Design and Build Quality

The SMOK Vape Pen 22 comes with a 1650 mAh battery, and at the top of the battery is a tank base to install your 0.3ohm coil into.

Before using, you’ll need to screw in one of the two 0.3ohm coil heads, pop the glass tank section on, fill with juice then screw the top cap on.

When you need to refill, unscrew the top cap and fill with ejuice. Got to love top-fill vape tanks!topfill vape pen 22

When you fill for the first time, you’ll need to let the tank stand for a couple of minutes to allow juice to absorb into the coil head.

Unlike a lot of other vape pen style devices, the SMOK Vape Pen 22 can be fully disassembled to clean, and it’s easy to put back together again.smoktech vape pen 22 parts

The build quality of the device is very good and it feels really well made.

Looking at the battery, you’ll notice there are two large airflow slots, which are fixed, a USB charging slot (you can vape whilst the battery charges), and there is a battery venting hole at the bottom.

The power button is a good size, responsive and offers an LED indicator as well.smok vape pen 22 kit

Measuring in at 22mm width, with a 110mm height and weighing over 90g, the SMOK Vape Pen 22 is a nice and lightweight device to hold in your hand, and the one button operation makes it really simple to use.

It’s an easy device that can be carried around in your pocket or bag.

How Does The SMOK Vape Pen 22 Perform?

At present, the Vape Pen 22 comes with two 0.3ohm coils and these are the only ones
that are available right now.

This offers a pretty powerful vape that I feel is going to be suited to those with more experience rather than new vapers.smok vape pen 22 stainless

It has to be said though, I was impressed with the flavour on offer here. As vape pen kits go, this is the most flavourful I have tried yet.

The large fixed airflow provides a lot of vapour too, meaning you can blow some hefty clouds with little effort.

If you look at the coil heads themselves you will see that the wicking holes are quite large on these, and thanks to their size the coil heads wick max VG juice perfectly.

This kit does get through a lot of juice and fast though. Which seems standard with a most of the Smok vape tanks out there. TFV12 anyone?

There are safety features built in to protect you. Low resistance protection, an 8 second cut off, short circuit protection and low voltage protection are built in.vape pen 22 safety features

The 1650 mAh battery lasts pretty much a whole days vaping, and when the battery has discharged to 3.3V the LED indication will flash to indicate a charge is needed.

It does charge pretty quickly, only taking a couple of hours, and you can vape whilst the device is on charge.

What I Liked

The flavour and vapour performance on this device is excellent and all it takes is a simple one button press.

The coil heads wick pretty much any juice you can think of, so if you like using Max VG juice for even bigger clouds, you won’t have a problem using it here.

It’s a very well made little device that is easy to carry around, and as it can be disassembled easily you can clean it out to prolong lifespan.

Battery life is perfect, it’s a device you can easily pocket and carry around all day with you, plus it does recharge quickly. If you don’t have access to any other devices whilst it is charging, then you can still vape whilst it charges.

What I Didn’t Like

Although this is a design that may appeal to people making the switch from smoking to vaping, the 0.3ohm coils are going to be far too powerful for the vast majority of new starters to handle. The fixed airflow may also be too airy.

I’ve experienced some slight leaking from the airflow when top filling. It’s not a flood of juice as such, but juice has wept out of the airflow holes and got onto my hands.

The tank being fixed to the battery does limit your options of trying out different tanks on the battery.

Final Review Verdict

It’s not a kit I would recommend to someone making the switch from smoking to vaping as this kit will be a little too powerful.

The Vape Pen 22 would however, be a great buy for someone who has been vaping a little while and is looking for something that provides great flavour and big clouds with minimum fuss.

I was very surprised with how good the flavour was with this kit, and the airflow does make for some very impressive clouds.

The 1650 mAh battery means this is a device I can take out with me all day, and enjoy a great fuss free vape.

  • Easy to use

smok-vape-pen-22-reviewThe SMOK Vape Pen 22 is a top choice for vapers looking for performance in a vape pen style e cigarette. For what it is, it's hard to beat for flavour. I've really taken to the simplicity and great performance of this device.

  1. i got my vape pen 22 a while back, the 0.3 ohm coil burnt out almost immediately so I took it to a vape shop which recommended a 0.15 ohm coil and I havent had any issues since. Leaking does seem to be extremely common through the air ports the more you use it and you’ll notice a lot of other reviews state that. Aparently its common with the smok brand. The coils are on amazon for £8.08 for 5 or in vape shops for £4 each. Hope that helps!

