Best mod - Geekvape Aegis Legend 2Geekvape rarely fail to impress with their vape mod releases and the Legend 2 impresses in style.

The Geekvape Legend 2 is the follow up to one of Ecigclick’s favourite mods (The Legend) and is capable of upto 200W output. Powered by dual 18650 batteries (sold separately) the Legend also sports IP68 waterproof/shockproof and dust proof design for the clumsy vaper out there. 2. Vaporesso Target 200 – (Best Duel Cell Mod)

Best Vape Mod Vaporesso Target 200Vaporesso have always been up there with the best in vapes and the Target range of vape mods delivers again. The Target 200 is actually capable of upto 220W and despite the hefty wattage the design is compact enough to be able to carry out and about easily.

We love the design. The screen is nice and clear, buttons well placed and the central placement of the tank finishes the look of nicely.

Performance doesn’t disappoint either, all you need to get up and running is a couple of 18650 batteries.

3. Voopoo Argus GT 2 – (Best Mod For Durability)

argus gt 2 best modWe like Voopoo. They have produced some of the better vape devices over the last few years. One of the latest is the Voopoo Argus GT 2.

It’s on the bigger side but still ticks all the boxes. It looks superb, great form factor, the Gene chip is a top performer.

The device is available in ‘kit form’ with the new MAAT tank, if you opt for this the tank is a great performer. But you can of course use any tank on top of this.

Plenty of power is available, upto 200W, and backed up by the dual 18650 batteries the battery life is good. Plus the mod is IP68 certified so it can withstand drops and accidental spillages.

4. JAC Vapour Series S22 – (Best Vape Mod for Beginners)

JAC Vapour series S22 vape modThe Series S22 by Jacvapour is kind of in between a vape pen and box mod but don’t let that put you off. This is a fantastic vape mod for beginners. However, if you are a newer vaper this is one of the best box mods to start your journey, it’s as easy as it gets.

It doesn’t have the features you may find in other devices but that’s kind of the point. You fill the tank, pop it on the battery and away you go. The supplied S22 tank is a great performer as well.

It offers a mouth to lung vape and a good sub ohm coil for direct to lung vaping. The mod automatically detects what coil you have installed and delivers the power accordingly, no variable wattage settings to mess about with here.

The mod is lightweight in the hand while still retaining a top quality build. Add to this a 2600mAh integrated battery and it also offers plenty of uninterrupted vaping. This does come as a kit so may not be suitable for those wanting to use their own tank.

5. VOOPOO Argus MT – (Best Integrated Battery Mod)

Best integrated battery mod - voopoo argus mtDid we mention we like VOOPOO vape mods? Well, here is another. There were two versions of this vape mod released at the same time. The Argus MT and the Argus XT. The difference being that the former features a 3000mAh integrated battery and the XT a replaceable battery (21700/18650).

Both are excellent, it really comes down to your preference on battery. The MT we are focusing on here is the integrated battery version. Featuring a 3000mAh battery, the MT can fire from 5-100W. It also has the option of various modes such as Turbo, Smart, RBA and Temp Control. So plenty to keep the more advanced vaper happy.

Add to this, what seems to be standard for most Argus devices, IP68 waterproof | dustproof | shockproof and we have a mod that can take a bash or three.

On top of the kit version VOOPOO have included the new MAAT Tank. This delivers great flavour and cloud for the direct to lung sub ohm vapers out there.

Last but not least the ARGUS MT is capable of fast charging via 3A Type C port.

6. Vaporesso Target 100 – (Best Compact Vape Mod)

Best compact mod - Vaporesso Target 100
A new addition to the Target range of mods from Vaporesso is the Target 100. This device was actually released alongside the Target 200 which is the dual battery version. Both devices rated highly in our recent tests.

Back to the Target 100! What do we like about this vape mod? First we like the compact form factor and the design. The rubber micro braiding grip not only adds to the aesthetics but also makes it comfortable in the hand. Add the well sized screen and we have a very good looking mod.

Second is the performance. The Target 100 can take 18650 or 21700 batteries and power up-to 100W. The 21700 in particular adds that little extra in terms of battery life. With the range of functions available for selection from the easy to navigate menu you will easily find the right setting to get the most from your vape.

If opting for the kit version, the included iTank and mesh coils gained near top marks for flavour. So no slouch for the sub ohm vapers amongst us.

Very good setup all round.

7. JAC Vapour Series B DNA75 – (Best DNA Vape Mod)

JAC Vapour Series B DNA75 Black EditionThe Series B DNA75 mod from Jacvapour has been an excellent addition to the box mod world.

I absolutely love this thing. It’s a classy looking device, the new model features a premium black PVD finish (often found on high end watches) with a matte fingerprint resistant coating.  It’s a hard wearing finish that is more resistant to chips and scratching.

It’s not all about looks though – as my mother used to tell me – the DNA75 has all the functions you would expect and is powered by a removable 18650 battery. Add to that the quality of the build and we have a little star of a vape mod.

Oh… Did I mention the size, as you can see from the image above the Jacvapour Series B nestles nicely into the palm of the hand and my hands aren’t the biggest.

One of the best vape mods to date and a worthy entry into our top vape mod list.

8. VOOPOO Drag E60 – (Best AIO Style Mod)

Best Mod voopoo Drag e60The Drag range of mods are some of the best devices on the market when it comes to quality and durability. Not only that but they look the business, we are big fans of the design.

The Drag E60 is features a big integrated battery (2550mAh) which allows good vape time even at the higher wattages. Despite the impressive battery the mod is still portable and compact.

It offers an impressive wattage of upto 60W, more than enough for most users, and comes with the new PNP pod 2 with easy to fit ‘Plug n Play’ coils. In our testing both coils included in the kit we received (PNP TW30 0.3ohm | PNP TW20 0.2ohm) knocked out superb flavour.

The mod is super compact and feels great in the hand with it’s leather grip. It feels and looks a lot more expensive than it is.

If an all in one (AIO) style vape mod is something that floats your boat then be sure to take a look at the E60.

9. Aspire MIXX – (Best Side by Side Mod)

Aspire Mixx 18650 Mode HandcheckHave to say we love the look of the Aspire Mixx mod. I mean come on, check that out!

Aspire have partnered with Sunbox. An Italian mod maker that produces some of the best looking devices on the market. Good news is, we don’t have to pay Sunbox prices for this beauty.

The Mixx is primarily powered by a 18650 battery but you can also adjust the mod, making it look even smaller, to accommodate a single 18350 battery.

It supports variable wattage/voltage as well as bypass mode and can fire upto 60W. Fairly basic when compared to other mod functions but if, like most, you just want to vape in wattage mode then you’re good to go.

On the tank front as long as your tank is 24mm or under it will fit in the Mixx.

What is a Vape Mod?

What is a vape Mod?
Vape mods come in all shapes and sizes. They come with integrated batteries as well as replaceable batteries. The latter of which will require some research in to battery safety.

They also come in varying wattage right the way up to 300W. More on that below.

The image above is a basic diagram of a box mod but it gives you an idea of the features and functions that are included. These are:

  • Fire Button (This activates the mod sending power from the battery to the tank)
  • Battery (Integrated or replaceable)
  • Display Screen – Not all mods have a screen. Those that do display information such as wattage, coil resistance (ohms) and battery life.
  • Wattage adjustment buttons
  • Function button – Not displayed above but this button is usually below the wattage adjustment buttons. It is used to access the menu on a mod. The menu will allow you to change various settings on your mod.
  • USB Charge Port – It is only recommended to directly charge the battery in a mod if it is integrated. Replaceable batteries should be charged using an external charger.
  • 510 Connection – This is on top of the mod and where the tank connects

The above, in a nutshell, are the features of a vape mod.

