Today I’ve got my sausage fingers on the new Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX pod kit.

Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX pod kit hand check imageFans of Vaporesso will no doubt already be familiar with the Luxe X and Luxe XR pod kits.

Aesthetically they’re very similar, both using an integrated 1500mAh battery. With 40W of power the coils are pushed their maximum potential.

The Luxe X is known for its sealed pods. A quick and easy way of vaping without fiddling around with coils. Some would say easier for the newer pod user.

The Luxe XR was released simultaneously, including a MTL pod and replaceable PnP GTX mesh coils. Some would say more versatility for the regular pod user.

Step forward the Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX pod kit. Now with a new RDL and DTL pod for max flavour and airflow efficiency, it uses the entire range of GTX mesh coils. What’s more, both type of existing pod are fully compatible.

We tell you what “MTL”, “DTL” and “RDL” mean in our Guide To Vape Styles!

You’ll be reading the word ‘max’ quite a lot today. That’s because the new Luxe XR MAX has arrived to really max things up.

What Can We Expect From the Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX Pod Kit?

Once again the Axon chip controls a simple user interface, handled by the fire button and a touch screen panel. It also detects the best power setting for a newly installed coil. Or of course you can vary the output yourself.

Auto coil detect of the Vaporesso Luxe XR max pod kitDon’t worry about the coils capabilities either – the Axon chip takes care of that.

There are a few differences to take note of too.

The battery capacity has been significantly increased from 1500mAh to a whopping 2800mAh. It’s an increase of 40% which should mean at least a full day of DTL (Direct To Lung) vaping with the supplied GTX coils.

luxe xr max batterySince the included coils are designed for this style of vaping the power has now doubled from 40W to a maximum of 80W which is adjustable.

Speaking of the GTX coils the COREX heating system continues to provide even heating and faster flavour delivery. Expect their life span to be increased by 50% over similar mesh coils.

luxe xr max corexThe airflow structure has had an overhaul. No more flipping pods. No – I’m not cussing.

Instead of fixed airflow we now get an adjustable airflow toggle built into the side of the battery. Expect to be fine tuning airflow restrictions this time.

luxe xr max airflowThe familiar SSS (Store, Saturate, Seal) technology ensures liquid is firmly sealed inside the pods. This will significantly reduce the chance of leakage and recycling condensate.

The Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX is fully compatible with all coils of the GTX platform.

Design and Build Quality

Battery Section / Mod

I’ve received the White version but it looks more like Cream. Not that I’m complaining – the finish feels very smooth and clean. It has a matt enamel paint effect that rocks!

It’s not the lightest pod kit I’ve had in my hand but neither is it a distraction when placed in a trouser pocket.

The fire button is comfortably placed for thumb firing. It’s slightly raised and has a nice solid click when pressed. A Silver trim around the perimeter adds a nice touch of class.

Fire button on Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX pod kitI do have concerns about the side mounted airflow toggle. It feels very loose when sliding to make adjustments.

Airflow toggle on Vaporesso Luxe XR MAXGold plated spring loaded coil contacts and four magnets reside within the battery section to hold the pod in place.

Coil contacts and magnets on the Vaporesso Luxe XR MAXThe type C USB charging port is situated on the underside. I’m not over keen for two reasons.

The first being that I don’t like charging devices horizontally. My OCD always calls for the pod to be removed for fear of drying the cotton or potential leaking issues.

..Of course that’s on me and no reflection on the manufacturer.

Secondly, the connector itself isn’t recessed enough for my personal liking. It’ll probably stand the test of time but could also be prone to accidental damage.

Type C USB charging port on Vaporesso Luxe XR MAXThe device is controlled predominantly by the fire button and the results are displayed on a 0.54in vertical OLED screen. Here’s where the tech geek in me comes out!

There are two touch sensors on the front panel which take the form of two small arrows.

Although in close proximity to one another they work surprisingly well and sensitive to the slightest of touch.

Pod section

I have to say I like what Vaporesso has done. Instead of relying on adjustable airflow alone, they’ve come up with dedicated pods to assist with user requirements.

Hence alongside the existing MTL pod found in the previous kits, we now have a RDL (Restrictive Direct Lung) and DTL (Direct To Lung) pod. You get the RDL and DTL pods only in this kit.

The differences can be seen when studying the mouthpiece of either.

Left: DL pod. Right: RDL pod.

The pods are comprised of the usual tough PCTG material and are perfectly clear for viewing E-liquid content.

They fit either way into the battery section where every last drop of e-liquid can be seen without the need for removing.

These are bottom fill pods and removing the silicone stopper reveals a humungous opening. One that will cater for any bottle nozzle as well as those with dexterity issues.

