The very first thing the company says about the Vaporesso Gen S Kit is “Power isn’t Just For The Pros“.

Well that’s me excited straight away, as a flavour and cloud chaser, I often say “I don’t mind as long as it’s got power!“.

vaporesso gen s kit with the nrgs tank

Unfortunately, the reality is, power alone doesn’t make a device great, in other words “It’s not what you’ve got, it’s what you can do with it!

We shouldn’t be concerned though, Vaporesso has a great track record and if loved by any, especially with the rise of the GT coils.

Created in 2015, Vaporesso claim they “are beyond the ordinary” and I have to say from previous experience, Vaporesso mods don’t feel ordinary, they feel better.

I’ve only ever reviewed the Target, Gen Nano and the Luxe PM40. All of those were great but out of the 3 the Vaporesso Gen Nano was my favourite.

vaporesso gen family

The Vaporesso Gen range is getting quite big, in both size and popularity, the range currently consists of the Gen, Gen Nano, Gen X and Gen S.

Lets take a closer look at the Vaporesso Gen S.

What Can We Expect From The Vaporesso Gen S Kit?

The Vaporesso Gen S has the signature “Gen look” and feel about it, which is a great thing!

Thanks to the Advanced AXON Chip, the Gen provides the following modes:

  • Pulse Mode (27% extra flavor & cloud satisfaction)
  • Power ECO (Longer battery endurance)
  • Smart TC (Accurate temperature control)
  • DIY (Vape with manual setting)

The Kit includes the new NRG-S Tank, which is capable of holding up to an astonishing 8ml of e-liquid.

According to Vaporesso, the GT Mesh coils included in the kit use the upgraded Mesh technology giving an “Unprecedented leap in flavour“.

The kit takes 2 x 18650 batteries, fires up to 220w and can handle a resistance range of 0.03 – 5ohms.

Design & Build Quality

The Vaporesso Gen S kit is available in 12 different colours – personally I think they all look pretty awesome – I received the Lime Green Kit.

The Vaporesso Gen S Mod

The Vaporesso Gen S is one of those devices that feels bigger than it is, and I’ve decided it’s because it’s thinner.

My day to day device is the GeekVape Aegis and in comparison, although the Gen S mod is 3.5mm taller it is 2 mm smaller in width and 2mm thinner.

Vaporesso Gen S mod

So despite how it feels, it’s not actually bigger, at least not in a notable way.

It’s incredibly lightweight, weighing in at 110g without batteries.

Truth be told, the mod feels very “samey” to the Gen range, which isn’t a bad thing.

The side panels of the mod are curved out to give a more welcoming feel in the hand, it has that rubber coating which feels great but more importantly makes it scratch and finger print resistant (and obviously it looks awesome)!

It’s also nice to see a side battery panel door, rather than a bottom door that many mods have these days.

Vaporesso Gen S – NRG-S Tank

The Vaporesso NRG-S tank measures at 52 x 30mm which is a fair size for a tank.

I was quite surprised at how small the coils are, but small coils seems to be all the range these days, we’ll look at them a bit closer and talk about how they perform later on.

Vaporesso Gen S Kit nrg-s tank

The NRG-S tank has a push out top fill system which is slightly different. Instead of pushing directly back and forth like tanks often do, it swings slightly to the side.

The thing I really like about the that system is, it dissembles. By twisting the top cap anti-clockwise you can remove it, which enables you to clean it properly and even change the silicone seal if needs be.

Vaporesso Gen S Kit nrg-s tank disassembly

As you would expect the tank does not have the rubber coating, that the mod has.

Interestingly, Vaporesso has gone back to the traditional coil design, by that I mean the coils screw in from the bottom of the tank rather than just push in and pull out.

The Vaporesso NRG-S Tank – Airflow

The NRG-S tank has a fair airflow, it doesn’t quite allow a restriction free airflow but it’s very loose.

I like plenty of airflow and I think it’s fine.

Vaporesso Gen S Kit nrg-s tank airflow

Of course the NRG-S has adjustable airflow. The airflow control ring is limited to a quarter turn which allows the airflow to go from fully open to fully closed.

While the airflow is fully closed it is too tight to allow Direct To Lung, but it isn’t fully airtight, so it would allow a quite loose MTL draw.