Vape Mod Buying Guide

For New Vapers:

Just because you’ve seen a MOD with a 200W or even 300W power output doesn’t mean this is the best box mod or more importantly the best vape MOD for you.

The likelihood of you actually using anywhere near that much power is not a reality for most.

50-90W is one of the most popular ranges that will cater to most sub ohm tanks on the market.

So there are many ways of approaching what would be the ideal device for you.

The first is considering what kind of vaper you are and what you expect to do with your box mod.

  1. Are you looking to move on from a pod vape or Vape Pen (Stick) style e cigarette?
  2. Do you use normal mouth to lung vape tanks where the coils are 1.0Ohm plus? Tanks such as (or similar to) the Aspire Nautilus or Innokin Endura T18/T20?

If so then you really don’t need a 200W box mod. These types of tanks typically need no more than 25-30W of power.

Our list features beginner vape mods that are great for mouth to lung type tanks.

There is an upside if you decide to go for a mod with higher wattage to use with a low wattage tank. The battery life could be extended considerably.

It’s worth noting care needs to be taken if going for higher wattage devices, set the power too high and your coils will burn and of course be ruined.

Intermediate Vapers

  1. Are you using sub ohm tanks (SMOK TFV/Aspire Cleito/ Horizon Falcon)?
  2. Or wanting to explore sub ohm vaping but don’t want to build your own RDA’s?

If so you will need a vape mod capable of handling coil resistances lower than 1.0 ohm. Most of the popular sub ohm tanks use coils around 0.15-0.5 ohms.

Double check the coil resistance of your tank before buying a vape mod to be sure they are compatible. This info will be displayed clearly on the product listing.

All of the box mods above are sub ohm capable.

I use a mix of tanks, one of which is the Aspire Nautilus 2s. This is mainly used when I’m going out as the performance is good yet it doesn’t spit out the clouds that a sub ohm tank does. I for one don’t want to be blowing out humongous clouds when I’m out in a bar!

70% of my use is with sub ohm tanks around the 40-65W mark depending on the tank I’m using. This is perfect for me and will likely be where a high percentage of sub ohm vapers will sit.

There are sub ohm tanks that come with 0.15-0.3 Ohm coils (Aspire Cleito Pro, SMOK TFV16, Freemax Mesh Pro) and to get the best out of them they need to be used at a higher wattage, around 50-85W and for some maybe even 100W+.

So if you can see yourself using coils in this range then be sure to buy a box mod with enough power.

TIP: If a coil requires 80W output then you will want to buy a vape mod that is capable of firing 100W+. Try not to use the mod at full wattage output. This will generally result in poor battery life.

Advanced Vapers

Or are you in the more advanced bracket of vapers that uses RBA’s almost exclusively?

This is still kind of similar to the advice given for sub ohm tank users above. You will need a device with a high wattage output that can handle low resistance builds.

Although if you are at this level then you likely know this already. It all depends on what resistance you are building at. So make sure the mod you buy is capable of handling any low resistance build you may vape.

This information, again, will be found on a product listing.

Integrated Battery or Replaceable?

  • Do you want a device that has a built in battery and you simply recharge using a USB cable?
  • Or do you want a box mod with a removable battery?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a unit with an integrated battery (these are some of my favourite devices) but they are in essence disposable products.

When your battery dies the whole unit needs replacing. This sounds worse than it is in reality.

Under normal use a Lithium Ion battery should last a long long time although performance will degrade slightly over time.

You will most likely be well on to your new shiny new box mod before the current one dies a death.

The other option is a vape mod with removable batteries. This allows you to just replace the battery when it dies or decreases in performance rather than replacing the whole MOD.

Most vape mods that require replaceable batteries, if not all, require you to buy batteries separately and if you don’t have a suitable charger then you will also need one of these.

The most popular size of battery used is the 18650 but newer designs are catering to 20700 and 21700 batteries of which usually have better run times and can be used at higher wattages.

You will also (definitely) need to learn what batteries are suitable for each device. I can’t state how important that is! Read our guide on batteries for sub ohm vaping here.

So there are lots of things to be clear with before making that purchase and it’s always recommended to take a look at Ecigclicks individual vape reviews and reviews from other sources before coming to a final decision.

If you are new to sub ohm vaping please read our beginners guide to sub ohm vaping here if that’s the direction you want to go.

  1. Geekvape Legond 2 have varry bad quality control/flaky firmware. Ive had 2. One lasted 3 months, the other 3 days, before developing the known falt of not turning on.

  2. I am thinking about purchasing the VooPoo Argus MT 100wt kit. Looking for anyone’s experience with this kit. Thank you.

  3. Freemax Maxus 2 200w should be up there cuz it blows the L200 out in flavor all day. I have both. The closest to the Freemax is the GeekVape L200 Classic 21700 but it’s still nowhere near as flavorful as the Maxus 2 200w with the same tanks on both still the Maxus is way up there above the GeekVape mods.

  4. My fave was not on the list, my fave is my fave because I’ve owned 100s of stick mods pens since 2012, my personal fave is the unimax 22 by joyetech because I’ve run it hard and it’s lasted me 4 years now and still runs hard with an amazing battery life, a day plus off charger if any of these last 4 years let me know when it gets there but sa far that cheap little unimax has, plus it uses all the heads from the sticks and mods I have that did eventually die like on 4 stick princes dead, Xstick, hell if I name them all this will be unreadable a good stick is one that works far you and packs a punch, this one does and again 4 years, sooooo

  5. Hope this helps others. GeekVape and SCAR are the same. There product I had only lasted 6 months geekvape, 9 months SMOK. And if you try to warranty your mod they will offer you a way cheaper replacement that is not what you want. I really liked the big screens so I could view my battery life on my mod so I bought the Geekvape aegis. 5 months later the battery cover would pop open. Talked to geek vape and they offered me a cheaper Legend with a way smaller screen that you need a magnifying glass to read as a replacement.

Need less to say I had a SMOK with a touch screen on it that was large enough to read Loved that one until the treads would just spin on the top. Had to send that one in for warranty and guess what. “we can offer you the non tough screen scar that is an upgrade! but you need a magnifying glass to read it. oh and it doesn’t have a touch screen.” Basically a cheaper model.

So my advice is to not buy GeekVape or SMOK. Just feel as consumers we should be more educated about a products quality! Thanks.

  6. Geek vape aegis legend 2 aren’t as durable as claimed, I’ve just broke my second one in less then a year. The top plate where the tank screws in is held by plastic and will break pretty easily compared to the original legend mod which I had for over 3 years before that stopped working. Dropped it more then I could count. So beware if you work construction or just having it in your back pocket and forgot to take it out before sitting, and yes that is how the first one broke in my back pocket..

    • My wife and I are now 6 replacements in on our geek vape max100’s! Same issue. Cheap plastic plate where the tank screws on. I don’t get why they would put plastic under a metal plate with tiny screws to secure it anywhere on something that claims to be indestructible. My next mod will not be manufactured by geek vape!!!