Well played, Vaporesso! Someone is clearly listening..

Quick Start Guide – Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX Pod Kit

How To Replace / Install the Coil

The GTX range of coils are PnP (Plug and Play) so there’s no messing around with threaded connections.

  • Remove the pod from the battery section
  • Using a finger nail, pull down on the edge of the coil to remove from the pod
  • Push a new coil inside the pod chamber ensuring a firm seal
Coil placement inside Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX pod
Although PnP this is the best way to install the coil

Please note: It’s best to replace a coil when E-liquid levels are at a bare minimum. It can get a bit messy otherwise!

How To Fill the Pod

  • Remove the pod from the battery section
  • Lift up the silicone stopper to reveal the fill port
  • Place the bottle nozzle through the fill port opening and gently squeeze E-liquid in
  • How to fill the pod of the Vaporesso Luxe XR MAXReplace the silicone stopper ensuring a firm seal
  • Drop the pod back into the battery section

When filling, keep in mind the minimum fill level. It’s stamped on the side of the pod.

If you’re filling the pod with a new coil let E-liquid soak into the cotton for around five minutes before vaping.

How To Operate

  • Press the fire button 5 times rapidly to turn the device on or off
  • Press the fire button 3 times to change current wattage settings. Use the up or down arrow on the touch panel then press the fire button again to set
  • Press the fire button 4 times to enter the options screen. Use the up or down arrow on the touch panel to toggle between LED on/off, reset puff counter, Smart mode on/off or to exit options. Use the fire button to activate an option.

Turn the LEDs on or off by selecting this option.

During various stages of charge the two colour LED will respond accordingly:

  • Green / Cyan 100% – 60%
  • Cyan / Blue 60% – 30%
  • Blue / Rose Red 30% -0%

The two colour LED will also alert to any safety issues the device may be experiencing.

  • Low resistance, Short circuit, No load, High resistance – LED flashes red 5 times
  • Low voltage – LED flashes red 3 times
  • High temperature – LED flashes red 4 times
  • Over time – LED flashes 5 times in current colour

How To Charge

The charging rate is specified as 2A

  • Connect the smaller end of the type C cable into the base of the battery section
  • Connect the larger end of the cable into a compatible USB outlet.
  • The screen will enter charging mode whether the device is switched on or off

How to charge the Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX pod kitOnce the battery is fully charged the screen remains illuminated by a green LED.

It takes around 70 minutes to recharge the battery.

How Does the Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX Pod Kit Perform?

I started with the DL pod, using the GTX 0.2ohm mesh coil. Digbys Black Sun was the E-liquid of choice, a 70VG/30PG juice ratio with 3mg freebase nicotine included.

DTL Pod (GTX 0.2ohm coil) 45-60W Best 55W

Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX DTL podWhen installing the pod the Axon chip detected 55W as being the optimal setting for the coil so that’s what I went with.

The coil is very feisty, responding instantly to the fire button. The inhale does carry some warmth but it’s really where the sweetness of the vape develops.

Aniseed tastes clean and sharp, kicking proverbial butt all over the place and slicing through a sweet, sparkling and crisp Blackcurrant on the exhale.

With the airflow toggle wide open the flavour is still intense, not broader or diluted in any way. I found that a pleasant surprise.

There’s nothing wet or dry about the exhale – it’s pretty much faultless and I have to put that down to the Corex tech.

The inhale is smooth and turbulence free but carries a moderate amount of noise. That’s to be expected with airflow wide open.

Vapour production is everything I would expect from a direct lung vape. Very often it obscured my vision and longer inhales created a fullness in the back of the throat.

With the airflow toggle wide open there’s still a minor degree of restriction. I’d say around 10% which for me is noticeable enough. So I wouldn’t class the pod as delivering a fully blown direct lung experience.

Possibly the only area where the pod could be improved.

Further Airflow Restrictions

Ok, this is where the airflow toggle really surprised me.

I say that because the slider offers the usual limited range of movement, where adjustments don’t usually tend to have much impact.

Yet positioning the toggle mid way made a huge difference. Airflow restriction increases to around 50% and a direct lung vape is instantly replaced by a semi restrictive one.

The flavour becomes even more concentrated but a minimal level of warmth remains.

Finally, closing the toggle off completely results in a very effective restrictive lung vape. Flavour properties are unaffected and the vape is equally as enjoyable at this restriction.

Not something I often write about when it comes to pod kits.

Max Wattage

For some reason Smart mode allowed me to vape up to 75W so I gave it a whirl. It didn’t faze the coil at all, even with regular chain vaping. Extended inhales were still possible with no signs of a dry hit and flavour and vapour production were unaffected.

I must say that it didn’t feel like much more heat was being generated. In fact the vape experience differed little from vaping at 55W.