  2. Hey, I was wondering if something is wrong with my smok vape. Whenever I try to refill my vape, I would unscrew the top but the coil would unscrew off with it and the liquid would seep under the coil and I would have to empty the whole thing. I make sure to tighten the coil as tight as I can but it keeps unscrewing with the top. Is there a way to fill up my vape without this happening?

    • Hey Serena, yeah it does seem to be an issue many have had.

I’d suggest trying the following steps when the tank is empty:

      – Remove top cap
      – Remove coil
      – Clean any excess juice from the threading no both coil and battery (where the coil sits)
      – Replace coil, finger tight
      – Then, without filling the tank, screw the top cap back on and unscrew, basically testing to see if it can be removed easily before refilling. Maybe unscrew/screw a few times to ensure the coil stays in position in the battery.

May also be worth trying just a little eliquid on the threading on top of the coil that attaches to the top cap.

It’s not ideal but if you can get this functioning correctly before filling it should make things a little easier.

  3. I have just purchased the vape pen 22. I am not best pleased with it. Everytime i try to use it, it burns the back of my throat really bad. I thought there was something wrong with the 1st coil I put in, so I changed it, only to find that this was the same. I left both coils to soak in the oil, so I don’t know what the problem is. It leaks everytime I try to use it as well. I have also tried a couple of different types of oil too. Can anyone advise please, as I don’t know what else to try.

    • Hi Lesley,

What is the OHM rating on the coil you are using?

Also what nicotine strength and what PG/VG ratio e-liquid are you using?

Could be you are using too high a nicotine strength and/or PG% for a sub ohm coil.

      Let me know!

    • I recently purchased the same vape pen and it burned my throat badly because I cannot handle the nicotene, even low, as I have smoked ultra light 100’s for awhile now. I did get relief by ordering no nicotene and a high vg content 80/20 ejuice by Mig and I must admit the flavor is incredible! I am fairly new to vaping but enjoy it. I get great clouds with this pen but I hate that there is the design flaw of leakage through the air slots. That bites since it already goes through juice quickly but I cannot carry it in my purse or anyway that it is not standing up perfectly straight. The sweeter thick juices tend to burn the coils up faster I think I read but the high VG is not as bad. When I changed the atomizer with the new coil today, it did stop the burnt taste and burning throat. It does spit some to start from thick juice on the coils but will stop after amping it to start and after 2-3 hits is better. I will see how long this coil lasts me. I hope it is longer than 2 weeks. I am looking for replacement coils…I hope I can get them from either smok or amazon? I don’t know how to change a coil and am not sure if I can buy the whole new piece in bulk maybe, otherwise this one may not be worth it.

    • The same thing happened to me when using the Vape Pen 22 for the first time. I think you should use a nicotine strenght between 0 and 3 mg. at the most. 6 mg is getting harsh, and 12 mg would be just way too much for vaping this device. I agree with the author of this article that the Vape Pen 22 is not a starter kit. The amount of vapor and the strength is too hard for a person just starting vaping. I would advice to purchase a mouth to long device, such as an Innokin T18 or T20, and then progress from that.

      • Hi Edgar, since you mentioned Innokin T18, would you say the Joyetech eGo AIO starter kit would be a better bet? I am confused between the two and I need a backup. I have the Smok Vape Pen 22 but the only issue is that I can’t use a high level of nicotine and that sucks since I want to make the switch and completely stop smoking cigarettes (I smoke about 4-6 a day RN). Right now I’m doing both. Not a newbie to vaping though, have used box mod iJoy Capo 100 for a while till it was lost.

  4. Hiya, my smok 22 has worked great until tonight, flashing button, its being charged for a while now, still flashes red, not working at all, what the heck do i do please, its sun night and no way to get it sorted, have locked and unlocked it, no luck, battery is getting charged, still flashing button, no power but it has been charged today allready, am re charging now, what can I do please before i go insane!!
    Best wishes