  7. Hi. I’m Rusty, and I have a couple of questions. I am a new vaper. I smoked 2 packs a day and smoked for years, quit for several years, and started vaping a couple of months ago. I was sort of talked into the oxva origin, and it’s ok. I do like the replaceable batteries. My problem is that I vape A LOT, and am looking for something with a larger tank, and that will have an easy pull, mouth to lung, I’m seeing it called. I also really crave the throat hit. Not looking to go over 6 on the nic, but need a coil that will last a long time. Barely getting a week from these. I also huff several different flavors. What’s going to be my best option? Again, I’m new to vaping, and a lot of the terms I’m seeing, I do not know. Maybe a site that explains those too? Thanks for your time and help.

    • hi rusty, try sticking to the same flavor to prolong coil use. also coils are only meant to be good fr abut 10-14 days. tht being said, some flavors with a hgh citrus content or some menthols and anything with cinnamon will ruin yur coil faster. just the nature of the flavors.
tanks: there is lot of gret tnks out there. my favorite is the zeus regular tank. takes teh z series coils. i run about 40 watts on teh .04 50-60 watt coil and have o roblem getting 2 or 3 weeks out of mine. top airflow and top fill. can be foudn with teh legend l200 kits. which in my opinions has been a very durable mod for myself. I am brutal o my devices and have gone through around 4 of them in 3 years. but nothing else can hold up to me unless its the argus gt2. i hope this helps

    • Get you a 30mm tank. RTA.
Liken a hive, or voltrove. And use coils you make or buy. NOT the screw in replacement coils. Those suck. Rebuild is the way to go. RTA

  8. Hi jonny how are u? After i choose voopoo drag 2 n i use until this day, now i wanna know about jac vapour series b vs hastur mod. Which better for mtl. Thx again

  9. I mainly use the Smok G-Priv 3 with the V-12 cloud beast tank or if im otg alot in a day ill put the tank on the Rigel. I am kinda kicking myself for switch from the V-12 Prince started out a 120ml bottle would last me 2-3weeks now im lucky if I get a week from one. though Smok definitely got the model name right for the coils cause they drink juice just like a V-12 engine does fuel.

  10. I have to disagree with the editors choice. I bought the aegis x and after 2 months the “great screen” on this pos quit working. My opinion is aegis x is garbage.

    • Hey Rick,

I’m happy to learn that I wasn’t the ONLY person that had an issue with the “X”!!!
When I purchased the “X” I was actually on the hunt for a good High Wattage Mod (3-4 Battery, 250+ Watts, etc… Yes, I’m one of those weird “Unicorns” that is constantly chasing the heat, strength, resistance, and the resultant Billowing Volcanic Clouds borne of said combination)–
Well, after reading review after review, speaking to several of my favorite [local] Vape Shops/Owners, submitting a HOST of inquiries to some of the most popular [Online] Vape Shops RE: THEIR personal recommendations, everyone kept directing me to the “X” Kit!!!
Then, E•Cig Mafia sent me a coupon for said Rig that was just too good to be true– So (against my better judgement), I remained at the 200W mark (that I was trying to get away from) because the general consensus seemed to be that the “X” would be the answer to all my prayers (and with the coupon I’d received, I’d be stupid to pass it up)!!!
When she FINALLY arrived (after nightmarish delays), I was initially impressed by the beautiful screen and interchangeable themes, not to mention the three customizable strength options…
However, after a week vaping with the pedal to the metal under the “Powerful” setting, it became just as airy and useless as the 198W setting on my Legend…
Also (much to my chagrin), I was sent the “Cerberus” tank instead of the Zeus, which I’m SURE made a massive difference…

By the 90-day mark, I had to exchange my BRAND NEW batteries… and every couple months thereafter.
And even after playing with the performance settings for MONTHS on end, I was NEVER able to attain the promised “powerhouse” performance… But what was done, had been done, sooooo… I was going to make the best of it…

By the 6-month mark, the device began to malfunction.
The device had NEVER been dropped in that window of time (because I’d been hospitalized for MONTHS after three of my vertabrae exploded) and I had to hide my vape in my purse because it was a “Zero-Tolerance Nicotine-Free Campus” and I had to “sneak” to vape in my room, hehe… But the unit began shorting out, locking up, freezing, and shutting down…
I contacted E•Cig Mafia, Aegis Direct, and even sent it over to my favorite [local] Vape Shop for review….

By the time I hit the 7-month mark, the screen was COMPLETELY BLACK…
Eventually, I had to go back to my “Legend” set, even though the strength IS/was lacking, because both E•Cig Mafia AND Aegis refused to do ANYTHING to repair, rectify, and/or recompense me for the defective unit (moral being: I will NEVER buy from/support E•Cig EVER again)!!!!
They even informed me (thereafter) that the “X” is KNOWN to leak LiQuid through the 510 connector and will irreparably “short out” the ENTIRE MOD.

And I am NOW, BACK on the prowl for a QUALITY, High-Powered, 3-4 Battery, 300+ Wattage Mod… But THIS time, I know what NOT to look for, and what (not to mention WHERE) to AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!
      ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️

  11. Now the only thing missing is best hybrid and/or mechanical mod. I saw that you guys seems rarely reviews those mods. It would be nice if you can review more of them. Thanks

  12. Hi guys,

3 things I was hoping to get some help with…

So I just picked up vaping 1.5 weeks ago after I quit smoking. I’ve been smoking for 15 years. The tobacco flavors I got are nothing like the cigarettes I used to smoke (B&H) and I would love it if someone could suggest a flavor that closely resembles B&H, Belmontes (Canada) or Marlboro lights.. frankly anything that resembles a cigarette would do. haha

The vape shop suggested an aegis boost kit and I got one. I like the way its been working. I even got the RDTA for it. However, I find that the RDTA is not producing the same flavor as the pod. Could someone suggest why that may be the acse? I am a DTL vaper. I have been using 70/30 fruit and a vanilla tobacco juices.

Lastly, I have been watching a lot of videos and reading a lot of stuff on the internet. I would probably want an upgrade soon. While I enjoyed setting up the RDTA for my boost, I find that it uses a lot more juice. How often should I rewick/change coil (when should one do so)? If I upgrade, should I stick to an AIO/podmod? or should I go for a mod?

MAN! I AM SO LOST IN THIS VAST, EXCITING WORLD OF VAPING!

Any and all replies will be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    • Hey,

Sounds like you’ve been busy and jumping right in there, good to see 🙂

OK, so first with the tobacco flavours. As I’m sure you have seen by now there is quite a bit of trial and error when it comes to vaping to find a good setup. This is especially true when it comes to finding flavours, tobacco is quite a tough one to get close to the real thing.

I personally don’t vape tobacco flavours anymore but a number of reviewers on the site do and have reviewed quite a few options.

I’d recommend checking out the Naturally Extracted Tobacco (N.E.T) e-liquids. We have covered a brand called Black Note that is excellent when it comes to replicating that cigarette flavour.

You can check out a couple of reviews:

      https://www.ecigclick.co.uk/black-note-e-liquid-review/
      https://www.ecigclick.co.uk/black-note-v-e-liquid-review/

Now, they are 50/50 but if you are using a pod system this shouldn’t be an issue.

As for the RBA on the Boost it could be a number of things (the coils/wick you use, the way you build). Check out the review from Gaz here. If you have any specific questions regarding this he is the man to ask..

As for upgrading. There are a few things to consider but it all comes down to what you want from a vape and how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go 🙂

So, going for a mod/tank combo can offer the following:

      – Longer battery life (depending on device and the wattage at which you will vape)
      – More power
      – A true sub ohm (DTL) tank – By this I mean that ‘proper’ DTL tanks tend to have a wider bore drip tip/mouthpiece and much bigger coils that will produce bigger clouds and, some of the time, stronger flavour.
But.. many of these types of tanks love to drink e-liquid for a living. If you think the Boost in RBA mode likes a drink then you could be in for a shock with these 🙂
      – You can pair a mod with a lot of tanks and RBA’s (RDA, RTA, RDTA). These types of rebuildable tanks offer a lot more room to build on than the Boost deck as an example.

