There are numerous options out there when it comes to the ‘vape pen type e cigarettes‘ side of electronic cigarettes and in the past year or so we have seen more features becoming available in smaller devices.

The Aqwa Square Vari is one such example, fitting a whole host of features such as variable wattage and variable voltage into a device similar in size to an Ego battery.

Aqwa Square Vari

So this is what we are looking at today, the Aqwa Square Vari. Just to be fully transparent, this e cig kit was received free of charge for the purposes of this review! As always though I will be honest with my findings!Aqwa Square Review

In the box / Presentation

The Aqwa starter kit comes in a compact perspex box and includes the following:

  • 1 Manual 800 mAh VV/VW Battery
  • 1 aClear rebuild-able dual coil clearomiser
  • 1 Instruction Manual
  • USB Charger
  • 5ml Bottle of e-liquid

Battery / Responsiveness

For those out there that have been using e cigs for a while or those that have been shopping/researching their next e cigarette purchase then you will most likely notice that the Aqwa Square is remarkably similar to the Innokin iTaste V3!

That is because Innokin are working with Aqwa to produce their own range of e cigs and accessories.

Aqwa Square Vari Battery

This is a good thing as they are able to offer some great value packages and we still retain the quality that Innokin provide!

Anyway… Back to the review!

The Aqwa battery supplied is 800 mAh with a 510 connection and is available in 2 colours, Piano Black and Gloss White.

I was sent the Piano Black and it really is a great looking e cigarette! To add to that it feels nice to handle with the gloss giving a very smooth finish.

There is also the power button that is slightly raised and the LED screen for the function display, something I will go into more detail on a little further down this page! To finish with the branding is also tasteful and not too ‘in your face’. So that is the ‘looks’ out of the way….

As mentioned before this e cig is feature packed, first we will look at the variable voltage and variable wattage functions.

Variable Voltage

To show the VV setting (if it is not already active) the ‘-‘ button needs to be pressed simultaneously with the power button. This will show a ‘U’ on the display. To check what votage you are currently vaping all you need to do is press the ‘-‘ button down for a couple of seconds and this will show the ‘puff count’ and then the voltage setting!

To change the voltage press the plus and minus buttons when the voltage reading shows. Wow… that sounds so much more complicated than it actually is!

The actual voltage setting used is dependent on the resistance (Ω or ohms) of the clearomiser you are using as well as the juice you are vaping so you can expect this to be slightly different from my settings. This is where you get to play around with things to get the best flavour, throat hit and vapour volume.

Variable Wattage Settings

To select the wattage function it is the same process as above, the only difference being that the “+” button needs to be held for 2 seconds along with the power button.

The display will show a ‘P’ (Power), if you happen to go into double figure just the number is shown. Again the VW function is just another way of getting the perfect throat hit, vapour volume and flavour from your e-liquid.

Other Battery Features

The VV and VW are obviously the main functions on the battery but there are also some other great features hiding away in the background. These are:

  • On/Off function – A quick press of the power button 3 times will turn the battery on or off. Great to prevent any unwanted activations in your bag or pocket!
  • Pressing both the + and – buttons together and holding displays certain settings. In voltage mode you will see the Ohms reading (resistance of the tank/clearomiser attached) – Battery voltage reading – Puff count reading – Last set voltage reading.
  • Pressing both the + and – buttons together and holding whilst in wattage mode will show the Ohms reading (resistance of the tank/clearomiser attached) – Battery voltage reading – Puff count reading – Last set wattage.
  • Automatic battery cut off. This is activated once the power button is pressed for 10 seconds.
  • Battery charge level – Full/healthy charge = green, Medium charge = yellow and Low charge = red. These lights illuminate around the power button.
  • Pass Through – Can use the battery whilst charging via the USB cable.

Battery Life

aqwa square pass throughSo how long can you expect the battery to last? According to Aqwa you should be getting between 5-8 hours use, I found this to be pretty accurate, I was getting a pretty much a full days vaping before I needed to pop it on charge.

If you find you’re running low on power and you are charging using a computer then you can carry on vaping whilst it is plugged in, the USB slot is on the bottom of the battery and it the cable extends a decent length as well so you don’t need to be hunched over your computer.

This is a great feature especially as there is only one battery, it just ensures you aren’t left ecig-less!

Overall

There really isn’t anything that I can pick out as a negative with the Aqwa Square battery, it has some great functions, battery life is decent, it looks great and feels really nice in the hand.