Vaporesso Gen S Screen

The Gen S has a 0.91″ OLED screen and it’s as simple as it needs to be.

I should add, although the screen doens’t show too well on camera, it is easy to see in person.

Vaporesso Gen S Kit mod screen

In the top left, is the battery indicator which displays the percentage of the batteries overall.

Below that is the current resistance reading and then is the puff timer, which shows the time to 2 decimal places, for example “1.87s”.

In big writing in the middle is the current power setting, with the power setting on the right side.

I know it isn’t anything sparkly and magical, but sometimes less it more.

Vaporesso Gen S Buttons

Oh, I do love a mod that has a third button, and luckily the Gen S has just that.

The main Fire button is placed at the top of the mod where it should be, it has that gold paint, that I had a bit of trouble with on the Vaporesso Gen Nano Review, but so far it’s going strong on the Gen S.

Vaporesso Gen S Kit Mod 510 connection buttons

Below the screen is 3 more buttons. The top one is the ‘up’ button, the bottom one is the ‘down’ button and the middle one is the ‘mode’/’select’ button – we’ll get onto the mod operations shortly.

The Fire button is painted plastic, while the other 3 buttons are plastic with the rubber coating.

They all rattle very slightly, and I say very slightly because it isn’t a loud rattle that happens a lot, in fact if I wasn’t reviewing it, I probably wouldn’t have noticed it.

Vaporesso Gen S Battery Panel

The Vaporesso Gen S has a full side panel as a battery door. It seems strange to have a favourite type of battery, I mean of all features!

But magnetized panels are by far the most durable type of battery door.

Vaporesso Gen S Kit Mod battery pack

Vaporesso has got it spot on, it fits perfectly to the mod, and it even seems to fit perfectly if you leave the ribbon hanging out.

The panel sticks on with 2 long magnets (11.5 x 4mm).

Vaporesso also included some useful safety reminders on the panel, in regards to battery wraps, and battery standards.

Thanks to the ledge on the bottom of the mod, it’s fairly easy to get off, even for those of us who are notorious nail biters, like me.

Vaporesso Gen S 510 connection

There isn’t much to say about the 510 connection, it’s 17mm in diameter, screw-less and placed dead center on the top of the mod.

Vaporesso Gen S Kit Mod 510 connection

It is also raised by about half a mm to protect the top of the mod.

Vaporesso Gen S Features & Modes

Let’s take a closer look at the features and what they’re supposed to do.

  • PUL / Pulse mode: is the default mode and it ‘continuously boosts flavour with large cloud” – Provides a constant voltage output “delivering optimal flavour production, nicotine satisfaction and perfect temperature”.
  • Eco / Power Eco Mode: preserves battery life. When the battery level gets below 40% and is unable to produce the set wattage, the mod will automatically provide an option to enter Power Eco Mode for increasing endurance. (automatic switching can be enabled disabled via the system settings).
  • STC / Smart Temperature Control Mode: “When the temperature heating wire (SS/Ti/Ni) is detected, the device will provide an option to enter the STC mode automatically”.
  • DIY Mode: You can choose traditional VW (H, N, S), VV, VT, CCW, Bypass or Super Player modes. “When the coil resistance is extremely low, the device will provide an option to enter SP (Super Player) Mode automatically.
  • SET System Settings: puff counter, brightness, flip screen, default and version.

How Does The Vaporesso Gen S Kit Perform?

GT Meshed 0.18ohm coil

The Vaporesso GT Meshed Coil is recommended to be used at 50-85W with a “best” recommendation at 65-80W.

I’m using it with “Untold Chapter 1: It has begun” which is a Pineapple and coconut e-liquid mixed at 70VG/30PG, I’ve been using it with zero nicotine.

Vaporesso GT MESHED0 coil 0.15ohh

As usual we’ll start way down low, at 40W with the airflow turned down you get a little cloud but no flavour. However if you open the airflow up fully the flavour comes through very weak. 45W ups the cloud and the flavour a bit but we’re still massively under powered.

50W is the bottom of the recommended range and although you get a small cloud and a prominent but weak flavour I still think it’s massively under powered.

Having said that I’m sure there is a few people that would like this setting.