Sticking with a pod system offers ease of use, manageable e-liquid consumption. It’s a really straightforward way of getting your vape fix that just works.

Also, there may not be much in terms of an ‘upgrade’ so to speak from where you are at now with the Boost and with you having a rebuildable pod.

You come across as someone that likes to try new things and doesn’t mind experimenting, which is great and a must when exploring different vape options.

Maybe for the time being carry on using the Boost but try to master the RBA to give you more flavour. As mentioned above, leave a comment on the Boost review with any questions on this.

Then a little down the line look to add a mod/tank combo to your setup to use alongside the Boost. Many vapers use more than one device at a time and phase from one device to another once they find something that little bit better.

      Hope that makes sense 🙂

      • Hey Jonny,

Of course that made sense. That was very helpful. Thank you so much for that reply!

You are right. I think I should spend some more time with the RBA on my boost before I give up on it. I mean its only been about 2 weeks. I am going to continue to explore my options. It doesn’t help when most reviews are saying great things about the products being reviewed (I wonder whether it has anything to do with getting free stuff and/or money) haha.

        Thanks again man.

        Much appreciated.

        Cheers

        • No problem, be sure to ask questions on specific product posts if you feel the need, the reviewers are a helpful bunch.

Also, I can’t speak for anyone other reviewers outside Ecigclick but the vapers that review here have a lot of experience and are certainly not swayed by a product that may have been sent for the purposes of review. Also we don’t charge for reviews.. When something isn’t performing as they would expect (based on using a lot of product) they will note that.. But they will also give credit where it’s due. 🙂

At the end of the day though it is one person’s opinion which may differ from yours.. Hence why we have comments open on the reviews so people can share their views and opinions as well.

Keep us updated with how you go though and if you manage to get some flavour from that RBA 🙂

          • I just changed the coil on the boost from 0.4 to 0.6. I like the flavour and feel like its producing more cloud. I like it but what exactly is the difference the 0.4/0.6 coils make?

I’m sorry for the dumb questions. Alsooo.. I read my previous reply and I want to apologise if it felt like I somehow insinuated that you are a sellout.. haha.. I swear I didn’t mean for it to sound like that. I find most of the reviews to be very helpful including the ones on this site. You guys are doing a great job! So, thank you for that.

            Appreciate your time.

            Cheers

        • Quite right! Although I personally think this is for ‘true sub ohm devices’ like the big tanks and RBA’s that are made to deliver those big clouds. If using a sub ohm coil in a pod system or RBA that is designed to be used on a pod system then all should be OK.. Bit confusing I know! But the latter are a lot smaller coils that don’t have the kick of say a SMOK TFV16 sub ohm tank.

Reading back I think I started out recommending tobacco options for the current device Lucifer was using.

  13. Also I can’t help but notice your claim to have tested at least 351 mods in 91 days. That’s some going. 3.8 mods per day.

    • Well ain’t you a little ray of mathematician sunshine:) The title is meant to read as the amount of mods we’ve reviewed over all time – in other words based on our reviews and experience we know a decent mod – so using that as a starting point we measure the mods released in any given year and judge them as to how well they stand up…pretty obvious really mate…anyway maybe you could now pop off and count the number of times I’ve written the word ‘pedant’ in my reviews and news…you may be there some time…cheers 🙂

  14. This guy always has at least 2 Jac Vapours on the list and a Smok or two.

Why would anybody want a 3 battery Uwell mod? A Valyrian 2 works on any 2 battery mod and probably some 1 battery devices.

    • ‘This guy’ has an opinion based on all of our reviews and all from different reviewers in the team…it’s an opinion which everyone is entitled to – yes even you…you’d be surprised how many vapers like kits and mods that you don’t 🙂

    • Not sure what your point is Justin.. The Uwell mod is, for us, the ‘Best 3 Battery Mod’ as clearly stated.. Not sure it would make sense to put a single/dual cell mod in there.

SMOK have been making some excellent devices recently after going through a couple of years of ‘average’ and JAC have always been quality IMO and have top notch customer service to back it up.

  15. Hi,

Does anyone know where I could buy a Smok Micro One from? Or if anyone has one they don’t use could I buy it from yourselves? I know it’s an old model and it is discontinued but I thought it was worth an ask.

    Thanks in advance,
    Cam.

  16. Greetings. I think that when you update your list of best mods you should really consider taking the geekvape models off your list. I like the original geekvape and I like the geekvape solo but when my geekvape Legends died prematurely because of the contacts that go bad on them, they would not replace or repair them. I’m not the only one. Many many other people have complained about their products breaking and the company not standing behind them even when they say that they will all the time. I certainly do hope you take this into consideration when you list your best mods for sale in the future. Thank you kindly

    • Agree with Richard – bought an Aegis Legend, which only works after downgrading the firmware
Bought an Aegis X so 2 decent mods to use (in theory) – never worked (left battery always showed dead)
2 weeks after returning all I know from tracking is it’s ‘on its way back to the sender’

Came across this whilst looking for another (non-geekvape) mod

      • The aegis x has been great for me it’s been over a year now and no issues might be a manufacturing issue. I use a sub ohm take and a cleito pros and I get a great hit and smooth taste.

    • Totally agree! didn’t expect mine to just die after 7 mths and basically get told “Tuff, shit happens! buy another one!”

  17. I’ve been vaping for about five years now – used vaping to quit a bad smoking habit. It took me a LONG time to figure out the set up that works best for me. I have had the Tesla Nano 120W with a Crown Uwell tank with .5 ohm coil for about two and a half years now. I love it, but am having problems with the battery door on the mod popping open randomly and the batteries falling out, so I’m looking for something else. I’d like to get something that doesn’t have the same style of battery door on the bottom, but I definitely want removable batteries. I’ve also learned that I am a DTL Vaper. I adjust my wattage between 30 – 34 w with the air flow wide open. I vape a 70/30 ejuice with 9mg nicotine. I’m not sure what the best new set up would be and would like your advice, please.

  18. Hi.. I would like to use the aspire nautilus with the vola mod. Would this be a good combination?? If not what would you recommend to use with the vola?? I have been using just the E cig cartimisers with vision spinner batteries and want to go on to something better. I’ve been vaping and off the cigs for 3 years now. But am still not experienced with any other products. I have a friend who swears by the aspire.. But the battery she uses is not available anymore. I’ve married these 2 up together just through reading reviews. Your advice would be great!! Thanks.

      • Thanks for your reply!. You haven’t used the vola. So what would u recommend instead? I have just found your site and am really enjoying reading all your reviews along with the comments. I think I have learnt more in a day from you than I have over the 3 years of vaping. So your recommendation would be appreciated. Thanks.

  19. I currently have 2 mods and a pod. i use whichever mod depending on my mood but have found that they are very good vapes. My Tesla Punk 220 is more durable which is great since I have a bad habit of dropping my mod or it getting knocked over. My Smoant Naboo is also a very good mod with the exception of the tank that comes with it and the magnets that hold the back on where the batteries are located. If I feel like I need that extra boost of nicotine I use my Perkey Lov Transformable Pod. I love that it has a chain so you can wear it around your neck but that it also twists to become the shape of a heart. I have used a few mods over the past year and so far these are the best mods and pod that I have ever used

  20. Hi all.

Relatively new to vaping and recently upgraded from a Endura T20 S to a iStick Pico with Melo 3 tank and enjoyed it for a whopping 6 days before it completely failed and won’t turn on. I’ve got my money refunded so looking at other options so after some recommendations.
I like the adjustable airflow on the Melo tank so I could alternate between DTL and MTL but I never bothered (not that I had a chance to learn) all the different temp settings etc and just adjusted the wattage to suit the Melo and my old Prism T20S tank.

