Smok appear to have gotten some stick after the release of their latest mod [the Skyhook] but personally I had my vaping eye on this chunky little monkey.

The Smok Stick V8 kit is the latest pen-style sub ohm device from one of the most popular vape companies out there.

So is the V8 kit living up to my expectations?

stick v8 in hand

Or am I gonna stick it straight into the back of my vape cupboard?

Let’s get a closer look:

This was sent free of charge for the purpose of this review. As always our views are our own.

In the Box

The kit comes in the usual black box covered with the lava/volcanic Smok image sleeve with all the useful info on the back.

First up a quick word about the coils.

The x2 ‘stock coils’ do not have any wattage numbers engraved on them – which I thought was a bit weird.

However Smok says the Baby M2 coils are specifically designed for the V8 stick battery as it pumps out a consistent 20amps discharge – on the coils are the words Direct Output.

direct input coils

They do have Ohm readings on them and the kit I received showed 0.15ohm and 0.25ohm respectively.

Despite searching Smok’s website and trawling the net – I cannot find what wattage the V8 Stick can pump out though the consensus from reviewers is ‘around 50watts’.

When vaping when the voltage drops so will the power [wattage].

big baby beast coils

You’ll be pleased to know all the coils for the TFV8 Baby Beast are indeed compatible.

Key Features

The battery is an absolute gem coming in at 3000mAh – this will last you most of the day and power pretty much anything you care to put on it.

There’s no screen or settings to worry about – just charge – vape and go.

big baby beast tank fill

The simple swivel top-fill TFV8 Big Baby tank is quite simply awesome. You get clouds that just keep coming whilst the flavour profile is in a word superb.

It’s a 5ml tank and can be a juice guzzler – but hey what do you expect it might be a baby but it’s a bloody beast!!!

The main key features here has to be ease of use – from filling to swapping out the coil and of course just hitting that fire button and vaping – this is indeed a simple to use device.

Safety Aspects

  • 8 second shut off
  • Low resistance protection
  • Short circuit protection
  • Low voltage protection

Note: there’s the tiniest hole on the base which I assume is battery venting – can’t see any others.

Design and Build Quality

Build wise it’s everything you’d expect from Smok.

The connections are clean and buttery smooth with the huge bottom airflow ring having a pretty good resistance when turning – it won’t budge a millimetre in your pocket that’s for sure.

Design wise it is a cracker and very similar to Smok’s Brit One and Vape Pen 22.

It’s chunky and chubby and is the perfect pocket or bag mod.

I received the black version and it really does look like a top end mod.

It also comes in stainless steel and the most gorgeous Rainbow colour.

Being a bit of a ‘posey big girls blouse’ I mentioned to Jonny I’d love to get my hands on the jazzy rainbow one – mainly to impress my neighbours Andrew and Mark – lovely fellows 🙂

Reviewers can’t be choosers and it was the black one I received – and to be honest it does look bloody good.

The charge port is high on the side with a little LED ‘dot’ that lets you know when it’s fully charged and you can pass-through vape [vape whilst charging].

components

The fire button is nicely ‘clicky’ and flashes x4 times every time you puff and if it flashes 15 times it means your voltage is below 3.3v so time to charge.

That’s it really – apart from the Smok logo one side and the Stick V8 writing on the other it’s refreshingly uncluttered.

I have to say the Big Baby looks very smart on it – so do my Aspire Cleito and Atlantis Evo tanks

How Does Smok Stick V8 Perform?

Oh boy have I enjoyed reviewing this beauty!!!

The battery seems to go on forever and that tank is a just crazy!

Crazy in a good way that is lol.

You get clouds that last for ever [and ever]and the flavour is sensational.

V8 Baby M2 Core .0.25 ohm dual coil gave me a superb vape – I’d say it was cool but edging towards luke warm and the flavour was a revelation – stunning.

As soon as I vaped on the 0.15ohm things got a whole lot more fun!!!

Smoktech-Big-TFV8-Baby

This is an absolute monster – it’s a cloud chucking demon and then some – WOW!

