coil you get AND the kit arrives partially charged DO NOT press the fire button until you’ve filled your tank AND let it soak in for a few minutes – otherwise the cotton will burn and you’ll be heading to your local vape shop looking for fresh coils!
Top Evod Specs
- Tank diameter: 14mm
- Tank capacity: 1.7ml
- Battery capacity: 650mAH
- Atomizer: VOCC-T 1.5ohm
- Input: DC 5V
- Output: DC 4.32v
First up is the Top Evod’s simplicity to use it’s just a case of filling and vaping.
The fire button is used for vaping and for turning on and off – x3 clicks turns you on and x3 clicks turns you off.
The next thing you’ll notice is how small and light the Top Evod is – it’s as light if not lighter than a decent fountain pen and to be honest it actually looks like one too.
It’s an ego style battery and charger – meaning you need to remove the battery from the rest of the kit – screw that into the charger and wait around an hour and half for it to fully charge.
Sadly this means there’s no ‘pass through vaping’ [vaping whilst charging] and as there’s no spare battery included (can be bought separately) you could be without your kit for a while.
Design and Build Quality
As far as build goes all the connections fit together well and the stainless steel despite being so light doesn’t feel cheap and plasticy.
The whole kit pretty much comes apart from cleaning and I’m pleased to say the coil was clean of manufacturing oil.
The design itself is nothing to write home about. I’ve said it before there’s not much you can do to make a vaping pen stand out – but the Kanger Top Evod does look ‘nice’.
A bit of a wishy washy word I know but there’s nothing for me that screams ‘cool design’.
In fact the exposed glass tank is a worry – I haven’t put it to the test – but I have a feeling without a small vape ring it could be vulnerable if dropped.
As I’ve said the Top Evod is on the small side to say the least and the removable drip tip and top cap are tiny.
I’d say the drip tip is smaller than the diameter of a cigarette and the top cap being so small slips between your lips [insert smutty joke here].
How Does the Kanger Top Evod Perform?
How To Fill The Kanger Top Evod
Filling the Top Evod is simple enough – simply unscrew the top cap and avoiding the central chimney drip in your e-liquid.
Screw the top cap back on and remember, let your coils sit and soak up that juice before vaping! 5 minutes should do it.
Thanks to the TPD regulations the tank only holds 1.7ml however given this is a MTL [like smoking a cigarette] vaping pen I found a full tank lasted me almost half a day with continual use.
I’m also pleased to say that unlike other Kangertech products I’ve tested – in the week I’ve used the Top Evod there’s been no leakage whatsoever.
Vaping on the Top Evod
If I’m honest it’s just OK.
The coil doesn’t give a bad flavour profile but the vapour is less than the smoke from a cigarette.
Sure it does the job and has a reasonable throat hit, but the tiny drip tip and top cap meant I had to grip it tightly to get the seal I wanted if that makes sense.
Now I’ve often been accused of having a big mouth – sometimes they’re right lol – however the Kanger Top Evod seems too small for me.
Now this is where I’m probably entering the realms of ‘sexism’ but I reckon this vape pen would be perfect for a woman looking to stub out the cigs and begin vaping.
I know not all women have small mouths – I think I’d better stop there before I get into real hot water lol – and not all men have big mouths – but;
This device is dainty and then some and therefore in my humble opinion it would suit a woman more than a man.
But hey if you’re a bloke who enjoys a small drip tip in your mouth [stop right now Neil lol] and wants a vape pen that’s delicate in your hand then go for it.
The Top Evod has neither blown me away nor put me off – it’s just not for me.
What I like
For those looking for a dainty light as a feather stylish looking vape pen I can’t knock this one.
Filling is a cinch and operating it is as easy as pressing that fire button.
It’s a decent little vape pen and available at a steal.
What I Don’t Like
I think you’ve gathered I personally don’t like the size of the top cap and drip tip.
I also don’t like Kangertech only adding one coil – come on guys you’re supposed to be encouraging smokers to quit and begin vaping.
Giving beginners a ‘little extra’ not only shows good faith – but might also let you keep their custom!
I know you have a ‘bottom line’ and all that – but for me anyway one coil is cheap on your part.
If I lost the Kanger Top Evod vape pen would I rush out to buy it again? It’s a maybe. While it certainly does the trick I may be tempted to spend a touch more for something a touch better.
- Nice design
- Simple to use
- Easy filling
- Tiny drip tip
- Tiny top cap
- 1.7ml tank – not their fault blame the TPD!!!