Could anyone recommend other reliable battery mods. Ideally one that gives good flavour (I like the Dinner Lady juice) and not overly fussed with all the settings, and one that uses 18650 batteries as I also bought brand new ones and a charger 😛

    • Hey Lee,

The flavour is down to your tank and adjusting the wattage on the mod to find your sweet spot so choosing a mod is all down to what you like the look of.

Here are some recommended single 18650 battery mods that we personally rate highly (can also be seen above).

      JAC Vapour Series B DNA75
      Wismec CB-80
Geekvape Aegis – A little chunkier for sure but offers a lot (water/shock proof) and looks great.

Let me know if you have any more questions on anything!

    • I’d recommend you look into just getting a mod that takes 2 18650 batteries… you’re gonna end up carrying around a 2nd battery anyway if you go with a 1 battery model so why not just keep everything in 1 place? I have a really nice sx mini that never leaves the house with me cause the single battery just doesnt last if you need any real power. Also, you mentioned temp control… yea it’s nice to have the option, but it’s not always as consistent on mods in my opinion. I’ve always stuck to wattage mode when using tanks and gotten everything I needed out of them.

A couple of 18650 mods to consider:

      1) simple but good- the Wismec RX2 21700 is pretty solid. It can use 2x 18650s. I had the older model of this mod; it spent a year sitting in my pocket as my primary mod, and held up nicely. It still works but it’s gone into retirement. This is a pretty simple mod and missing some options that others have, but it’s a solid performer with all the basics you need.

      2) A kit with good features- The Innokin proton. Comes in a kit with a nice tank. Great, easy to use user interface, a big easy to read screen, and some extra frills. My favorite feature is that you can set it up to change wattage over time, so you can program it to heat up your coil for a second then lower the wattage for the rest of the hit. You can also change the display color to match your tank if you like.

      3) portable quality- I know you said you bought 18650s, but something else to take a look at is the Lost Vape Orion DNA. It is a different type of setup that uses higher nic juice but burns less of it per hit; it’s a smaller mod with an integrated battery, and you buy disposable tanks (pods) for it with built in coils. Like I said, whole different style but it’s really catching on. I actually just ordered one after talking to a couple of buddies who have purchased them. Super portable, tons of options, and it switches from mtl to dl.

A quick note on tanks too… if you’re looking for a sub-obm tank, definitely go for one that uses mesh coils. It’s a newer style of coil that is more efficient; better flavor, lasts longer. I use a freemax mesh pro; it’s a larger tank but it’s my new favorite. There are a ton of coil variations you can get for it to change how it hits. The tank matters more than the mod does as far as getting the type of hit you want off your vape. The innokin mod I recommended above comes with a decent mesh tank so it’s a good set to order if you wanna check out a new tank with your new mod.

      I hope this helps!

    • I recommend either the Tesla Punk 220 watt and a Freemax Pro tank or a Smoant Napoo 225 watt mod with the same tank. I have never had a problem out of the Freemax tank and I have had it on several different mods. The Tesla is very durable and the Smoant has a locking button that keeps you from accidentally raising or lowering the watts on your mod.

  21. Hi Jonny,

Great site full of good info. I used to have an aspire pocket vape pen to get me into vaping and stop smoking. But now looking for something a bit better as it wasn’t very strudy.

Id like a MTL vape (mod or not – not too fussed) thats not too big to fit in your pocket but has a punch. Not fussed about making a cloud. What would be the best options to consider?

    Cheers

  22. Hi Jonny! I am looking to buy a vape mod but I still can’t make up my mind even after reading your post. I just want a vape that has good clouds and good taste as I don’t care for the nic. I would want a box that didn’t look too bulky so perhaps the Jacvapour might be a good option, but I read that that is MTL and I think I need DTL. Anyways I also found this other mod from Ijoy called the “shogun univ kit” which looks absolutely amazing and it seems like a good one as well, but I don’t know for sure and I can’t seem to get it shipped to me (netherlands). If you have any suggestions I’d appreciate it a lot.

  23. Hi, thanks for this. One thing to mention, I bought the Aspire Zelos – 50W and it’s junk. Fell apart in no time and the tiny coil didn’t give any flavour. I’m surprised to see it here.
    Jim

    • That’s a shame to hear Jim.. Mine is still looking good (bar scuffs and scratches) after 1.5 years. Of course the battery isn’t quite what it was but that’s the nature of the beast with cells. Thanks for sharing your experience with it though!

  24. Hiya. I am a complete newby trying to quit the fags. I would definitely be MTL. I am looking for a easy to use vape. I need a one brand does the job kinda vape. But ideally with a tank that has a slightly bigger capacity than the small vape pens I have been using (and they are terrible lol) Any suggestions please.

    • Hi Maz,

Good to see you’re looking to make the switch.

The max capacity in the UK is 2ml due to regulations unfortunately. It’s not too bad though for certain devices.

I’ve been using the Innokin EQ pod mod a lot recently. I’d recommend taking a look at using nic salt e-liquids with this as they can be more effective in helping you stay off the cigs.

Have a look at the two links mentioned above and any questions on either leave a comment on those posts 🙂

      Cheers

      Jonny

  25. I am using a Vaporesso with a Veco tank. The problem is the EUC Clapton 0.4ohm coils. I have primed them and started low on the watts (15-20) but eventually they either taste burnt or the e-liquid (70vg/30pg) has almost zero flavour once I reach 35+ watts. I haven’t cranked it up past 45 watts and am unsure if I should? Also is Vaporesso a decent make as I was considering getting the Revenger Kit with the NRG tank or would you suggest going down another route. I mainly want decent flavour from my experience.

    • It sounds like maybe you’re having wicking issues. I gave up on tanks where I can’t make the coils and do the wicking myself. Once you get the hang of building a few favorite tanks, you’ll never go back to buying pre-made coil modules. After that, my next addiction turned to mixing my own juices. I now have favorite mixes, and know exactly what kind of wicking they need to ensure a full bodied hit every time. More VG, and you’ll need looser wicking to get enough juice to the coil… more PG and you’ll need tighter wicks to keep it from leaking and spitting.

      • not neccessarily true.. i bought the girlfriend a Voopoo Too as a gift and shes let me try it a few times. I thought it was so impressive that im now considering getting a voopoo drag 2 kit just cos i think the flavour generated by the uforce tank/ coils is very good for a stock subohm tank! sometimes i find that wicking and coiling can be more annoying than its worth – especially if you are out and about.

  26. Hi Johnny, have been running an ijoy lux for a few years and was looking at the ijoy avenger kit with tank and 20700’s.. What’s your thoughts?

    • Hey David,

Wow.. The Lux has lasted you well, I remember that one 🙂

We haven’t actually had our hands on the iJoy Avenger kit.

From what I’ve heard it’s a good kit though and you shouldn’t go too far wrong with it.

      Cheers

      Jonny

  27. Hey I’m looking for a new setup so I can have multiple flavours on the go at once. Right now I have an aspire speeder with a vandy vapes bonza rda running Clapton coils at about .26 ohms. More of a flavor chaser but big clouds are fun. Any recommendations?