    • I am shocked to read so many 5 star reviews for the smok 22 all over the Internet. It has been a nightmare. Almost constantly leaks from the air holes, not just after being filled. Coil unscrews when you take the top off to fill it up no matter how tight you screw it. I contacted smok about the leaking. They said there was a mod available and said they had posted it to me. They actually just sent me a while new unit, exactly the same. I set it up very carefully, half filled the tank and left it on charge. I went back 2 hours later and found that all but about 2mm of the fluid had leaked out onto the table. I lifted it and tilted it and the remainder poured out. Smok said they’ll send me another on. I told them not to bother as I wouldn’t have another. I see all these videos etc online with advice on how to avoid the leaking, none of which have worked in my case and besides, why should you have to do all that? It shouldn’t leak in the first place. But yeah, what a great product. Yeh right. Absolute rubbish. Today I couldn’t get the top off. Sometimes it seems to get stuck on. The grips on it are barely visible. I nearly smashed it with rage but finally I got it open, filled it up and spent the next 10 minutes with fluid all over my hands. Grrr.

      • At the time David the Vape Pen 22 was pretty groundbreaking in terms of what it had to offer. Time does move on pretty quickly in the world of vaping and there are much better options out there and you are right, you shouldn’t have to be using ‘workarounds’ to fix leaking issues.. Sounds like you are having a nightmare with it.

The more uptodate devices are a lot more user friendly and using the right VG/PG juice mix, don’t tend to leak.

Hope you find something that plays ball!

  5. Hi I’m happy with my smok vape pen 22. I have found that if I fill it level with the top of the wicking holes then it’s more likely to leak through the airflow. So when I put a new coil head in I fill it to the top of the wicking holes and leave it for 10 mins to ensure the wick is soaked in juice.

I then suffer a little leakage with use for a short time because it uses juice up quickly as you’ve pointed out in your blog. Subsequent refills I just fill it with juice halfway up the wicking holes. Does that make sense.

My coils last a few weeks each. I buy them from Amazon. I do have a question. Is the Cosmic Fog brand of vape juice suitable for this device? I’ve bought milk and honey flavour. It’s 0mg and I think is either 50/50 or 70/30. I bought it from Myepack. They’re a bit annoying in that they don’t give ingredients info on their site but other than that they are a reputable site.

  6. I decided to go to a smaller vape as I am trying to cut back on how much I vape.

I use a 70/30 juice, the juice constantly leaks from the air holes and it keeps creating a burning taste, I have changed my coil and it continues to happen. I am not over using it as its after around four sucks that the burning flavour starts.

I always ensure when changing my coil it is soaked in juice for at least 10 mins, It is possibly the worst vape i have ever had.

  7. I’ve been charging my smok 22 for about 2 hours and whenever I try to turn it on I get flashing red lights on the button. What does that mean?

  8. My smok 22 has leaked from I’ve bought it, how do you stop it leaking, I cant put it in my pocket are else it leaks all over me.

  9. I bought a Smok vap pen 22.
It leaks liquid all the time from the glass barrel.
It also spits hot liquid in the mouth too. There is a lot of tasting of the oil.
I changed the filter and it didn’t work at all so I swapped it back.
The retailer suggested I return for them to see what is happening but I am loathe to as I am trying to quit smoking.
I like the amount of vapour it produces but it does go through oil quickly too.
    Any advice???

  10. I have the Smok Pen 22. I find that it leaks from the tank a lot – I was given 50/50 oil and told that was best. I am trying to quit smoking. I find that it spits a lot. I get a lot of oil in my mouth which isn’t great. Also I tried to change the coil after a few weeks and got no vape at all. Was told could be faulty coil but just went back to original coil because at least I got some vapour out of it. Not impressed. Have been advised to send back to retailer but I don’t want to risk picking up the fags! Thinking about buying a new one…

    • Hi Kjevie,

For the Vape Pen 22 we would recommend an e-liquid with a PG/VG ratio of around 70VG/30PG as it is a thicker e liquid more suited to the sub ohm coils this device uses.

Have a look at this guide on PG and VG e-liquids to get a better understanding.

Depending on how old the coil is you may need to try again with a fresh coil.

Also, just be sure the coil is firmly in place before refilling.

      • Sorry I just posted again as did not think original post worked!
Ok – re oil. I was told it needed 50/50. I have some other oils but they don’t have an indication of the viscosity/whatever ratio on the bottle but do look slightly thicker – okay to try these you reckon?

          • I have changed the oil to a different one which actually seems less viscous. It seems to have improved the spitting/taste in mouth by is still leaking; possibly more. The name is ‘Apollo’ which was the brand of an old vape I had. The flavour is classic tobacco and to be honest its a bit harsh!