Taste wise if I’m honest there was just the slightest and I mean slightest dip in the flavour I was expecting – just a tad but something to bare in mind.

It’s a sturdy device that I reckon could take some knocks and it fits nicely in the hand and feels just heavy enough.

Smok are marketing this as a ‘starter kit’.

I would NOT recommend this to a new vaper just beginning – if anything it’s a starter kit for those wanting to get into sub ohm vaping.

Saying that – experienced sub ohm vapers will find it a pleasure to use and it is perfect for out and about vaping.

SMOK V8 Video Review – See The Device In Action

What I Like

The majority of us like a vape device we can charge – fill and go not worrying about settings and the rest of it – and the Smok Stick V8 does just that and does it very well indeed.

The battery is a monster – forget the Duracell bunny – this bugger is that bunny on steroids and then some.

Oh my Lord the tank!

I missed out on all the TFV8 Cloud Beast family as at the time it wasn’t really something I was interested in – but how times change lol.

What I will say now that I’m more experienced [I know it doesn’t show lol] is I really must get my hands on one because if they are better than the baby then I don’t know what I’ve been missing.

Easy fill – easy coil change – crazy clouds and superb flavour – what more do we need?

What I Don’t Like

I’m a little stumped if I’m honest – there’s really not a lot to not like.

I’ve had no leakage no problems with the coils – it fires every single tank I’ve put on the battery instantly and seems to last forever.

Maybe – just maybe the tank is a little noisy on the inhale both fully open and closed off – but hey that’s really looking for issues that aren’t really there!

Final Review Verdict

I’ll keep this simple.

stick v8 contents

This is the best sub ohm pen-style device I’ve had the pleasure to review.

And NO I am not paid to say that 😉

The battery is incredible – the tank is mind-blowingly good and together they are a match made in heaven – it’s as simple as that.

Pros

  • Simple to use
  • Amazing battery power
  • Smart design
  • Awesome tank

Cons

  • Noisy??? [who cares haha]

I have simpler vape tastes these days - I never leave home without a Caliburn G, a Vaporesso Luxe 40 or Innokin EQ FLTR and a CBD vape pen or bottle of CBD drops in my rucksack...or indeed an Aspire Nautilus Prime X in my pocket... At home I'll be using various mods topped with the GeekVape Zeus X RTA or the Signature Mods Mono SQ topped with the Augvape BTFC RDA... 1. I don’t get it either, these things last about a month and that’s with lots of problems, then they die, and who knows how because they’re just cheap enough not to get fixed. It’s a sham product and there are better starter mods to go with tbh, a lot better. My second one just died, it lasted longer than the first at about 4 months, the 1st lasted less than two. It just died and would never charge again, and I believe the current did the same. They have a cheap power source connection and so before long you won’t be able to recharge it. Since the battery is sealed, that’s all she wrote folks. Yes they’re convenient and surprisingly powerful, but you’re throwing your money away, because they can’t manage that power.

  2. I am on my second one and I hated them both! I feel like I got robbed. They are terrible. From leaking to the button never working. I dont know what your reviewers are doing but this thing is a fucking abortion. Never again will I buy it. Cant make it through a day of use.

  3. Hey I was just wondering what kind of liquids I can use as I wanted to use a nicotine liquid but was unsure as to whether it’s compatible or not

    • Hi Cody,

Yes you can use nic e-liquid in the V8. I personally use 3mg with coils like these with a 70VG+ e-liquid. I’d recommend starting at 3mg and see how you get on, you can then adjust your nic ratio from there.

Check out the PG/VG guide here as it’s important you choose the right PG/VG ratio as well.

  4. Im using a tecc arc 4 with mini melo 3 tanks with a 0.5ohm coil, vape at about 30w. I use only 70%vg as i have a massive sensitivity to pg.

Im looking for something more grab and go that i can plonk the melo 3 onto. Would this be ideal?

    • Hey Vix,

The tank with the 0.5ohm coil should work OK you will need to keep in mind that the Stick V8 power output cannot be adjusted like your current setup.