So that was something of a head scratching moment. I think it’s probably a functionality glitch and in reality the power was hitting 60W max.

Still – with a coil performance this good, who’s complaining? Not me!

RDL Pod (GTX 0.4ohm coil) 26-32W Best 30W

I used Doozy Temptations Jam Tart, a 70VG/30PG E-liquid ratio with 3mg freebase nicotine applied.

I went with the 30W that the Smart mode was suggesting to test the GTX mesh coil.

Vaporesso RDL podWith the airflow toggle set wide open there’s around 10% more restriction when compared with the DL pod. It does feel like there’s more suppression on this setting due to the size and shape of the mouthpiece.

Flavour, flavour everywhere!

I’m not sure I’ve tasted better from an 80W pod kit. Certainly not with a coil running at 30W.

The Strawberry Jam oozes all the warm, sweet properties I would expect – then amplifies them. Very impressive stuff.

The flavour tastes rich and concentrated with enough warmth to enhance all the bakery notes. I get the full package from the word go.

The inhale is quite loud but not ear shatteringly so and very smooth and turbulence free.

This is your classic restrictive lung vape with all the enhanced flavour qualities it usually brings.

Further Airflow Restrictions

There’s really not a great deal of difference to airflow when moving the toggle to mid position. What does change is the amount of sweetness during inhale. It’s certainly boosted under further restriction.

Although no additional warmth is generated, flavour remains as impressive as ever. Those thick white clouds continue to spill out in a playful manner.

Closing the airflow off entirely results in the ultimate restrictive lung vape. Long, drawn out inhales are no issue for the coil but sweetness levels do become top heavy, obscuring overall flavour quality.

The bakery notes come through patchy at best but this is where concentration levels are at their very highest.

Maybe unsurprisingly this is also where the vape is at its quietest.

Max Wattage

Not really much to write home about.

An additional 2W isn’t going to deliver ground breaking results. But if you plan to use it you won’t be disappointed. For best results keep airflow wide open.

Battery Performance

I was still getting an excellent performance with 11% battery left! So although it only held up for around five hours using the DTL pod (approximately 200 puffs) it performed admirably.

Once the battery hit 10% things took an immediate nose dive.

It has to be stressed that everyone vapes differently. I frequently chain vape taking long protracted inhales so that’s going to have an impact on battery life.

Expect to add another hour to battery life when using the 0.4ohm GTX coil.

On average I vaped around 15ml of E-liquid during a single charge which made me thankful for receiving the 5ml pod version. These coils will guzzle the juice.

Pros

  • Excellent flavour and vapour production from both coils
  • No leaking
  • Easy to navigate menu screens using fire button and touch screen panel
  • Auto coil detect and smart mode
  • Super large filling port
  • Pocket friendly

Cons

  • Average battery life
  • Display suffers in direct sunlight
  • Horizontal charging (subjective)
  • Plastic fascia / panels prone to scratching easily
  • No auto draw feature
  • Juice guzzling coils (subjective)

Final Review Verdict

These GTX mesh coils will take some beating when it comes to flavour and cloud production. I put them up there with the Voopoo PnP range of coils.

What makes them so effective is the use of dedicated pods. The respective mouthpiece openings are shaped and sized to suit the requirements of specific coils in the series.

This gives them an advantage when it comes to performance.

Combined with the airflow toggle I found the DTL pod to be slightly more effective. The flavour was constantly boosted as airflow was restricted whereas the RDL pod struggled a little.

Remember to use E-liquid ratios of at least 70VG/30PG with these coils for best results.

Vaporesso have done wonders with this update in the Luxe series. Versatile pods, effective airflow and (in my opinion) flavour that’s pretty much unparalleled when it comes to pod kits.

Taking flavour to the max.

..I did say I’d be using that word a lot today!

vaporesso-luxe-xr-max-pod-kit-reviewWhat can I say? The addition of two new pods combined with excellent GTX mesh coils and quality airflow design means the Vaporesso Luxe XR MAX pod kit should be on any pod enthusiasts hit list. Trust me - you will not be disappointed with the performance!

    • I will be honest – I am not sure.

In theory it would be possible with the XR pod – but you also need to be aware of resistance limits – it is apparently compatible with the 0.15ohm mesh coil so I wouldn’t go any lower than that or higher than 1.2ohms.

But to be 100% sure I would contact Vaporesso – I usually find I get a quicker reply by messaging them on their social media.

  1. Neil, nice review. I ordered the silver about a month ago, still waiting for it’s arrival. Vaporesso Luxe series is – in my opinion – a great series of pods/pod mods. Can’t wait for mine to arrive. Keep up the excellent reviews.