The oil I was supplied with by the retailer is RV – ‘’

          • Hi Kjevie,

Classic Tobacco from Apollo is a 50PG/50VG eliquid as well. Probably the same as the Redvape one you receive that also do 50/50 tobacco flavours.

As mentioned this may be too thin for the big coils on the vape pen 22.

The vape pen 22, being a sub ohm tank is recommended with a max 6mg nicotine. The most popular is actually 3mg nicotine for a sub ohm vape. High nicotine will be pretty harsh in this tank.

  11. I overcharged my smok 22 vape pen by a couple hours with a 2amp Walla adapter and the micro usb cord it comes with, is it still safe to use?

  12. Hi, I’m using 70/30 mix and find my coilburning out within a day or two. Also leaks constantly. I’m using a light liquid (twister flavour) is this the right mix or should I change to 60/40?
Had this for nearly a year and only just started with these issues

    • Hi Lindsey,

I take it you mean a 70VG / 30PG mix? If so that *should* be just fine. I’m not sure what Twisted Flavour is?

Coil life is effected largely by the amount you vape and of course the type of e-liquid you are using. Sweeter, thicker High VG liquids can clog coils up quicker. E-liquids darker in colour are said to affect the build up of gunk on the coil.

Regarding leaking, I’ll presume this is from the airflow holes.

Before filling/refilling tighten down the coil head firmly. When unscrewing the top cap to fill the coil can sometimes come loose. Also, try not to tighten the top can too much.

Is there anything else that you have changed specifically since you started having the issues?

Let me know how you get on with the above

  13. My button on the Smok vape pen 22 keeps getting stuck, I press it to vape then release but the button does not release 🙁

  14. whenever i vape even from the first time, it’s ridiculously hot. i changed the coil twice and i don’t know why it’s so hot. does anyone have a solution??

    • The Smok Vape Pen 22 is designed for direct to lung hits. If you try to use it as a mouth-to-lung device (just as hitting on a cigarrette), the device gets hot, and sometimes it can even spit juice into your mouth. It takes practice, but you have to inhale quickly and deeply (it is hard at first, but you get used to it eventually). If you do it this way you will see that the flow of vapour is smoother, and the device will not get hot.

  15. I love the vape pen 22 for flavour but it drinks sooo much juice, I’ve also found the coil only lasts a couple of days – am I doing something wrong or can you recommend something similar for flavour but with better coil/juice life?

    • Hi Lesley,

It’s pretty standard unfortunately with these bigger coils and sub ohm vaping that they like a drink! SMOK tanks are well known for being thirsty.

As for the coil life, this will be affected by the sweeter juices as well due to build up of sugars on the coil. Juices that are darker in colour can have this effect.

I can only suggest trying clearer juices to see if this helps out and maybe juices that have a slightly lower VG ratio, 60VG/40PG for example.

Sorry I can’t be more specific there Lesley!

  16. My vape 22 pen has started leaking all the liquid .
I fill it up and leave it standing for a few minutes and all the juice pours out .
I keep tighting the coil first before filling but it still has al lthe juice leaking out from the air0holes.
My last coil was the same too.

  17. When I want to charge my vape pen 22 it will be fine it will show the red dot but in a few minutes the red dot is gone is that good or bad

  18. I keep getting red hot spitting when I take drags and leaking from airflow holes what can I do to fix this or atleast reduce it? It’s the the smok babe pen 22

    • Hey James,

What PG/VG e-liquid ratio are you using?

Take a look at this e cig tank troubleshooting guide for a more in depth explanation as to why this may be happening.

It sounds like your juice may be ‘too thin’. Higher PG% juices have less viscosity than higher VG juices so the juice can wick too quickly, quicker than you can vape. This can result in the juice going straight through the cotton and whn it does that it only has a couple of places it can go. One of which is through the bottom airflow.

What you can try though to negate the spitting:

Take a piece of tissue/kitchen paper. Roll it thin and poke this down the drip tip and into the center of the coil. This should help mop up any excess juice that is sitting on the coil. It’s this excess that can cause the spitting when you fire the device.

You may need to do this a few times but I have found when I’ve had this issue in the past that once the coil is bedded in a little it starts to act normally.

It *could* also be a dodgy coil, which can happen from time to time.

Let me know how you get on with the above James.

        • Hi Mykle,

If you make sure the coil is screwed in tight. And that the top cap isn’t screwed on too hard. If the coil unscrews just a little then juice will make it’s way through the base.