      • Thanks. Im looking for more of a secondary mod, like for evenings out or when my arc is charging.
Looking at my settings, im happy with 35w/3.96v
Is this suitable or could you recommend some alternatives (pocket/stick type)

        • Hey Vix.. It may be worth looking at the Eleaf iJust S if you are looking for a tube mod. It’s available on it’s own or in kit form. The tank with the kit uses the same coils as the Melo 3 (EC 0.5). It is a little wider than the Melo 3 tank (22mm vs 25mm) but if that doesn’t bother you too much it could be an option 🙂

  5. Hi!
    I need some help.
Im a smoker, I want to quit, 2 or 3 years ago I tried e-cigs (v2 cigs, not vape) and didn’t like it, not enough vapour, didn’t like t so im back to my pall mall.
New year new try, and some friend recommend me the Smok v8, Im reading about the vape, MTL or DLI and ejuices and Im more than confuse hahahaha
Even when Im trying to quit, and the recommendations says to MTL style, I don’t think I like it… so Im thinking DLI so Smok V8 will be fine…. right??
Also, what PG/VG ratio is good on this device???
    Thank you!

    • Hey Isa,

Mouth to Lung is normally recommended for new vapers purely for the fact it’s a similar style to smoking. If you don’t like the MTL style then the SMOK Stick V8 is a good shout for sure. Just keep in mind it’s totally different to what you have used before and may take a little time to get used to if you haven’t used a direct to lung vape before.

As for e-liquid – Stick to 80VG or 70VG and you won’t go too far wrong.

  6. How long does the battery last on the v8 stick?
Also i seem to have some trouble with the base since i can’t seem unscrew it, the shopkeeper set up for me but the airflow vent just circles around the base and i can’t get it off to see if i can change the coil.

  7. For everyone who’s having leaking issues.
The smok coils are bad for it. The best fix I’ve found is to make sure the bottom end of the coil is pushed in tight. If the black O-ring isn’t tight against the coil, it will leak. Just grab the tab on the bottom of the coil and push in towards the chimney. Also, once installed and ready to fill, before filling with juice, close the vent and give a couple of strong sucks. Lastly, after filling, invert the unit and then open the vent. This seems to solve most leaking coil issues for me. Happy Vaping.

  8. I have a Smok V8 Baby, and I’m not a huge fan of the tank. Like others have said, the coils go fast, usually less than a week. I have a Tobecco Mini Super Tank from a previous unit. Will it mess up the battery (or be dangerous) to switch out the tanks?

  9. Hi there , i just received my smoke stick v8 but the EU edition with the big baby beast tpd tank ..also i ordered 10 m2 0.15 ohm coils..now what I’m thinking about is, there is a an adapter delivered with the stick to fit the baby coils into the tank.but is it still safe ? generally i didn’t understand why the battery can handle a 0.15 ohm resistance as the amps just go up up to 20..is it now unsafe with the tpd edition or is it , that they just changed the tank and these fat coils to be in the eu guidelines.. ? I’m a bit confused if i should put the m2 0.15 into the tank now.. i mean its still that they made for it..someone has experience?

    kind regards

    carsten

    • No not at all it is definitely a direct to lung tank 🙂 – if you’re into MTL vaping I’d definitely look at another set-up such as the Halo Tank Kit 02 or the Innokin EZ Watt Starter Kit 🙂

      • I decided to try the V8 not realising it was a DTL but thought I might as well try it. Love the look of my 7 colour rainbow V8, shame they don’t do a MTL version. Thanks Neil for the solid suggestions!

  10. Oh yeh ,be careful if you go shopping for the Smok V8.

A lot of the models on sale are 2000mah batteries.

I thought my local shop had diddled me but the cheaper ones i saw online are actually the 2000mAH versions.

  11. Amazing device ,wish the coils were cheaper though.

Being a bit of a chain vaper means i tear through coils pretty quick.

I’ve also just bought the Innokin MVP 4 ,anyone know the best wattage to vape the baby beast 0.15 coils ?
It doesn’t have the same kick as the Smok V8 battery so i think i have it on too low a setting .