  28. Hi guys! I’m from Estonia, smoking SMOK Alien 220w. Its awesome but already a bit old.Want a new one, similar kind. My friend has Voopoo Drag and its great. Should i just buy new Alien or is there any similar vapes. Thanks

  29. Hey team, I am currently trying to decide between a vaporesso revenger and a voopoo drag and was wondering what your recommendation is between the two and why? Cheers

    • Of the two I personally prefer the Voopoo Drag. A great performer and I think the looks and form factor are great 🙂 Feels really solid in the hand.

Just a personal preference though 🙂

  30. I am a newbie need help! looking to buy a vape device any suggestions? I want one where you get the best in flavor and lasts as I used to smoke.

        • By reading the post linked to that fully explains the difference to those that are new to vaping?? I personally think it’s important for new vapers to learn and understand the basics of vaping. It helps in ensuring the right kind of product is recommended, both hardware and e-liquid.

Obviously you have a one vape fits all kind of attitude.. Rather than leaving a ‘stupid’ comment why don’t you enlighten us by recommending a product to Philippe?

  31. hi, I was hoping to ask a question. I went from using a 20watt e leaf I stick now a 50watt aspire zelos. I have went through a few of each and I was hoping to get something that might last a little longer . I am a MTL vapor I love my aspire nautilus mini top. I was wondering if mods thathave a removable battery would last longer and if so which one would you recommend for me? I usually only go up to about 10 or 11 watts because I seem to burn my coil if I go up to high.I sick on my mod all day lol. thanks for any info!!

    • Hi Amber,

Removable battery mods can of course last longer as you can just replace the battery when it starts to diminish rather than changing the entire mod when you have an integrated battery. All this of course is based on the internals of the mod working well over time 🙂

Just be sure to read up on battery safety and if you are carrying around spare batteries a case/sleeve for your batteries are essential. Never carry around loose batteries in your bag or pocket.

One more thing that will be good to invest in is an external charger. It will not only allow for safer charging but you will also be able to charge your spare battery so you will always have your mod powered up and ready to go, which as a heavy vaper will be good for you.

As for devices, the following are all solid options:

      Jacvapour Series B DNA
      Wismec CB-80 Mod
      Eleaf Pico 21700
      Joyetech Espion Solo

Let me know if you have any other questions..

      Jonny

      • Biggest problem with internal lipo batteries is if they become unbalanced, theres no way to charge them. I had a istick 200 that became unbalanced in a week, and as a safety feature would not allow it to charge. Would definitely recommend removable batteries, and an external charger.

  32. Hi Johnny,

I was hoping you could give me a couple of box mod recommendations please?

I have been using an aspire breeze 2 to replace the cigarettes I would normally smoke when in the pub. However I’ve started to notice that the battery runs out before closing time!! I am not a massive cloud chaser but want a compact, well built and long battery lasting mod for direct to lung use.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers!!

    • Hey mate.. Check out the following:

Aspire Zelos kit, the Nautilus 2 tank is a good one and it’s compact, not as small as the Breeze mind! But if you are looking for good battery life then this should be good.

The Nautilus 2 does however provide more of a MTL vape similar to the Breeze, although you can take shorter direct to lung hits with the 0.7ohm coil.

Jacvapour Series S 22 – Another good kit, easy to use with an excellent tank.

Let me know if you have any other questions on these or anything else you may see 🙂

      Jonny

      • Great thanks for the reply!!!! I saw the s22 and was considering it so it’s good that you agree!

However I was also thinking that having a replaceable battery might be useful (especially when going to weekend festivals and stuff) is there an option in this space that offers removable batteries so I can carry spares?

        Thanks again!!!

  33. Hi, I need help guys, I’m vaping since 2016 and still can’t stop cigarettes. Have couple of kits all dna hcigar s and SX minis, lots of flavors all tank models and still can’t throw cigars away. What’s the best juice and Nic doze to end the smoking habit…. thanks

    • Hi Billy,

It’s hard to say what the best e-liquid would be for you as tates differ, I’ve not personally had any cigar flavoured e-liquid if you are looking to replace that sensation. For nicotine strengths it’s normally recommended to start higher and work your way down but as you’ve been vaping for a couple of years I’m guessing you may have tried that already.

Michelle, one of our reviewers, was dual use (cigs and e-cigs) but over the last 7/8 days she hasn’t had any tobacco. This is down to vaping with Nic Salts so definitely worth trying these out if you are looking to get the cravings under control.

    • Hi Bill.. i am also planning to quit cigratte so i have started vaping .. it have been 3 weeks i have stopped smoking cigratte ..i stay around people who smokes cigratte but still i dont feel smoking that .. i believe first you have to make up your mind that you are going to quit it..i have been smoking since 22 years and now i feel its time to quit it.. good luck mate …

    • Hey billy,

I’ve stopped smoking for 3 months now and I was a hectic smoker, 2 packs a day.. try getting rid of the cigarettes especially if you know it’s in your house or somewhere near to you.. and give it one week.. the taste for cigarettes will leave your system.. and you will enjoy your juices more.. but don’t fool your self by having one cigarette a day or lessen you consumption because that would only lead you to smoke one more again.. it worked for me so I’d reccomend that..

      • For me it hasn’t worked like that. I quit on and off.

The last time I just made a call that I either want them or not and why, I really asked myself why. I decided it was philosophical – I didn’t like the amount of money and health I’m paying and who I’m paying it to – the same people who willingly sell this poison and the reason why I ever started at a young age and impressionable on pressure from peers and kept going because TV makes it look so cool that every time I saw a stranger smoke I thought gee I want to be cool now too and smoke one.

So, I haven’t smoked cigarettes for one year this time (in the past it would be half a year that I managed). I don’t think I’m going back to them. I did smoke one this year, during an intense moment for me, but it wasn’t for the pleasure of it, it was for the psychological factor. It could have been something else, like two bottles of alcohol instead of the one… I knew it was an exception. That was a couple of months ago. It didn’t make me crave them again. Although it would in the past. Last year when I went back to smoking for what was supposed to be only a couple of weeks, I couldn’t let go, and I had developed that pleasure, which I never got from others, I mean I enjoyed the puffing, but I could never say I liked that smoke, I mean I knew it was bad, but it was some bad that I had accepted as good for me in some ways.

Anyway, what I was getting to is the way I finally managed to “quit” last year after a few months of smoking reaching 12 a day, which was more than 8 a day the most I would constantly smoke ever before at which point I usually “quit”. I didn’t just throw them out the window. I said “ok I only have a couple left, I’ll smoke this one when I really feel like it, or postpone and see if I feel even more the craving later, and leave the last for tomorrow, and do the same with that. So I ended up doing just that. But the next day, I thought, if I could hold out for half a day, maybe I can postpone it until tomorrow. Anyway, I’m not sure how things ended up, I probably smoked that too, but I just didn’t have anymore and not being around smokers helped too. It was weird not going out for smokes at work though.

    • Om vapors (and I’m sure some others) carry WTA juices, which stands for “whole tobacco alkanoids”. They give you nicotine and some of the other compounds you get from burning cigs that you dont get from vaping normal nic juice. Might be a good starting point to finding a step down that will work for you. I quit smoking by vaping, and the fact that I still wanted cigs after a day of vaping for quite some time showed me how much other stuff besides nicotine comes out of tobacco when you burn it. Good luck!

