In for review is one of Innokin’s latest pod mods, the Innokin Zyon Pod Mod kit.

Innokin are an instantly recognisable brand name and really need no introduction!

One of the vape industry leaders and innovators, Innokin cleaned up six accolades in the recent Ecigclick awards.

They have also earned great reviews from us recently for products such as the Innokin Klypse Mecha, Klypse Zip and the Arcfire.

My first ever variable wattage set up was an Innokin SVD paired with an iClear 30 and I have been a fan of Innokin products for a long time now. Some of my favourites being the Zenith tank and Coolfire kit, so I’m excited to see what this has to offer!

What Can We Expect From The Innokin Zyon Pod Mod Kit?

It is another Innokin kit designed in partnership with well-known vaping personalities Phil Busardo (aka pbusardo) and Dimitrios Agrafiotis (aka VapinGreek) and is another addition to the Innokin Platform Series that focuses on providing user-friendly vaping kits.

Sadly this is not showing on the Innokin website at time of writing – hence the lack of manufacturer images – sorry about that!

You’ve got a small, cylindrical shaped pod kit sporting an intuitive OLED display and this kit has definitely been designed with ergonomics in mind.

Variable wattage is present, with the Zyon Pod Mod kit outputting 6-25 watts. The kit intelligently detects the resistance of the coil and suggests a recommended power output for it.

There is adjustable airflow to cater for Restricted Direct Lung (RDL) inhales down to tight, cigarette-style Mouth To Lung (MTL) draws. We tell you what the terms MTL and DTL mean in our Guide To Vape Styles.

Battery-wise, a 1300mAh integrated battery is found within the kit which is recharged via the USB-C port.

A bottom-filled 4.5ml capacity Zyon Pod tank comes as part of the kit. It is compatible with Innokin’s PZP range of coils, which cater to all types of draws. Resistances of 0.4ohm, 0.6ohm, 1.0ohm and 1.2ohm are available. The 0.6ohm and 1.2ohm PZP coils come with the kit.

The UK and TPD regulated version of the Zyon will of course feature a 2ml capacity tank to fit in with regulations.

Thanks go to Innokin for sending the Zyon Pod Mod kit in for review, let’s see how it performs!

Design and Build Quality

I was sent the Black and Pink Zyon pod mod kits by Innokin for review and I was really impressed with how this kit looks upon first impressions.

The small, cylindrical form factor is nice to hold in the hand and it is quite lightweight too – making it a pocket friendly little kit.

zyon mouthpiece

I’ve got to say that in hand the kit reminded me of using one of my old 18350 mechanical mods, which is really starting to show my age there!

There will be six different colour finishes available for the Zyon Pod Mod kit, alongside the Black and Pink versions that I was sent – you’ll also be able to choose from Green, Light Yellow, Light Purple and White versions.

During use, neither of the Zyon kits seemed to pick up much in the way of scratches and the finish seems to be fingerprint resistant as well. Overall, I’m pretty happy with the design and build quality of this kit!

OLED Screen / Fire Button

A small OLED screen is found on the side of the Zyon device, which keeps things simple and displays the power output and battery level clearly. It switches to a vape timer when you fire the power button – which is a large surface area located above the screen.

You simply click it in to fire!

innokin zyon screen

Below this is the USB-C charging port and I like the placement of the charging port as you can stand the kit up whilst charging rather than resting it on its side. This prevents it from rolling about which can be an issue when cylindrical shaped kits are placed on their side!

Pod Tank

The Zyon Pod tank is held in place by a magnetic connection. Once in it seems to hold pretty firm, although I have found that I have been able to inadvertently rotate the tank which can mess up the adjustable airflow setting.

zyon pod battery

Which – on that note – you may have guessed that the airflow is adjusted by rotating the pod to your desired setting!

It holds 4.5ml worth of e-liquid, with a built-in fixed drip tip and is refilled via the fill port located at the bottom of the tank. Online, I’ve seen the tank described as having an ‘Easy-View’ design which I hate to say it does not.

The tank is tinted and in conjunction with the beauty ring around the top of it (which I found a bit loose and pointless and just ended up removing), the e-liquid capacity can be quite difficult to see especially in low light conditions.

Removing the ring actually makes visibility of the tank capacity quite a bit better.

Quick Start Guide

It’s an Innokin product, so three clicks to turn on the device and three to turn it off rather than the usual five from other manufacturers!

The Zyon Pod tank comes with the 0.6ohm coil pre-installed. You can easily swap this for the 1.2ohm coil in the box simply by pulling the coil out from the base of the tank and sliding the new one in.

Don’t forget to remove the safety sticker from the base of the coil before using it – and also to fill the tank with e-liquid first (more on that below)!

There is an airflow cut out at the side of the device and by rotating the pod you can open up or close the airflow down.

zyon airflow

Having six airflow holes exposed will provide the most open and airy draw and the tightest draw can be achieved with just a single airflow hole exposed.

To Adjust the wattage click the power button twice continuously and when the power value starts to blink you click the power button until you have selected your desired power output.

When happy with your selection, wait for two seconds to exit the power setting.

Safety protections are built into the device, so you have No Load / High Resistance protection, Short Circuit protection, Auto-Shut Off Protection and Overheating Protection.

How To Fill The Innokin Zyon Pod

A bottom filling system is present here, so to fill up the tank you remove it from the device, invert it, pull the filling tab open and insert the nozzle of your e-liquid bottle then fill.

If there’s a new coil present, leave it for five minutes before using it to allow e-liquid to properly saturate the cotton in the coil.