    • Hey Chris,

There isn’t really a ‘One wattage suits all’ setting. Best thing to do is just work your way up the wattage a little at a time until you find the best setting for you.

You may find different e-liquids are suited to different wattage settings.

  12. I just got two yesterday. One for both of us. Mine is leaking badly. Seems to be coming from the air flow system. It was standing up in console box yesterday. I got it out to vape and it got all over my hands. Boyfriends seem to leak a little, not nearly like mine. HELP

    • Hey Sandra,

Have a read through the other comments, we have responded to a couple of leaking problems with possible reasons.

Any other questions after that let me know!

      Cheers

      Jonny

  13. On a road trip I busted my Kangertech glass – couldn’t find it anywhere – so bought two of the V8 Smok Sticks to try out.

One for me, one for the spousal unit. Both of us experienced the same thing with this. If your right handed and have no use for your left – keep it in your left hand – upright – between thumb and index finger or it will leak all over hell from the top.. Vice versa Left handers.

Make sure the button is ALWAYS protected between your thumb and index finger. The button is VERY touchy – and NOT RECESSED like Kangertechs – so if you put it in your jeans pocket you’ll be busy when you suddenly have the burning sensation on your leg – realise your mistake as you realise you have this huge wet spot on your jeans as well – again from it leaking all over hell out the bottom air inlets and the button pressed constantly. If you Ladies, or man-bun men, put it in your purse, you’ll find the same when you reach in for something.

The unit WILL BE almost too hot to touch. Be careful holding it while driving – you will inadvertently set it off pushing the button against the steering wheel. Only between thumb and index finger – upright. DO NOT BE FOOLED by the huge tank size!

If you fill this thing over the coil/outlet tube meeting it will – leak all over hell out the air intake. Always be prepared to carry a handful of paper towels. You will need them. Again – two units – exact same results. Yes, everything was tight. Very tight.

I tightened mine so much that to change the coil I had to use pliers initially to get it loose. Positive: This thing has superior flavor and plenty of power!!!!!! It is great if you leave it half full, upright on your kitchen table. We have new Kangertech glass.

  14. Stock preinstalled M2-0,15 Ohm coil lasts for about 15 full tank fill or about 4 days in term of time. On last fill coil degraded rapidly – very quickly (about 5 puffs – no dry hits) taste become clearly burnt. On other coils (OBS ACE, Joyetech Ultimo) I managed to restore them in some way by pouring them into water for several days and chaning water everyday after first signs of wear/burn. I’m not sure that it will be possible for M2.

BTW I’m a bit disappointed with battery perfomance (preinstalled M2-0,15 Ohm). Full charge only lasts for 2 fully filled tanks and about 1/5 – specially made tests. So let’s say – about 10-12 ml of liquid per charge.

However I’m really very pleased with taste on stock M2-0,15 coil! I think – it’s the best tank I ever tried. Now I’m checking setup with X4 coil head – ordere specially for Smok V8 kit to try. Tastes ok but fills a little bit harsh after M2. Preinstalled coil vape was much smoothier and tender – if I may say so. I’m not a cloudchasing fun but I can say that vape amount on stock M2 was also bigger.

As a major minus I can say that it is virtually impossible to disband tank without vasting filled liqued in it (i.e. for changing burnt coil in mid-process). I tried several times to carefully unscrew tank with liquid – but with no success. Even trying to disband tank requires that you have about 1/2 tank filled maximum – there is no place to “safeguard” liquid. On full tank it will surely “run away” through shaft or through coil. Also it is impossible to drain tank via filling hole – liquid just won’t to come out by itself.

  15. I hate that the coils seems to burn up in a day or two.. It seems unfair to have to change coils so often .. I use Lost Art liquids and someone said it might be due to sweeteners used.. idk.

  16. The instructions have next to no info on the air vent, what am I meant to do with it? Fully open? Fully closed? Closed when not in use?

    Thanks

    • It’s up to you, it just controls the airflow. You don’t have to keep it closed when not being used, but it would keep dust and lint out of the tank if it’s in your pocket or something.