When removing the top to fill ensure the coil doesn’t unscrew with the top cap.

Before you re-fill just ensure the coil is screwed in tightly first, before filling.

  19. I need a help . Which one is better ? mini kit (40w)
2.kengertech top box mini kit (75w)
    3.kengertech subox mini kit (50w)

    • Hi Sabbir,

I would suggest Top Box Mini and then the Target Mini – Keep in mind the Topbox Mini will require a separate 18650 battery. The Target Mini has a built in battery.

        • Good stuff Sabbir, glad your happy with it!

Without sounding like I’m dodging the question, settings will differ for each user. It all depends on the coil resistance (ohms), the type of e-liquid you use, not only flavour but PG/VG mix as well.

And last but not least how YOU like to vape. Cool, warm etc.

          What I suggest:

Let your coil soak up the juice for 5 mins of so.
Then start on a low wattage and work your way up 1 Watt at a time.
When you reach a vape that is good for you that is the perfect setting.

          Extra note on use

The Kanger Topbox Mini also has the option of using temperature control. I personally use wattage 90% of the time, but if you do use the temp control function then it’s essential you use only TC compatible coils.

          TC Compatible coils include

Stainless Steel (SS) (Can Use In Both Wattage and TC Mode)
Titanium (Ti) (Do Not Use In Wattage Mode)
Nickel (Ni200) (Do Not use In Wattage mode)

Coils to use in Wattage mode

Kanthal – Think the Topbox comes with Clapton coil.
          Stainless Steel (SS)

          Hope that helps

          • Thanks for your help .
I need to know one think .
To day I started vaping on RBA with given coils . What is the mod for this RBA .

          • Hi Sabbir, if you mean the RBA for the Top Tank then you just use it with the Kanger mod you bought.

Same rules apply regarding finding the right vape for you as they do with the stock coils.

          • hi I’m struggling with my alien 220 at the minim using the baby beast tank and the t8 coil but I’m not getting good flavour and quiet a strong throat hit I’m using phycologist bunny twister juice that’s 80/20 3mg….I’ve burnt the coil from.thrying to fid a good setting I swapped to this from a smok cape pen 22 which was great but can’t get on with this new setup any tip I’m thinking of going to cape citi for a new coil and bit of advice tomorrow but any tips for today to keep me from buying cigs would be great haha cheers.

          • Hi John,

What wattage are you vaping at with the Alien? Hows the throat hit at lower wattages?

Unfortunately, once you burn the cotton in the coil it’s pretty much ruined and a new one needs to be installed.

Worth mentioning that a burnt coil can sometimes contaminate the juice as well. So keep that in mind.

Also, when first vaping with a fresh coil, after you have let the coil sit for 10 minutes to soak up the juice.

Then, be sure to start on a low wattage and work your way up gradually. Have a little patience and this should avoid any burnt coils in the future.

Also, 80/20 is quite a thick juice. So you may have to adjust your draw on the tank and make it a little shorter. Thicker juices aren’t as efficient wicking (soaking into cotton) as lower VG juices.

Basically, e-juice can’t soak into the cotton quickly enough to keep up with you as you vape.

Last but not least, some coils/tanks are simply better for flavour than others.

You may want to try the different coils on offer for the Baby Beast tank to see if that helps with flavour and wicking.

Let me know how you get on in store though John!

  20. My drip tip is fixed, still a nice bit of kit though, good taste, it’s got a good weight to it and feels good in the hand, overall im happy?

  21. Hi there . Now a days I am using a “Ijust S “(tube style) and I think I should buy a mini mod . So I chossed ” target mini ” (box mod ) is it a good choice to switch ?

  22. Thanks for the reviews! Just brought this as a first vape. Coming from the vype e cig, You are correct it is a pretty heavy hit! But am glad I took the step up. Thank you for a great review

    • Hi Dennis,

The SMOK vape pen 22 has built in protections such as short circuit protection. As long as you use the cable and follow the instruction manual and use the USB charging cable supplied to charge you will be fine.

You can plug into a PC/laptop but charging is quicker via a compatible wall adapter.

As always follow standard safety advice: Don’t charge e cig overnight, don’t leave unattended whilst charging.

  23. the tip isnt fixed to the cap its just very tightly fitted, you can in fact take this off for better cleaning ( i find a little bit of liquid builds up on the inner wall of the mouth piece after a few big blasts ) once removed youll see it stays on air tight due to two little rubber band seals