I’d highly recommend priming the coil with a few drops of e-liquid before use and I’ll go into why under the ‘How does the Innokin Zyon Pod Mod Kit perform’ section below.

Charging The Zyon Device

A USB-C charging port is found underneath the screen, plug in the included charging cable and connect it up to power source to recharge the battery.

usb charge port

Don’t expect it to charge too quickly though, as it charges at around 0.75A. Which is a bit of a shame when other manufacturers are putting out pod devices that charge super-fast in the 2-2.5A region!

How Does The Innokin Zyon Pod Mod Kit perform?

Within the kit, you get the 0.6ohm PZP coil as well as the 1.2ohm PZP coil and the PZP coil range also offers 0.4ohm and 1.0ohm options as well.

A side note – I did try the 0.4ohm PZP coil with this kit, as I was sent a box of them to go with my upcoming Innokin Kroma-Nova kit review, but the vape was a little too on the weak side with this coil.

innokin zyon pod vapesNot too surprising when this coil is designed for use in the 30-40W range and the Zyon has a max output of 25W!

Definitely a coil more suited to the Kroma-Nova kit, which I shall be reviewing soon…

Prime The Coil

So when I first filled up the Zyon Pod tank with the 0.6ohm PZP coil, I didn’t prime the coil with a few drops of e-liquid beforehand, but simply filled the tank up and left it for at least ten minutes.

Bad move on my part as I was greeted with a pretty nasty dried cotton like taste to my e-liquid for quite a few puffs. It did take a fair while to break in the coil!

I tried the same e-liquid in the other Nova kit that I was sent, but this time I primed the coil with three drops of e-liquid, filled the tank up and left it to sit for ten minutes. And alas, no nasty taste from the off.

So, lesson learned, prime the coil first!

Flavour

Anyway, once the 0.6ohm coil got going it delivered some really good flavour, with my sweet spot being 22-23 watts and the airflow fully open. I got a loose mouth to lung hit that was packed with flavour and a smooth vape to boot.

zyon top view

Next up was the 1.2ohm coil, which is perfect for mouth to lung vaping. This is recommended for use in the 10-13W range. Which I won’t argue with after testing a few different wattages out. I found my airflow sweet spot to be just below half open.

Again, some very good flavour to be found here.

I also gave the 1.0ohm PZP coil a go in this kit, as I was sent a box of these by Innokin.

innokin zyon side viewThere’s not a whole lot of difference between this and the 1.2ohm coil I found. They perform pretty much the same, with the only difference being that the 1.0ohm coil is recommended for use in the 9-13W range.

I didn’t get any difference in performance between the two to be fair.

With regards to the airflow, I would say that this device is tailored more to mouth to lung vaping.

Restricted direct lung hits are my preference, but even with the airflow fully open, the 0.6ohm coil in use and the wattage cranked up, the vape felt just a touch on the tight side for a restricted lung hit.

It does deliver a great mouth to lung vape and a very tight one at that with the airflow closed right down!

On another note, this isn’t a kit that is designed for blowing huge anti-social clouds of vapour, the vapour production is pretty modest with the Zyon kit.

Battery Life

Finally I couldn’t fault the battery life, I got a whole days’ worth of vaping with a full charge and the 0.6ohm coil at 22-23W, which extended into a day and a half when I used this kit with the 1.0 and 1.2ohm coils!

Pros

  • Lovely form factor, great device in the hand
  • Good flavour, you can really taste the flavour notes in your e-liquids
  • Good lifespan from the PZP coils which seem to go on and on!
  • Plug and play coil system makes it easy to swap coils out
  • All-day battery life
  • Adjustable wattage and airflow allows for different vaping options
  • Solid build quality
  • Good selection of colour options
  • Large 4.5ml tank capacity

Cons

  • Initial bad taste from one of the 0.6ohm coils – highly recommend priming it first!
  • Quite a lot of condensation build up around the base of the tank
  • Difficult to see how much e-liquid is left in the tank
  • Can’t swap coils without losing any e-liquid in the tank
  • Easy to accidentally change the airflow setting
  • Ring on top of the tank seems a bit pointless and was quite loose on my sample
  • Tight restricted direct lung hit even with airflow fully open
  • Not the quickest device to charge.

Final Verdict

It’s an Innokin device and over the many years of using Innokin products I have come to expect great performance from their kits. And this is no different – but it isn’t without its small faults.

Most of which won’t bother your everyday vaper, but might irk the seasoned vaping enthusiast.

There’s nothing major in terms of faults, just small aspects that I have picked up during testing that Innokin could improve upon to produce an unparalleled pod kit. It’s almost there!

Aside from that, this genuinely is a really good pod system that will make a great option for people transitioning from disposables over to a pod system (especially with the impeding disposable ban in the UK). Or those switching from cigarettes to a vaping kit or even for an experienced vaper looking for an uncomplicated kit that could be a back-up to their main device of choice.

I was impressed with the flavour from this pod kit! The PZP coils offering a smooth and tasty vape in conjunction with the Zyon Pod tank. Plus I was happy that the battery would see me through a whole days’ worth of vaping.

Vaping full time since 2012, started on cigalikes for a while then curiosity got the better of me and I moved onto an vape pens, a month or two later I was seeing people walking around with these interesting shiny tubes and I thought 'I gotta get one of those'. Before I knew it a trip down to my local B&M got me my first VW mod, an Innokin SVD, paired with an iClear 30, and I was hooked. Soon after that I was jumping to VW mods both box and tube shaped, before I then made the jump to rebuilding and thus sub ohming, with my first RDA and mech mod. These days I've come back to convenience and mainly use pods, disposables and the VOOPOO Drag H40. Most importantly I am still loving vaping!