  17. I have has many mods, boxes, tube style, and mechanical. The V8 stick is amazing. Its simple because there is no screen and it has no flaws imo. I use my Troll V2 RDA on it with a .3 ohm build and it chucks clouds incredibly. Vapes for a day or even TWO if I dont chain vape. I find this incredible seeing most two battery mods with 3000 mah batteries die in the same amount of time. This V8 stick really works wonders. PS, check out my vaping YouTube channel if you don’t mind @UC Vapers. Thanks!

  18. I’ve had mine a little over a week and it’s been leaking ejuice out ot the adjustable air flow holes. I called the place where I bought it and they said when the coil gets soaked with ejuice it will leak because it has nowhere else to go. They told me to change the coil. I’ve tried 2 different coils and it still leaks.

  19. I have the SMOK stick V8 3000mah battery. Bought this at my local vape shop brand new. Charged it for the first time no problem, the second time I charged it (mind you I’ve used it for quite a bit before the second charge, a full day give or take off and on) it seems to be a lot hotter than it was my first charge.

The output on my charger is 0.5 v – 1.0 a. I feel naive for asking considering there is power running through it so a bit of heat may be expected.

It’s gotten fairly hot though. I would like to avoid messing up my battery.

    • Hi Heather,

The output of your adaptor/charger sounds fine. Is the battery still hot when you are actually vaping or just charging?

If it’s just warm and not hot to touch then it should be OK.

But.. It may be worth touching base with support@smoktech.com to see what they have to say Heather.

  20. Hey guys I have the smok v8 pen in rainbow it’s such an amazing e cig only got it yesterday and I’m in love but the coils are hard to find.

  21. Can I use any coil from the big baby beast family on this device? or do I have to stick with one of the two stocks? I’m asking because the rest of the big baby beast coils don’t say “Direct output” on them”

  22. My battery wont charge! I’ve got a brand new coil in there and that doesn’t help. When I press the button it blinks 4 times and that’s it. I can’t take a hit and when I plug it in, it won’t charge! I’ve used multiple chargers, so that’s not the problem! HELP! I’ve only had this vape for 3 weeks!

    • Hi Angela,

Is there a certain colour the light flashes?

This sounds like it could be a short. This is usually caused by the following:

      – Faulty coil (this can happen sometimes unfortunately) – Try a new coil to see if this is the casuse.
      – Debris/ejuice/dirt on the connections – Try cleaning the threaded connection on the battery and the thread on the tank. Can use a dry Q tip or kitchen towel for this.

Try the above Angela and let us know how you get on. It may also be worth shooting over an email over to support@smoktech.com in the meantime as well.

    • I don’t know if you resolved this but mine straight out of the box was doing the thing. If the tank is screwed on to tight it doesn’t work. I keep mine just screwed on. Gently turn till it stops then I unscrew it just a little bit. Hope that helps and makes sense.

  23. I refer my learned gentleman to the comment I made on Feb 17th where after some thought I mention the longevity of the coils.

    Cheers.

  24. I’m finding I bought my v8 stick yesterday and put some 70 30 juice fanta menthol in and after 30 puffs or so I found that the coil has started to taste burning and I don’t know why ? Any recommend what’s best juice to use for this device as I also have a smok alien with a coelito 120 tank that runs a dream thanks

    • Hi Lee,

Are you vaping quite a bit when this happens (chain vaping)?

Different e-liquids can effect different coils in various ways. It sounds like the juice may have something in that is building up gunk on your coils or it may be too thick and not wicking quick enough to keep up with your vaping. The latter shouldn’t really be an issue with these coils though.

Without being too elusive there isn’t really any best juice to use with the V8 or any sub ohm tank. The PG/VG mix you have should be fine so can only think it’s what they have used for flavouring.

I personally like Dinner Lady Lemon Tart and Bake Sale Purple Wedding Cake. Both of which have worked well in a number of tanks.

Or.. You may just have a dodgy coil, which can happen.

Sorry I couldn’t be more help Lee!