Vapour / Flavour

This kit comes with an aClear dual coil rebuild-able clearomiser and a 5ml bottle of e-liquid, yeah not huge but most similar products on sale sell the e-liquid as an extra.

You can choose from Tobacco, Menthol and ‘Sweet’, the latter being quite a mysterious selection but if the sweet e-liquid I received is anything to go by then it’s pretty good!

Each flavour also has the option of four nicotine strengths – 0mg, 8mg, 18mg and 24mg.

The clearomiser is rebuild-able which, for those that don’t know, means you can just replace the atomiser head section of the device. This can be a good cost saver in the long run as the atomiser heads cost just £9.99 for a pack of 5 whereas if you were replacing a full disposable clearomiser you are looking at approximately £5-6+ per unit.

Again, this can seem very complicated if you have never used or come across this type of stuff before but it really is easy to get the hang of!

Filling the tanks is made easy by the design of the e-liquid bottles. They come with a needle tip that makes everything clean and simple.

So that’s what you get with the Aqwa Square Vari kit, next we will take a look at how things worked for me under the various settings!

Variable Voltage

In this mode the resistance (Ohm) of your clearomiser will affect your vape. In this case the dual coil clearomiser I am using is quoted on the UK Ecig website at being around the 2.0 ohm mark. The Aqwa is telling me the resistance of the clearomiser attached is 2.2 ohm.

The type of e-liquid you choose will also determine the voltage you choose to vape at. I am usingDinner Lady vape juice (very nice by the way!) which I am presuming is one of the choices you would get if you chose a ‘sweet’ e-liquid with your kit.

aqwa square 510 connection

Starting with the lowest setting I will go through some of the voltage settings to see what kind of flavour we are getting:

  • 3.3v (Lowest setting) – Virtually no throat hit, flavour is touching on non existent with a little vapour volume.
  • 3.8v – Nice throat hit but still smooth, good flavour and good vapour volume
  • 4.2v – Warmer vape with a touch more on the throat, flavour still there but not as clear as the 3.8v setting. Vapour volume very good.
  • 5v (highest setting) – Warm vape with stronger throat hit and lots of vapour but the flavour is not there for me.

As would be expected the lower settings provide a cooler vape with limited flavour, vapour and throat hit. Getting over 4v/4.2v starts to give off a warmer vape with a stronger throat hit and a lot more vapour. However, the flavour starts to diminish for me just a little.

Other e-liquids I have used give off a terrible burnt taste after around 4.2v but this fruit flavour was vapeable upto the max setting, this is probably also down to the aClear Dual Coil clearomiser as well though. My sweet spot was around the 3.8v-4v mark though.

Variable Wattage Setting

The wattage (power) setting for me is my ‘variable’ setting of choice when using the Aqwa Square. This setting automatically adjusts the vaults to work with any clearomiser you are using no matter what its resistance. This for me just makes things that little bit more straightforward.

The wattage function has a range from 6w to 11w and you can move up in 0.5 increments. Again I just played around with this starting at the lowest setting and worked my way up until I found my sweet spot again!

  • 6w (Lowest setting) – This gave me a cool vape with a smooth throat hit, OK flavour and very good vapour volume. Definitely a better vape than the lowest setting available on the voltage side!
  • 8w – Slightly warmer now with great vapour volume and good flavour.
  • 9.5w – Again masses of vapour, good throat hit although the flavour is suffering very slightly for me.
  • 11w (Highest setting)- A real cloud of vapour here with a stronger throat hit. Flavour is there but still trailing off a touch compared to the mid range settings.

The results when using the wattage setting, for me, are far better than when using the voltage settings.

The sweet spot for me personally was around the 8w-9w level. This I am sure will differ for everyone’s taste but that is the whole point of having the VV/VW function, to play around until you have reached that point where you are getting a great vape each and every time.

Again I didn’t get any burnt taste coming through with this e-liquid which was a pleasant surprise.

So… who is still scratching their head thinking this all sounds very complicated?! I can assure you once you have had 20 minutes of playing around with the Aqwa Square you will be flying through the settings no problem.

Supplied E-Liquid

ukecigstore.com e-liquidObviously any e-liquid can be used with this electronic cigarette but the Tropic Thunder that was supplied I thought was great.

I have tried some good fruit flavoured e-liquid recently and this at the moment is definitely up there with the best of them.

I also found this flavour worked a treat with this e cig and when used with the dual coil clearomiser could take the higher wattage and voltage settings without compromising flavour too much.