  34. Hey Jonny,
I just started the whole vape thing to give up smoking… not doing so great at that though. 🙁
I bought what I though was a cheap kit when I was in the UK in December, but it seems I got stitched up.
The day I got back home I charged it up and filled it up but it just spat juice up the mouth piece, took it to a shop and they just said throw away the tank…. 🙁
Anyway, got a new tank and has been OK but battery life is crap (non replaceable) , lasts only a couple of hours. and doesnt give me a lot of satisfaction… hence I keep grabbing a smoke.

So my cousin in the UK has a Smok 220w alien kit she swears by, has not had a cigarette since getting it…. They are getting hard to find in NZ so would that be a good kit to get me off the smokes? are there other brands of similar quality?
I dont want to show off and make big ass clouds.. I just want a smoke 🙂

    Cheers,
    Neil

    • Hey Neil,

Doesn’t sound like a great start but good to hear you’re giving it another shot.

The SMOK Alien is good but it’s not necessarily a beginners device. You may know Neil, but if not, there are two main types of vaping, mouth to lung and direct to lung. The latter is what you would be getting with the Alien kit and included tank.

So, be worth checking out the linked guide above to see what type you are.

The TFV8 tank that usually comes with the kit is also one of the thirstier tanks out there, it kicks out some clouds too!

Not trying to put you off, just making you aware 🙂 – If you like the SMOK Alien mod you coud always pair it with another tank such as the Aspire Cleito / Cleito EXO or the Uwell Valyrian tank.

There are other great brands to keep an eye out for, Eleaf are making some very good quality product, the Invoke kit is very good.

The iJoy Captain mod is very good – available in two versions – the PD270 and the PD1865

I have been using the Voopoo Drag on a daily basis, top quality although the design may not be for everyone.

Finally, Wismec are also one to look out for with the likes of the RX 21700

Apologies if I’ve listed a lot there, not sure what is available in NZ, although you could look to import from the likes of HeavenGifts/Vapesourcing.

I’m sure you’ll likely have more questions so please fire away. The main thing is to know what style of vape you are looking for from your tank. That will narrow things down.

      • Hi Neil,

What Johnny mentioned here is very valuable and thanks to him.

I would like to add a few of my experience as it feels good when a smoker quits smoking and we as a community should help each other.

Contrary to what many reports, reviews, suggestions say on what to use as a beginner, I would say this is no rocket science that you need to graduate in progression. You can start with the most advanced one that fits your needs and is safe and legitimate.

Once you have the vaping hardware, you will learn and master it as time progresses. This saves money and also puts you on the right path to getting most benefit and enjoying vaping, thus helping you to get off cigarettes. What you do need to know before you purchase on the physics behind that helps you to avoid safety hazards and what terminology/technology vaping entails. This is end of the philosophical yet pragmatic view.

** Moving on to your case – Technical and Commercial Analysis
How much do you know about vaping in terms of physics? If you already know, great.

If limited awareness on this: simply put a liquid is vaporised using a heating coil and with air intake creates the vapour that you inhale with nicotine dissolved in it entering your bloodstream.

Vaping differs from smoking as there is no combustion, which results in larger particle size distribution for nicotine to enter the blood stream. Hence, the terms Mouth to Lung inhalation is used to get the max absorption rate, since if you inhale into your mouth and then try to take into your lungs, there is a lot of diffusion of nicotine, which kind of reduces the throat hit that you normally experience when you smoke.

Not that you cannot do mouth to lung – you need to find your sweet spot and there are other tricks like reducing air intake quantity etc. that you will figure out as you get to vape more and more. Perhaps you have already experienced this with your first vaping kit.

Then there is the aspect of safety regarding current, resistance, power. Most of the accidents of fire with vaping devices happen due to batteries not being able to handle the heat produced due to a surge in current passing through them.

There is build of gases inside the battery and they explode due to over pressure and catch fire as there is flammable chemical inside it. Thus, it is safer to use vaping mods (firing device where the battery is located) that are regulated, i.e. have a chip that protects current surges, just like your laptop battery. You need to understand the relation between current, voltage and power using Ohm’s law. Power (P) = Voltage (V) x Current (I) and V = I x Resistance (R). For a fixed power, if resistance increases, current drops which means that for a very low resistance vaping coil, current is high.

In regulated devices, when you set your power to say 50W and you put in a coil of say x ohms, the device will adjust the voltage such that no more than a particular maximum current flows through and you can check that. It depends on number of batteries connected in series or parallel. When you use unregulated device, it does not control the voltage but delivers maximum voltage based on the type, number and charge of the batteries inside.

So you have only 1 parameter to adjust and that is the resistance of the coil. If you use a very low resistance coil and the device used max voltage, there is a high potential for a very large current to pass through that the battery cannot handle and it can be a safety hazard. Additionally, there also have been cases when the atomiser (the part with the eliquid and coil that sits on top of the mod) has a bad connection with the mod resulting in short circuit leading a large draw of current.

Hence, here experience is required to know which atomiser is compatible with the unregulated mod. My personal take here, regulated mods are safer inherently, of course you have to take care which batteries you use as these are high voltage batteries usually (more than 4 V) – use only recognised makes e.g. Sony, Samsung, Panasonic etc. and check for their specs should be for high current rating say 20A or higher for continuous draw and peak draw needs to be higher. 20A is usually good enough since most regulated mods have protection up to 20A.

With the above in mind the next step is to think and decide what type of mod. Criteria for choice here: replaceable battery? No. of battery? Type of battery? A good compromise of all of these for me practically is replaceable 18650 type batteries and minimum 2 and maximum 3.

With 2, the device is nice and compact to fit in my shirt pockets and not too thick. 3 gives more battery time. With 2 and vaping almost entire day (except sleep) lasts me almost 2 days on a single full charge – I use Sony VTC6 batteries or LG. Next criterion is which company mod to take. For 2x 18650 mod, there are many choices – look at the form factor of these mods. Some are wedge shapes, triangual that are thicker to hold and some cyclindrical/tubular/rectangular that are thinner or flatter and both these types are of the same height almost that is determined by the battery height as they all have 18650 type.

There are also other battery types but they are heavier, 18650 are most used in vaping and they are the same that go into your laptop battery (3 cell or 6 cell etc., where are connected in series and parallel arrangement to created one big long laptop battery sealed).

My top budget choices for mods with above criteria that I have bought:
        Smok Alien 220W (2 battery)
        Wismec Reauleaux (2, 3 and 2/3 batteries)
        Wismec Predator (2 battery)
        Vaporessor Revenger (2 battery)
        Pioneer IPV8

I will pick Vaporesso Revenger or IPV8. All of them do a good job, have a slightly different screen but what matters most is when you fire, it should do a good job. What is good? A quick vapor with every setting you have and less loss of current, better battery management and quicker menu adjustment and most importantly a reliable screen. Smok Alien – I loved it however, the screen gets damaged quite soon.

You can find on internet so many users had problem with the screen for Smok and most of the solutions work only for a short time and eventually you go blind. I still use it as I know all the settings by heart and rest is my feeling of how the vapor feels but I cannot see excactly what power I am on and how much amps are going through or even what battery juice is left. It is like driving with eyes closed in the neighbourhood where you have been all the year, so you know the roads and the length out of your head :).

Where to buy: You can find local dealers and if you want to import, USA is the best or try Gearbest.com or fasttech.com (I have used all of them several times and all of them are excellent). Gearbest and Fasstech are China based but pretty cheap offers and excellent service. Gearbest has nearly 24 hour live chat support – check the prices out.