  25. I have been the proud owner of a Smok Stick for a week and can find no fault with it. It vapes my other Baby Beast tanks just as good with the standard coils.
I think what I love most is the fact that it is not so bulky as other mods with similar vaping power, the only thing I don’t like is the fact that the design (being a closed battery) does not allow for having a charged battery on standby for quick changing.
I have been looking online to buy the mod only so that I can power my other baby beast tanks, but so far I can see only kits for sale. If you know where I can find mod only, please let me know.

    • Good to hear it’s working well for you Jaco!

I’ve never seen these batteries available separately. I’m 99% sure from what I’ve seen (as you have) that you can’t buy them on their own.

You can never have enough TFV8 tank though hey 🙂

  26. I just bought my first major league ecig the Smok Stick v8 after using a starter ecig the Curve 2 for a year. I tell you what – What a device. So simple, easy to use and what a cloud of smoke you can produce. I highly recommend this device.

  27. I’m not huge on vaping but my boyfriend got me this about a month ago and I gotta say I really do love it! My only complaint is I can’t ever close the top after I fill up my tank. I have no problem sliding it open but I can’t for the life of me close it. Does anyone else have this problem?

    • Hey Jen, good to hear your kind of getting on with it 🙂

Have you tried pushing down a little and closing at the same time? I know it sounds simple but I seem to remember on one of the first tanks with this type of top mechanism that worked for me.

Let me know how your getting on!

    • I’m not sure which type you have but there is actually a white plastic piece that sometimes comes up and if you just push it back down into the tank sometimes that helps. Otherwise, the lid of the tank has a lip that you may have to push down and turn on to connect to the bottom.

  28. Wattage.
The wattage @ 3.7 volts with the .25 ohm coil is 54.8w
And with the fitted .15 ohm coil is wait for it…

    A staggering 91.3watts

    • and at 91.3w, 3.7v and 0.15ohms you will be pulling 24.67Amps from the battery that is stated on smoks website to be rated for 20 Amps.

This is the part that worries me about this device, I’m not sure how “unregulated” it is, If, for instance you use that 0.15ohm coil at full charge (4.2v) that would be hitting at 117.6w and 28A assuming 100% efficiency and no power regulation….

I want to take the plunge on this, but that’s just SCARY. There must be some hard limitation built in but without the facts from the manufacturer I don’t know whether that coil is truly safe to use for a chain vaper like myself. the 0.25ohm coil should be completely fine though, maybe I could just rock that one for a little under 17A @ 4.2v

  29. Great review. with regards to smok coils my vape 22 only lasted a few days. What other coils could you recomened apart from building my own? Thanks

  30. I managed a week on both coils – switching between both daily – whilst I did my review. To be honest I did put that down to the fact it was the only device I was using – and I was testing both coils with a gloopy 80/20 e-liquid. However now I come to think about it using the stock coils for half a day each for just a week before they need changing DOES seem a little annoying.
I’ve just tried both stock coils again and whilst there’s no burning the taste is pretty flat.
I believe the baby tank coils fit the big baby so I shall be investing in some of those as like you I love the device.
I have noticed a few stock coils [from other companies] can be a little shall we say ‘dodgy’ – hopefully your new coils will help ‘cos this is a great piece of kit 😉

  31. I have had this mod/device for about 2 weeks and love it, HOWEVER, both m2 coils lasted about 3 days. For each day I vaped about 1.5 tanks worth of juice a day which is nothing. I barely use it through the day and get some nasty burned tasting hits. I wonder if those coils are just duds. I purchased a normal x4 coil and will test that shortly to see if it has the same issue. No leaking whatsoever. Other than the 2 coils that came in the box kick ass mod/device.

    • Yeah 3 days and 4.4 ml of juice total does seem a little on the short side for coil lifespan.

It has been known (although not experienced it with SMOK) for stock coils that come with the kit to be an issue so *could* be duds.

let us know how you get on with the other coils, be interesting to hear!

    • No they’re not, it burns coils badly, and that gets expensive. The vape is not worth it, even for how cheap they are. They’re basically disposable, but since they ruin your coils and quickly break, not a sound investment.
