What Is The Best Temp Control Mod? We Take A Look At Our Top Picks For 2017
2016 was an excellent year for vaping and 2017 looks set to continue.
First off with the breakout success in sub ohm tanks, and now temperature control box mod technology coming on in leaps and bounds, items hitting the market at a rate never seen before, and prices tumbling daily, the wealth of options available to consumers is overwhelming and can be a bit bewildering to some.
Offering the premise of eliminating dry hits, a much cleaner vape and longer coil lifespan Evolv kicked off the temperature control revolution with the release of the DNA40 board at the early part of last year.
Since then chips developed by Yihi among others have hit the market offering customers a huge range of different options and have helped to send prices tumbling.
The technology is advancing at a rapid rate, and I’m sure by the end of the year the list below will be totally different, especially with the imminent release of mods utilizing the new Evolv DNA200 chip, but the temperature control vape mods below are some of the best temp control mods from the year to date…
Jacvapour Series B DNA75
Jacvapour have been producing quality devices for beginners to intermediate vapers for many years. It’s something they do very well indeed.
On of their most recent additions is the Series B DNA75 mod. As the name would suggest featuring one of the most trusted chips available, the eVolv DNA.
Capable of firing upto 75W, making use of a single (Min 20Amp) 18650 battery the Series B is a great option for vapers that don’t need to reach the heady wattage heights of other mods on this list.
The design is simple yet the quality is excellent and because it takes just one battery it’s also very compact.
A great option if you are looking for a quality device powered by a DNA chip.
- Available in kit form or mod only
- Three coil types in TC mode: Ti/Ni/SS
- Beautiful design
- 88mm x 22mm x 35mm

Voopoo Drag 157W Mod
Voopoo may not be a name everyone is familiar with in the vaping world but that hasn’t stopped them creating a superb TC mod.
The Voopoo Drag may have an unfortunate name but take that out of the equation and we have one hell of a device. The Drag uses the ‘Gene chip’, a chip that offers performance to match DNA devices.
It’s not just the internals that impress, for the vapers that prefer the old school ‘boxy’ type box mods this fits the bill perfectly with the Zinc Alloy finish giving a quality hand feel.
- 157W power output
- Temp Control compatible with the following coils: NI / TI / SS
- Powered by dual 18650 batteries

The SMOK T-Priv mod is incredibly sturdy. The Zinc alloy construction has been built to withstand the knocks that come with everyday use.
Rated for use upto 220W with dual 18650 batteries it will serve the most power hungry vapers even though we find vaping at a max of 150-160W with a dual battery setup offers the better max performance.
As mentioned the build quality is excellent but it’s the looks of this mod that really makes it stand out from the crowd. Not for vapers that don’t want to draw attention, the T-Priv offers a multitude of LED lighting options that may not appeal to all but can look pretty cool all the same.
- Output Power: Upto 220W
- Temperature Range: 200°F–600°F / 100°C–315°C

Capable of powering upto 150W it offers plenty of power for even the most advanced vapers. While it may not feature the much lauded eVolv DNA chip but the TC function works a treat nonetheless.
The design may not be for everyone but we personally loved it. If you are an Aspire fan then this is well worth a look.
- Dual 18650 batteries
- Resistance from 0.1Ohm
- Wattage Range: Upto 150W
- Temperature Control Range: 200-600F/100-315C
SX Mini M Class
Evolv may have started the temperature control revolution with the DNA40 chip, but Yihi revolutionized it completely with the SX350J chip present in the outstanding SX Mini M Class. Despite it’s pretty hefty price tag, the SX Mini M Class was an overnight success, many retailers selling out almost instantly and even 3 months along from it’s release date, the SX Mini M Class still remains one of the top selling mods around mainly for one reason- reliability.
Offering the highest quality construction, with a premium feel you are unlikely to have ever felt with any other mod, and a chip that just never seems to falter, the SX Mini M Class is one of the few higher priced mods that truly justifies it’s price tag, personally I would have been happy paying more.
The specs on paper aren’t anything groundbreaking, and have even been surpassed by lesser price mods, but what you are paying for here is a monumental testament to design quality, class and reliability, that to date no other mod has been able to match. It really does set the benchmark when it comes to temperature control devices, and does show that power isn’t everything!
- Output Voltage: 1.0 – 9.5 Volts
- Resistance: 0.15 ohm – 3.0 ohm