This particular flavour is part of UK E Cig Stores Royal Range and comes in at a reasonable £4.49 for 10ml and £10.49 for 30ml. I could definitely use this as an ‘all day vape’

Overall

The wattage function for me produced better results and is a touch more straightforward as it doesn’t matter what resistance your clearomiser is, put any 510 compatible vape tank on there and the Aqwa Square adjusts itself to that particular device.

I was getting masses of vapour and great flavour with the Tropic Thunder e-liquid I was using, the flavour itself I would also recommend for those liking a fruity vape!

Overall – If you skipped through everything!

For those familiar with the Innokin iTaste VV/VW then yes this is pretty much a re-branded version of that e cigarette. It is however, a fantastic product and the Aqwa Square kit with the dual coil clearomiser and e-liquid is a great bundle at a good price.

The 800 mAh battery performed well as expected giving me, a moderate vaper, a good days vaping.

The voltage and wattage functions both work well, I have been using the wattage settings almost exclusively since I started using this and along with the aClear Dual Coil clearomiser I was getting a great solid flavour from the Tropic Thunder e-liquid.

Another bonus is that this kit is also available in a ‘Mini’ version, this comes with a 650 mAh battery but no e-liquid for £29.99.

All in all the Aqwa Square Vari is a fantastic bit of kit for those looking to take the next step up from their Ego setup or even from a mini e cig setup if you don’t mind a bit of a learning curve.

Final Aqwa Square Vari Review Verdict:

Excellent: Highly Recommended By www.ecigclick.co.uk

  1. Ordered this on 31/12/14 and arrived on 5/1/15 (RM 2nd class delivery) so good delivery speed considering the dates.
So far I’m happy with it but even being only 1 day I will have to see how it goes. Not 100% on the supplied juice but I selected the ‘Sweet’ option which looks to be a lucky dip on what flavour you get, I got blueberry. I have ordered more juice to try from Quinns Vape Supply as they are highly recommended by someone I know (Chris Boden) who is heavily into vaping.

On first use yesterday it had me coughing like a MoFo but the coughing has gone down dramatically throughout the day.

I love the fact there is no proprietary charging port as it uses a standard micro USB socket as this is one of my pet hates for devices as if you loose the proprietary charger your screwed. Another thing about charging I like is that you can still use it while charging the battery, this works flawlessly using a samsung phone charger with an output of 700ma.

User manual was unclear (to me) on how to change the current setting but found it out with this page.
Somehow managed to tilt the tank slightly off centre while in my overalls top pocket (I’m a mechanic) but this was easily fixed by straightening . The buttons flap about a little bit but this doesn’t bother me as this (in my opinion) is an entry level product in its tier in the eCig world. So far I have had no leakages even when filled to the 1.6ml mark but I think this is down to the fact I have been very diligent in making sure the eCig is kept with the mouthpiece pointing up at all times.

Vapour production is ok compared to what I have seen before but this should get better from using a different juice base.

Throughout the day I have been getting smoking cravings but not from the lack of nicotine but I think more from not skinning up a rollie as I never get any real satisfaction from smoking straights and could smoke easily 5 in an hour without rollies.

So in a very short summary I am impressed enough to recommend to someone, battery life seems good for more than a day and never left green today, nice design but lacking a little in build quality of buttons, would reccomend.

  2. Too early to say to be fair. This one appears to be the iPhone of vaps.
My wife has adopted it and stopped smoking she was an occasional tobacco smoker but is using the vapouriser quite a bit.
It just seems to leak out of the mouthpiece and I am only putting very small amounts of liquid in. I carried it in it’s original case in my bag for a few hours and even now left at home lying it down the body gets oily. This must be easily explained as no one else has mentioned it in the reviews.

    • Hi Neil, Thanks for the review.

It might be worth taking the clearomiser apart and making the sure the atomiser coil head (part with the wicks) is screwed in tightly enough. This for me tends to be a source for leaks in other clearomisers I have tried.

If not you may need to try a new coil head. Again just make sure everything is screwed into place properly making sure no e-liquid gets into the centre tube when filling.

Let me know if you need help with anything else.

      Cheers

      Jonny

  3. I love this product, however I’m a bit disappointed that it seems “rattly” the + and – buttons aren’t particular solid-feeling and when I try to chyeck the resistance of the Aqwa cart that came with the device, it always reads “NON”.

I emailed the suppliers (UKecigstore) straight away and haven’t had a reply yet so I have left the customer service empty and put build quality to 2*’s

Good vape, nice throat hit, however the free juice that came with it is awful – I really don’t like it, so I’m mixing at the moment with VIP Triple Menthol.