Why go for an advanced MOD as above even as a beginner? Because you will get straightaway the pleasure and satisfaction that will help you quit smoking. I started with a simpler kit but within 2 weeks switched to an advanced one and quit smoking. Simpler devices (tubular pen like etc. or simple all-in-one built-in battery compact ones) do not give a lot of power that limits the amount of vapour and the fullness of taste that is required to forget the taste of cigarettes. The word ‘beginner’ should not be taken that seriously except for the safety aspect that I have written above. The vaping experience itself will grow gradually, just start with an advanced but safe device. Experiement with how you inhale and how you press the fire button and how much air inlet do you want.

FINAL VERDICT: Invest in a good Regulated MOD (do not go for simple tubular or all-in-one kits thinking you’re beginner – you will waste money and not get the satisfaction). If you need any info you can contact me through Twitter: @dreamyskull

        • wow. That is a lot of pertinent info and is of great help. I recently started vaping and was wondering if I should upgrade to a 100 watt regulated or go upto 200 watts. Most views are that 60 or so would suffice for my needs as I am a MTL person, and I don’t need to be fogging machine.
Your take is similar to what I was thinking. Go for a 200 watts device as maybe I may need more power in future, so why not have a device that can handle that. Meanwhile just use it on a lower wattage. So, my dilemma begins with what kind of a tank to pair it with? What kind of coils are best for flavors? Whivh of these mouth to lung tanks are the easiest to use and maintain in terms of simple filling procedure and less chances of leaks etc. Which of these tanks offer dual modes like pre made coils to begin with and have providion for adapters that can swap out pre made coils and are rebuildable.
Getting the answers for these is really difficult as most vape experts are either promoting brands or reviewing products in general. No one is interested in helping out newbie vapers and imparting relevant and pertinent info. And then I chanced upon this page and honestly it felt good to see people genuinely putting in time and effort to lend a hand to people like them who come from a smoking background and trying to quit.
Hope I will find some answers before I give up and give in to the temptation of lighting one up, as compared to the science and tech and the whole maze of the vaping scenario it seems like an easy way out to get my fix.
You guys are awesome though and a heartfelt big thank you to Jonny and Sunny for sharing their knowledge and being such help and providing some direction to me.

          • Hey Shades,

            Thanks for the comment.

What setup are you currently using?

In short, yes you are right, you don’t *need* a high wattage device.

A few things to keep in mind when choosing a mod.

If you are a (Mouth to Lung) MTL vaper keep in mind that you will likely only vape at lower wattage, especially if you are using standard tank that use stock coils.

I vape MTL on a few different tanks from 18W-24W dependent on what tank I am using. For example I would use the Jacvapour S22 or Aspire Naulitus 2 tank at no more than 17-19W.

For wattage around 20-25W I use a tank that you can build your own coils/buy pre-made coils and add cotton, the Digiflavor Siren 2. I do sometimes vape this around 28W depending on the coils and eliquid I use at the time.

I use mods anywhere from 60W-220W for these.

This of course is only a guideline and personal preference.

So pretty much any recent vape mod will have you covered powerwise for MTL. There are really two main reasons an MTL vaper may look to go for a higher wattage device.

The first (as you mention) is that down the line you may decide you want to try sub ohm vaping. But and this is important! It’s very unlikely you will vape over 100W on a regular basis. You can get an excellent sub ohm vape from 40-80W which is a sweet spot for many sub ohm vapers. I don’t personally know anyone that vapes at 150-200W so while it’s perfectly fine to have ‘that extra wattage cushion’ don’t get too hung up on thinking the higher the wattage the device the better it is, a lot of it is overkill.

If you could see yourself vaping at 60W for any reason in the future though it’s best to buy a mod that offers more than 60W as it’s max output.

The second reason is that the battery capacity tends to increase with the wattage to a certain extent. This is of course a positive and could really extend your uninterrupted vaping time, especially if vaping MTL tanks.

Hope that makes sense. Let us know what you are using now and we can recommend some tanks to look at no prob.

            Cheers

            Jonny

  35. Hey Johnny!

Awesome thread. I’ve been vaping for a couple years now but not a “serious” vaper like some… I’ve had a couple vapes but honestly could not name them. I have an Aspire mini Pegasus now but I need a new one since it’s giving me problems. You seem like you know what you’re doing so I was gonna ask you if you could recommend a vape that is smaller like one that fits in your pocket well but still packs a punch and delivers a good kick. I’m not a cloud chaser or even want that much cloud. I just need that nic buzz every so often and would like to whip out my vape when I need it. Any suggestions? I’m thinking a cap of $75 and smaller would be great but not necessary. Thanks!

  36. I was wondering if you could tell me the best option out of:
    1. Voopoo Drag 157
    2. Wismec predator 228
    3. Vaporesso revenger 220

Also could you let me know what are the best but economiccal atomizers for the voopoo drag.
    Thanks.

    • All good choices Abid… For me personally I really enjoy the Voopoo Drag with the Resin finish. I prefer the design and performance has been excellent.

So, you won’t go too far wrong here with buying the mod you think looks the best 🙂

As for economical tanks.. If you mean on e-liquid use then you may struggle 🙂

Stay away from any of the SMOK TFV range of tanks, they guzzle juice.

I personally use three tank setups regularly. The Aspire Cleito, the Wotofo Serpent SMM RTA and the Uwell Crown 3.

Any other question let me know.

      Cheers

  37. Hi Jonny,
I have the Innokin Cool Fire 4. Will the Aspire Cleito tank fit this unit or should I just stick with the stock tank? Thanks

    • Hey Kevin,

Yes and no… it fits on the CoolFire 4 no problem. But, not all coils will be good. Only the 0.4Ohm coils will work well. The standard 0.4Ohm Cleito coils are rated for use between 40-60W and as you know the Coolfire is only capable of a max 40W output.

I personally vape around 28-35W with the 0.4Ohm Cleito coil. May too cool a vape or feel underpowered for some but works for my personal tastes.

Hope that doesn’t confuse matters more!

      Cheers

      Jonny

      • Thanks for your help Jonny. I will give the Cleito coil a go as I normally vape at 35w as well.

Just one last question please. Which mod(s) would you recommend for 80vg/20pg or 70vg/30pg that gives the best flavour (with cool DTL hits) and loads of fog. I have been a smoker for many years and have been vaping for about a year now off-and-on, but I have yet to find a mod and juice combo that will allow a nice DTL experience. I know that there are a lot of variables involved, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

        • Hey Kevin,

The Cleito will handle 80/20 and 70/30 well. The 80VG will offer a touch more in the cloud department but it’s really about experimenting with juices.

It’s more the tank that will give you the flavour/cloud vaping experience but if you are vaping at around 35W it could be beneficial to have a device that can give you more than 40W for flexibility when sub ohm vaping. You never know when you may need that bit of extra power. You will also likely be able to increase your battery life.

For mods with integrated batteries the Innokin Cool Fire ultra is one that has served me well and I use daily. You will also be familiar with the form factor (although chunkier) and menu controls.

          Cheers

  38. Hi Karen,

Not heard of the Triton Mod before, do you have a link so I can check it out and better understand what you have?

2ml tanks are, unfortunately, now the largest capacity legally available due to the government regulations set in place last May 🙁

    Cheers

    Jonny

  39. Oh sorry, I didn’t get my question by professionally because am still beginner with a good jomotech ultra 60 TC , actually I like the built-in battery , but around the suggestions I don’t have any idea only after I’ll use ! 😋 That’s all ,