67.5W is half way through the recommended range and with the airflow turned down you get absolutely no flavour, it is horrible, but there is a nice little cloud. With the airflow fully open the NRG-S tank comes alive! I still don’t think it’s enough power, the cloud feels abit empty but the flavour is glorious. The soft mix of Coconut and pineapple hug the back of the mouth and throat.

To the top! At 85W with the airflow fully open we are in the clouds. We get a thick cloud, although, as a cloud chaser, I would like the cloud to be thicker however the flavour production is absolutely on point.

Seriously, do you know how some fruity drinks are just bursting with flavour? It feels like I’m drinking one of those right now.

Perfect, flooding, bursting, bliss.

Above and beyond, I did push the power upto 90W and it was great, a little bit better than 85W, but after 5-6 consecutive puffs, it develops a subtle burning taste.

GT4 Meshed 0.15ohm Coil

The Vaporesso GT4 Meshed Coil is recommended to be used at 30-70W with a “best” recommendation at 45-60W.

I’m using it with “Untold Chapter 1: It has begun” which I a Pineapple and coconut e-liquid mixed at 70VG/30PG, I’ve been using it with zero nicotine.

 GT4 coil 0.18ohh

Way down at 25W we don’t get much, a very small hit of flavour and a very small vapour production.

At the minimum recommended wattage (30W) both the flavour and the vapour improve a little bit but not by a great deal, however with the airflow turned down you get an okay amount of vapour with a little flavour.

Up to the middle, 50W starts to pull that puffy stuff! It’s not great though, the flavour doesn’t seem very prominent but there is a taste of something… I’m not sure what though, burnt plastic maybe? We get a nice medium sized cloud though.

Up top, at 70W I decided this must be a ‘duff‘ coil, the cloud production is pretty good but the flavour just isn’t what it’s supposed to be.

The reason I think the coil is ‘duff‘ is because before using it, I did notice that the top of the coil was discoloured, as seen in the picture.

nrg-s coil

That’s the only GT4 coil I have, so I can’t say for certain, however I’m going to stop this write up here. T

he cloud production is good, although it isn’t super thick, and there flavour is there, it just seems tainted.

Vaporesso Gen S Charging & Battery

The Vaporesso Gen S has a 2.5A charge rating which is abit of a waste for me because I don’t have a plug that goes above 2A, but 2A is a fair speed.

If you’re using 2x 2500mAh batteries they should charge in 2.5 hours when using a 2A plug or 2 hours if you’re using 2.5A. If you’re using 2 x 3000mAh batteries it will take 3 hours with 2A or just under 2.5 hours with 2.5A.

 Mod Charger

However as always I would recommend using an external charger, because they look after your batteries better, as a rule of thumb with all mods, especially dual/triple battery mods.

Much love to Vaporesso for the extra love and attention they give their charging cables. See the picture to see what I mean, it has a mesh outer layer, it’s built to last and feels like an extra rather than just something the manufacture has to chuck in.

Leaking

This is not a pod and it doesn’t use push pull coils, which means I can out right say I didn’t notice any leaking of any kind while using the kit.

Pros

  • Capable of great flavour
  • Looks Great
  • Plenty of Features / Modes
  • 3rd button for easy use
  • Powers upto 220W

Cons

  • Awkward size/shape
  • Vapour isn’t the thickest

Final Review Verdict

What’s not to like about it?

Okay, the first time you hold the mod, it feels a bit big, but I got used to that pretty quick.

All in all it is a light kit, that good feels, looks good and does what it’s supposed to.

I’ve always been a fan of that fine rubber coating, it just gives the kit such a premium feel.

It was hard to writing the Pro’s and Con’s because as I write this I genuinely can’t find of anything I particularly dislike about it.

If there is anything I was disappointed about, I didn’t really feel satisfied with the vapour production, although the flavour was on point, at it height, I really didn’t think the vapour thickness was fullfilling enough for me, as a cloud chaser.

I’m going to have to mark down the GT4 coil, but I think that was just a one off – there aren’t many people that have a bad thing to say about Vaporesso coils.

Towards the end of the review is when I start thinking about who a device would be good for, and in this case, I think it would be optimal for those Mouth To Lung vapours that are looking for their first Direct To Lung kit.

For me… I just find it hard to place, there isn’t anything wrong with it, but I’m struggling to see what’s new, difference or special about it.

So are you using the Vaporesso Gen S kit or likely to buy it?
